Filed May 14, 1943 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor 1 [brews eZZezy 5 Patented May 3%, 1944 UNITED STATE-Si an st PATENT (li i' 'iC 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and like tools, the principal object of the invention being to provide a wrench or key whereby the usual clamping screw of hose clamps and the like can be readily reached at near inaccessible places.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a wrench or operating key for wing headed screws whereby said screws can be actuated in crowded or near inaccessible places, with but a small efiort on the part of the workmen.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevational view showing the wrench being used in one position.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the wrench being used in a diiierent position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the wrench being used in a third position.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the wrench.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 6--6 of Figure 5.
Figure '7 is an end elevational View of the wrench.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that this device isespecially adapted for use in conjunction with tube and hose connections on aircraft, automobiles, trucks, and other commercial and military mobile units. Numeral 5 denotes a pipe or tube, while numeral 6 denotes a hose end which is to be clamped to the pipe 5. A clamp generally referred to by numeral 7 and of conventional design consists of a band 8, a pressure body or block 9 and a screw ill, this screw being of the type having a wing or flat head ll.
The present invention, which is a wrench for actuating the screw it] is generally referred to by numeral l2 and consists of a T-shaped structure as is clearly represented in Figure 1. This T-shaped structure consists of a leg i3 having a crossed head i i. A channel iii extends longitudinally of the leg i3 and merges with a channel it extending from end to end of the head H5. The lower end of the shank l3, that is, the free end is bifurcated as at ll, so as to form furcations iii capable of straddling the head ii of a screw it when the wrench is to be used in the position shown in Figure 2.
The channel I5 is to be used when the wrench has to assume the position shown in Figure 3, while the cross channel it comes into play when the wrench must be used in the position shown in Figure 4.
Obviously, the wrench can be stamped from a single sheet of metal or otherwise constructed, to arrive at the T-formation and the channels and bifurcation above specified.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A wrench of the character described comprising a shank straight throughout its length and a cross head at one end of said shank projecting from opposite sides thereof and straight throughout its length, the cross head being U-shaped in cross section to provide a straight and unobstructed channel extending the full length of the cross head and having inner and outer side walls, the shank being also U-shaped in cross section to provide a straight and unobstructed channel having side walls and communicating with the channel of the cross head through the inner side wall thereof, and said shank being slotted from its outer end along the bottom of its channel to form fiat jaws of free end portions of its walls.
