' OF `NR-vv YORK, N. Y.
'WINDOW-cosmos.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters -Patent .'No. 224,466, datedFebruary 10, 1880.
Application filed October 15, 1879.
To all whom tt mor/y concern: f
Be it known that I, MARTIN MURPHEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and luse ful Improvements in Window-Comicos and I do hereby declare that the followngis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in' the art to which it appertains to make and use the 1o same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
FigureJ l is a frontview.v Fig. 2 is atop view. Fig. 3isa rear view. Fig. 4 is acrosssection.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.`
This invention relates to certain cornicesof that-class which are adjustable or capable of 2o being extended so as to fit Windows of diferent widths and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My improved cornice consists of two pieces of moldings, A A, each of which may be provided at one end with a return-piece, B.
The moldings A are 1"s'o""forn1ed -as to serve two purposesto wit, first, ornamentation; 3o and, second, to present two reverse grooves, C
C, adapted to receive corresponding tongues D D upon the rear side of a thlrd piece of molding, E, which, as will be seen, is so constructed as to fit upon the face of the mold- 3 5 ings A. V
The face of the molding E may be like that of the moldings A, or it may be provided with any suitable ornamentation.
The. central molding, E, serves to connect 4o the side moldings, A A, which maybe slid together or apart to any desired extent,"thus iittin g the cornice to windows of various widths. Suitable ornaments F F, also provided upon theirrear sides with tongues to engage the grooves G, maybe slid upon the moldings A, andadj usted at the ends, orin any desired postion. y
In the cross-section, Fig. 4, I have shown how the grooves O G are provided upon their inner faces With thin narrow strips H H, the 5o object` of which is lto raise the sliding pieces from the face of the stationary piece, causing an intervening space. Y (Denoted by the letter I, Fig. 4.) The polished face of the lowermolding is thereby protected from injury by fric- Vtion whenthecornice is extended or folded.
My improved adjustable cornice is simple in construction, it presents a handsome appearance, and is capable of being extended to nearly the full combined length of its compo- 6o I am aware that adjustable cornices are not new, broadly. Such, therefore, I donot claim 3 but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination, with moldings A A, having their ornamental faces so formed and beaded as to present retaining-grooves G C, 7o of the center molding, E, having tongues on its rear side to engage therewith and form an adjustable cornice, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improvementin adjustablecornices, the moldings A A, having grooves C C, provided upon their inner faces with strips H H, in combination with a central connectingpiece, E,-havin g tongues D D, as set fort-h.
Intestimony that Iv claim the foregoing asy 8o my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN MURPHEY.
Witnesses Y WM. yBAeerER, GEO. F. GRAHAM.
