UNITED STATES PATENT Tries.
JAMES T. KENNEDY, OF PETERSBUR-G, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO L. V. FOGLEMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,915, dated November 30, 1880. 7 Application filed October 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES T. KENNEDY, of Petersburg, in the county of Lincoln and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, [0 reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective front view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, of the rear and under side of the plow. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the share and moldboard. Fig. 5 is a view of the frame, the share and mold-board having been detached; and Fig. 6 is a view of one of the shares.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to plows; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the beam, and B the standard. Suit- 3o ably secured to the latter is a frame, G, composed of the bars 0, G, and 0 the two latter being secured to the standard B, to the outer edge of which is bolted one of the handles, D, the other handle, E, being secured to the land- 3 5 side F, which is also bolted to the standard, as shown. An S-brace, G, connects the lower ends of the handles, the upper ends of which are connected in the usualmanner by rounds H.
In the construction of this plow two mold- 0 boards, or sections of mold-boards, are employed, one of which is adjustable, so as to enable the size of the plow to be altered at will to any desired number. The solid or permanent mold-board I is provided with a flange, 5 J, by which it is bolted to the side of the standard in such a position as to cover the frame 0. The movable mold-board K is adjusted between frame 0 and mold-board I, and is provided with two bolts, L L, sliding in frame 0, and holding a cross-piece, M,
which may be tightened up against frame 0, and thereby secure the mold-board K in any desired position. The shape of the moldboards is, of course, such that they will fit closely together in any position, and the edge of the upper one is sloped down thin toward the lower one.
From this description it will be seen that the lower mold-board may be easily adjusted, so as to present a surface of any desired size. Accompanying each plow is therefore a full set of diflerently-sized shares, each of the shape represented in Fig. 6, and capable of being secured upon the point of the plow. To this end the frame 0 is provided with a lip, N, hav- 6 5 ing a perforation adapted to receive a bolt passing through a perforation in the upper side of the share. The edge of the share is provided with a similar perforation, enabling it to be bolted to the point of the standard. It will be readily seen from the foregoing description and by reference to the drawings hereto annexed that by changing the share and adjusting the lower mold-board my improved plow may be readily adjusted to any desired size.
I am aware that an adjustable mold-board is not broadly new, as one constructed in three parts is shown in the patent to Gibbs, No. 107,037, of September 6,1870, and I therefore make no broad claim to the same.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a plow, the standard B,provided with the frame 0 G 0 having lip N, and the stationary upper mold-board, I, in combination with the lower adjustable mold-board, K, having the cross-piece M secured to its under side by the screw-bolts L L, constructed and oper- 9o ating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES T. KENNEDY. Witnesses:
J. G. CUMMINGS, J. B. LUNA.
