SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.3'73,250, dated November 15, 1887. Application filed April 4, 1887. Serial No. 233,593 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SIMON B. SIMON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in buttons and studs, and has for its, object to provide a separable button or stud which may be readily attached to and detached from an article of dress, and wherein the said button or stud when attached will be securely and rigidly held in position until removed by hand.

The invention consists in the construction and combination-of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a partial central longitudinal section through a button, illustrating the body detached from the shank. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the shank and aside elevation of the key used in attaching the same. Fig. 3 is a partial central longitudinal section through a modified form of button. Fig. gt is a bottom plan of the shank and side elevation of the key used in attaching said shank to the 'cap. Fig. 5 is a detached view of another form of button, the body and shank being in elevation and the cap in section; and Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of the cap.

In carrying out the invention the button is made in two parts-the body A and cap B,the shank 0 being made integral with either, as found desirable.

The body A of the'button illustrated in Fig. l is provided with an integral neck, a, contrally the under side, and a threaded aperture, at, extending through said neck and body.

The shank O is exteriorly threaded and made integral with the cap B, said cap being of smaller diameter than the body. In the center of the cap a rectangular recess, b, is provided, adapted to receive the square stem of the keyD.

In inserting the button a suitable aperture is made in the cloth, which aperture is preferably stitched similarly to a button-hole. The

shank is then passed through the opening in the cloth until the cap is brought in contact with the underside. Thebody is then screwed upon the shank and the cap and body firmly united by entering the key in the former and turning the same while the latter is held in a fixed position.

The button illustrated in Fig. 3 is substantiallythe same as that shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that the neck a is reduced or dispensed with, and the cap B is provided with two spaced apertures or recesses, 11, at each 'side of the'center, adapted to receive the key D, which is constructed in this instance with a bifurcated shank, as shown in Fig. 4.

In the form of button illustrated in Fig. 5 the shank G is made integral with the'body A, and the cap is provided with a central threaded aperture, d, adapted to be screwed, to said shafik. The same apertures or recesses b are provided in the cap, and the same form of key employed to fasten the button, as shown in Fig. 4.

The body and cap maybe made of any suitable material-such as horn, metal,or rubberand may be covered with cloth, silk, or rubber, in which event the key may be dispensed with.

Buttons constructed in this manner are not only held securely in place, but can be removedquickly and others substituted, when desirable. An effective collar and cuff button is advantageously made in the same manner at little cost.

I am aware that a patenti'or a separable button has been granted to S. E. Mallett, dated April 25, 1876, in which the lower cap is provided with aligning peripheral recesses adapted to receive the prongs of a key for the purpose of uniting the two sections of the button, and I do not claim such construction, but seek to produce an improved and simpler form in which the cap is provided with a single rectangular aperture only, and the key with a single shank adapted to enter said recess, and an exteriorly-serrated head for convenience of manipulation.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
