HENRY HIGKMAN, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
COLLAR-BUTTON AND NECK-TIE FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,071, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HICKMAN, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Collar-Button and Neck-Tie Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a collar-button that will hold the neck-tie and prevent the same from slipping, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists of a collar-button provided with one or more points at the end of the shank, which pass into the necktie and hold it in place.
It furtherconsists in providing the shank with an adjustable screwhead, which can be set to cover the points so that they do not catch in the clothing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the button having the screwhead removed. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the screw-head. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the button with the head screwed down. showing the points. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the button with the head drawn out so as to cover the points. Fig. 5is aside view of the button.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The button consists of the base A, to which the shank D, provided with the head E, Fig. 5. is attached. The end of the shank is provided with one or more points, 0, extending in a direction parallel to the shank. As these points are liable to tear the clothingwhen the button is passed through the button-hole,- the button maybe composed of the base A, to which the threaded shank B is attached in the ordinary manner, and ot' the perforated head E, at-
' taohed to the sleeve D, provided with a screwthread on its inner side. The threads of the shank B and of the sleeve D correspond and take on each other, so that by turning the head E it can be moved toward or from the base A. One or more metal points, 0 O, are attached to the upper end of the shank in a position parallel to the axis of the shank, and extend through or into the circular opening in the head.
The button may be made of metal, rubber, bone, or any other suitable material.
The button is used in thefollowing manner: Before passing the button through the buttonhole the head E is drawn out so as to extend beyond the points (J O, as is shown in Fig. 4, in order to prevent the points from catching in the clothing. As soon as the head has passed through the collar K it is screwed down until it is in the position shown in Fig. 3. The points 0 are then exposed, and necktie N can be attached to them by pressing it against them so that they pass into it. They will thus hold the neck-tie in place, prevent all slipping or displacement of the same, and also afford great convenience in tying the neck-tie, for one end can be held by the points while the other is passed around the neck.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a collar-button, the head E, provided with internally-threaded sleeve, in combination with a disk or base, A, having a threaded spurred shank, said sleeve being adapted to conceal or expose the spurs, as described.
2. The combination, withthe threaded shank B, attached to the base A, of the points 0 O, and of the head E, attached to the threaded sleeve D, as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY HIOKMAN.
