PLIERS Filed March 16', 1945 Patented Oct. 3, 1944 UNITED "STATES PATEN T PF ICE 'PLIERS Taylor L. McPherson, Lancaster; Calif.
' =-Application March-1.6, 1943; Serial No.479g363 V '3 Claims.
This-invention-relat'es to pliers, andit is pri- -marily an object of the invention to provide a tool of this kindwhich can be usedto particular advantage in out-of-the-way, places or in 'extremely-difiicult positions as. is often encountered in working on airplanes 'and *the modern automobile.-
It--isg also an objector-the invention to providepliers of along=nosed type and wherein the jaws are angularly disposed with respect to their axes of turning movement.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pliers whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of pliers constructedin accordance with an embodiment of my invention, with a portion broken away.
Figure 2 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of the pliers as illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view of the inner extremity of one of the handles, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 5.
In the embodiment of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, I denotes an elongated shank cylindrical in cross section throughout the major portion of its length and which has integrally formed with one end portion thereof the laterally disposed elongated straight nose or jaw 2. This nose or jaw 2 is disposed forwardly on a predetermined angle and preferably substantially 45 degrees.
The rear extremity of the shank I has a part 3 angular in cross-section and slightly tapered outwardly for tight fit within a socket 4 provided in the inner face 5 of a handle member 6. This face 5 is flat for close contact with the adjacent end face I of a sleeve 8 surrounding the major portion of the shank I. These faces 5 and I are perpendicular to the shank I and the sleeve 8. The face 5 at the inner end of the handle member 6 is .provided with an outwardly disposed flange 9 arcuate from one end to the other and which extends within an arcuate socket I0 provided in the face I of the sleeve 8.
The flange 9 and the socket II] are concentric of theleng'th or the'fiange 9. The outer or forward endportion of the sleeve 8 hasrigidly'secured thereto a second straight nose or jaw II complemental to and coacting with the nose or jaw 2.
The rear portion of the sleeve 8 is provided with a handle member I2. This handle member I2 as well as the handle member 6 are so formed as to be readily and conveniently grasped by the hand of the user and, as is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, said handle members 6 and I2 are disposed upwardly and rearwardly on a predetermined angle or curvature in a direction substantially opposite to the straight noses or jaws 2 and II.
The flat face 5, hereinbefore referred to, is provided, in fact, upon a head I4 at the inner or forward end of the handle member 6 and is to the side of said head I 4 remote from the nose or jaw 2, whereas the handle I2 is at the side of the sleeve remote from the nose or jaw II.
While the handle 6 may be rigidly held to the shank I in any manner preferred, in the present embodiment of the invention and as 11- lustrated in Figure 2, the outer end of the portion 4 is provided with an extended rivet pin I5 extending through the rear portion of and beyond the head l4 with its outer extremity up set, as at I6, in a well known manner.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a ,pliers constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
In the use of the pliers it will be readily apparent that when the handles 6 and I2 are forced apart to the maximum extent permitted by the inter-leaved coupling comprising the arcuate flange 9 and the socket I 0, the points of the jaws 2 and II will be separated as illustrated in Figure 1. This will permit the grasping of any object located in a position which might not be accessible to pliers of the usual design and when such object is located between the separated ends of the jaws the jaws may be readily forced together into gripping relation by pressing the handles together to rock the shank l in the sleeve 8. The handle l2 and sleeve 8 together with the jaw II which is integral with the sleeve might be considered as remaining stationary while the other handle, the shank I and jaw 2 which is coupled with the shank, oscillate on the longitudinal axis of the inter-connected shank and sleeve.
What is claimed is: V
1, Pliers comprising an elongated shank, a sleeve freely surrounding said shank, laterally disposed long jaws carried by the outer extremities of the shank and sleeve, a rearwardly disposed handle member carried by the rear portion of the sleeve, and a rearwardly directed handle member secured to the rear portion of the shank, said handle members providing means for relatively rotating the sleeve and shank about a common axis, the rear-'porti0n" of the sleeve being provided with an arcuate socket, the inner end of the handle of the shank being'provided with an ancuate flange extending within the arcuate socket, said socket being ofa length greater than the length of the flange. '2. Pliers comprising a relatively long shank of circular cross section, asleeve having the shank extending therethrough 'for turning therein, a pair of jaws carried by the sleeve and shank at one end and extending obliquely of the sleeve and shank, a handle member carried by the other end of the sleeve, a handle member carried by the other end of the shank, the handle members extending in divergent relation and substantially obliquely of the sleeve and shank in the opposite direction to the jaws, and an interleaving coupling between the adjacent portions of the handle members limiting the relative turning of such members on the axes of the shank and sleeve. 7
3. Pliers comprising a relatively long shank of circular cross section, a sleeve having the shank extending therethrough for turning therein, jaws carried by the outer extremities of the shank and sleeve and extending obliquely to the same, a handle member integral with the other extremity of the sleeve, a handle member attached to the other extremity of the shank, the handle'members extending substantially obliquely to the shank and sleeve in the opposite direction from the jaws, the handle members at their adjacent ends having opposing faces lying in'a plane perpendicular to the shankand sleeve, one of said faces having an arcuate slot therein concentric with the shank and sleeve,-and a member carried by the other face and slidably engaging in the arcuate slot, the slot and the member engaged therein functioning to limit the relative oscillatory movement of the handles.
