GEORGE LEE, OF BlNGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,831, dated March 28, 1899. Application filed July 30, 1898. Serial No. 687,261. (No model.)
To coZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE NV. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Separable Buttons and Studs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in separable buttons or studs of that class in which provision is made for clamping the material to which the button or stud is attached firmly between the base and shank of the said button or stud.
The objects of myiuvention are to provide a button or stud comprising two separable members in which the base member is provided with means for retaining it against rotary movement when the shank-section is screwed thereon and in which the head member is provided with means for preventing the unintentional unscrewing thereof without the use of separate parts or springs.
A further object is to provide aseparable button or stud in which the clamping-washer is loosely retained at all times upon the shank of the head portion, so as to obviate the danger of losing the said washer when the head and base are separated.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved button or stud in its operative position with a band of suitable material clamped therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the same. Fig. 3 is a'vertical central section through the button or stud, showing the head and base members separated. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section through a modified form of button or stud in which the upwardlyextended portion of the socketpiece is cut off to permit a stud or button being formed with a very small neck or shank. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 represent detail vertical sectional views of the several parts of the button or stud. Fig. 10 is a top plan view of the socket-piece. Fig. 11 is a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 12 is a top plan View of the clamping-washer.
The separable button or stud comprises two separable inembers-viz., ahead A and a base B. The head A has a shank a, within which is located a socket-piece a. This socket-piece in the form shown in Fig. 3 is provided with an upwardly-extended portion a extending upwardly within the neck of the shank a,while in Fig. 4 the socket-piece is shown without the said upwardly-extended portion a so that the shank a of the head may bemade very small. This structure is particularly applicable for use in connection with buttons in which a very small shank is desired, so that the buttonhole will not be distended to a too great degree. By making the head and socketpiece in two parts the head may be stamped or formed from sheet metal and then the socketpiece clamped therein, as shown.
The socket-piece a is held in position by crimping the bottom edge of the shank a of the head around its rim, so that the socketpiece and the -head are substantially integral with each other. The socket-piece a is further provided with a downwardly-extended cylindrical portion a, upon which is loosely retained a dish-shaped clamping-washer a This washer is held against removal from the said socket-piece by spreading the bottom edge of the extension a as shown.
The base 13 comprises a base-plate I), having an upwardly-extended screw-threaded stem Z), adapted to enter the socket-piece a in the head, whereby as the head is screwed home the material is clamped between the said base-plate b and the washer a For preventing the base-plate from turning as the head is screwed home I provide the base-plate with one or more projections b uprising from its upper face in position to enter the material upon which the button or stud is being secured. The base-plate b may be provided with a cap 17 as is usual, which cap is preferably applied by crimping its edges over the rim of the said base-plate b.
For preventing the unintentional unscrewing of the head after the material has been clamped between the base-plate and washer the washer is provided with an annular series of teeth or corrugations a and the socketpiece a is provided with one or more projections a which are adapted to engage the said teeth, which projections are located adjacent to each other, as shown. The teeth extend in a direction to permit the projections a to travel along the same as the head is being screwed home, the spring in the metallic body of the washer being suffieient to permit the washer to yield slightly as the projections travel over the teeth. The teeth stop the unintentional reverse movement ot the projections at, and the head is thereby prevented from unscrewing unintentionally. 3y this means I am enabled to do away entirely with the use of separate springs and other parts for locking the head and at the same time permit the washer a to be loosely retained upon the downward extension a of the socketpiece.
The button or stud as thus constructed may be very quickly clamped to the material in the desired position, and it will retain its position until intentionally removed therefrom.
Vhat I claim is- A separable button or stud comprising a base having a screw-threaded stem uprising therefrom, a head having a downwardly-extended shank, a screw-threaded socket-piece secured Within the shank in position to receive the said stem, a washer loosely retained by the said socket-piece, the said Washer being provided with an annular series of teeth and the said socket-piece being provided with one or more projections in position to engage the teeth and travel over the same as the head is screwed home, substantially as set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of tWo Witnesses, this 29th day of July, 1898.
