NITED STATES PATENT SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,698, dated December 27,1898.
Application filed February 24,1898. Serial No. 671,422. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND DEUTSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing atthe city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shirts and analogous garments, and has for its objects more particularly to provide a shirt having a band the inner surface of which will present a smooth unbroken surface to the body of the wearer and which band will be capable of receiving and holding a stud or other fastening device therein in such a way that the same cannot come into contact with the body of the wearer. These objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the upper portion of a shirt made in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof, showing a stud in position in the band and the holding means therefor slightly distended; and Fig. 3 is a rear perspective View of the upper portion of a shirt.
In said drawings, A designates an openfront shirt of the ordinary form or style.
B denotes the band, comprising the band or strip of fabric 0, which is secured to the body of the shirt A by a row of stitching a, and the independent band or strip of fabric D, corresponding in outline substantially with said band or strip B and secured to the outer side thereof for the greater portion of its length by longitudinal rows of stitching b and near its middle by transverse parallel rows of stitching c, thus forming in said band or strip D the secured portions Dcontiguous to the ends of the band B and the unsecured portion or loop-section E intermediate its ends. At the overlapping edges of the garment the ends of the band B are provided with buttonholes d, which extend through both the bands or strips G and D, and near the middle of said band B the band or strip D is provided at its unsecured portion or loopsection E with a buttonhole e, which extends through said band or strip D only, said buttonholes cl and 6 being adapted to receive the studs or buttons whereby to hold the edges of the garment together and the collar secured to the band B thereof.
It is obvious that my invention while more particularly adapted to shirts of the openfront form is also applicable to shirts which open at the back only. It is also to be observed that in view of the fact that the stud or button holding means at the back of the shirt is entirely outside of the band proper the stud cannot come into contact with the neck or body of the wearera feature of importance where studs or buttons having metallic bases are worn.
It will be perceived that the intermediate I loop portion E of the neckband by having both its upper and its lower edge free and unsecured readily perm its the insertion of the fingers from above or below without any obstruction whatever for the purpose of adjusting a collar-button and also prevents clogging or the accumulation of an excess of starch while undergoing the starchin g process.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a shirt A, having a neckband consisting of an inner protecting-strip of fabricO, secured along its bottom edge to the shirt, and an outer strip of fabric D, secured along its bottom edge to the inner strip except at the center of the back which is disconnected from both the inner strip 0 and the shirt at both its top and bottom edges, and constitutes a loop E, the ends of which are secured to the inner strip 0 by transverse rows of stitching c 0, while the center of the loop is formed with a buttonhole to receive a collar-button the base of which is adapted to bear against the outer side of the inner strip 0, which latter serves to retain the button in place and protect the neck of the wearer from contact with the button.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 16th day of February, 1898.
SIGMUND DEUTSCH.
