SHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,195, dated June 1, 188i).

To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE O. HENNING, of Washin gton city, District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement, while applicable to shirts in general, has been designed with particular reference to a shirt-such as one which opens at the back-in which the fasteningstud is apt to come in contact with or rub against the neck of the wearer.

My object is to prevent the stud from coming in contact with the person of the wearer; and to this end my improvement consists in combining, with that portion of the shirt in which the button-hole is formed for the stud, a fly attached to the inside of said portion in such position as to be inteposed between the stud (when the latter is in place) and the person of the wearer, said fly being at the same time attached so that the stud may be inserted into its button-hole from the inner face of the garment.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of the upper portion of a shirt which buttons at the back, showing the inner face of the rear portion of the neck-band. Fig. 2 is a view of the outer face of that flap or end of the neck-band to which the fly is attached. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same through the button-holes.

The inner flap or end of the neck-band, provided with button-holes d, in which the fastening-studs are usually inserted, is lettered a. This end or flap lies next to the person of the wearer, and usually, when the shirt is worn, the studs I), Fig. 3, come in contact with the neck, and are very apt to rub against and irritate it. To prevent this annoyace I apply to the inner face of the end or flap a a fly, c, which stud into its button-hole from the rear face of the neck-band.

It is manifest that this improvement is equally applicable to shirts which button in front, and can be applied to any button-hole in the shirt where a stud is used for fastening purposes, the protecting-fly being applied to the inner face of that portion of the shirt which would otherwise come directly against the person of the wearer.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In a shirt, a fly attached to the inner face of the neck-band or other part of the shirt which is provided with a stud-receiving button-hole in position to cover said button-hole and keep the inner head of the stud from contact with the person of the wearer, as hereinbefore set forth.

2. The protecting-fly attached to the inner face of the neck-band or other portion of the shirt in which a stud-receiving button-hole is formed in position to cover said button-hole,

one of the edges of said fly being unattached to the shirt to permit access to be had to the button-hole from the rear, as hereinbefore set forth.
