SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,802, dated June 28, 1892. I

To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV HEUSER, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, a citizen of Germany, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of buttons, and more especcially to buttons which are covered with suitable fabrics and used for coats, vests, and other garments; and the invention consists of a button, the back-plate of which is provided with a central aperture and a filling that pro- 3ects through said aperture and is firmly retamed by an interior filling-piece of pasteboard or other material, which is pressed on the interior portion of the filling by turning inward the outer edge of the back-plate.
The invention consists, secondly, of the novel construction of the back-plate with its filling, so that the latter is firmly retained in position and is not liable to be removed by strain on the same; and the invention consists, lastly, of a button theface-plate and covering of which are sprung or pressed over the back-plate, having a central aperture, a filling projecting through said aperture and retained by the inwardly-turned inner edge of the back-plate, and an exterior annular depression near the outer edge of the back-plate below the inwardly-bent edge, into which depression the inwardly-bent edge of the face-plate is pressed so as to be firmly connected therewith.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the back-plate of a covered button as made heretofore. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a covered button as made heretofore. Fig. 3 is a side View of the same. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 5' is a vertical transverse sectional view of the button-plate of my improved covered button. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse sectional view of my improved covered button. Fig. 7 is a side view of the same. Fig. 8 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Covered buttons were made heretofore as shown in Figs. 1 to 4. A filling m and fillingpiece m were placed into the centrally-apertured button-plate m and the covered topplate at, having a filling n, was placed on the button-plate and the edges of the top plate pressed over the edges of the bottom plate. The top plate is not held securely on the button and very apt to be torn off when the button is in use.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, A represents the faceplate of my improved button; B, the backplate, which is provided with a central aperture b, and O a filling, which is placed into the ring-shaped back-plate and retained on the same by a suitable filling-piece O, of pasteboard or other suitable material.
The filling 0 projects through the aperture b and forms the fastening-piece D. The upper edge of the back-pla'teis turned inwardly, so as to form a retaining-flange b, by which the filling C and filling-piece C are firmly and reliably held in position without permitting the pulling out of the filling-piece when strain is exerted on the same while the button is in use. Below the circumference of the back-plate is formed an annular depression d, into which the inwardly-bent edge of the faceplate A is pressed, said edge serving to retain the covering aof the face-plate by firmly holding at the same time the partsof the button together. The face-plate is also provided with a filling-piece A and a filling A of pasteboard or other material.
By the construction described my improved button exerts a firm hold on the filling-piece, so that the same cannot be pulled out by use,
.while during the manufacture of the button none of the parts connected with the backplate can be dropped out so as to cause delay and loss of fabric. In addition thereto the cutting of the covering fabric a of the button by the sharp edge of the back-plate heretofore in use cannot take place, so that a more reliable connection of the face-plate with the backeplate and of the covering fabric is produced and a better-finished button is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 p In a button, the combination of a backplate provided with a central aperture, an inturned flange at its outer and upper edge, and an exterior annular groove near its outer edge,
a filling disposed in said back-plate and pro jecting through said central aperture, a lower filling-piece also disposed in said back-plate over said filling and under the flange of said back-plate, an upper filling-piece mounted on said lower filling-piece, and a cloth-covered front plate covering said upper filling-piece and provided with an inturned flange shutting over the upper edge of the back-plate and pressed into said groove, substantially as IO described.
