EXTENSION-CORNICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,838, dated October 5, 1880.

Application filed March 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, MARTIN MURPHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Cornices; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.

This invention relates to that class of corniceswhich are adjustable or capable of being extended so as to iit windows of different widths; and it may be described as being an improvement on Patent No. 224,466, granted to myself' on the 10th day of February, 1880.

In my said Letters Patent the cornice is constructed of extensionpieces provided upon their faces with reverse grooves to receive corresponding tongues upon the rear side of the center or connecting piece. This construction is somewhat objectionable, for the reason that in order to cut the moldings to the required shape it is necessaryT to run the stuff through the molding-machine twice in order to form the reverse grooves. Another difficulty was sometimes experienced in properly fitting the pieces together, which by my present invention is entirely overcome.

Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, AA represent the end or extension pieces, and B the center or connecting piece, of my improved cornice. The center-piece B is provided upon its rear side with grooves G C, facing in the same direction, to receive corresponding tongues D D upon the front side of the extension-pieces A. This form of molding I am able to cut by a single run through the machine, thereby effecting a great saving in the cost of production.

thel cornices in this manner is the saving in time in putting them together, it having been sometimes found difficult to fit the parts together when constructed as shown in my Patent No. 224,466.

By my present improvement the extensionpieces may be simply hung or hooked upon the center-piece, and afterward provided at their lower inner corners with small plates E, which extend under the lower edge ofthe center piece, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and, while permitting the parts to be freely slid in extending or shortening the cornice, prevent the extension-pieces from dropping oft' the center-piece.

To prevent the end pieces from being accidentally drawn off the center-piece in extending the cornice, the said center-piece may be provided with a longitudinal groove, F, extending nearly to the ends thereof. The extension-pieces are provided with dowels G, which work in the said groove and prevent them from being dropped off or removed from the center-piece.

In my patent above alluded to the grooves are described as being provided upon their inner faces with strips, the object of which is to prevent friction between the sliding pieces and the injury to the polishing or ornamentation resulting therefrom. In my present improvement I have discarded the said strips, but use a substitute therefor in the shape of shoulders H, formed upon the extension-pieces A A, facing the hooks. The said shoulders serve the same purpose of keeping the sliding pieces slightly apart, and have the advantage of being formed in a piece with the moldings.

This invention is more simple and durable and far less expensive than any of the class that have come to my notice.

Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of th United Statesl. As an improvement in extension-cornices, the combination, with a centerpiece provided upon its rear side with grooves facing in the same direction, of extension-pieces provided upon their faces with tongues adapted to catch and slide in said grooves, as set forth.
