NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HUNZINGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPLYING STRAW BRAlD TO FURNITURE AND CABINET-WARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,847, dated March 13, 1883. Application filed December 14, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNZINGER, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Furniture and Gabinet-Ware, of which the following is a specifition.
Wooden desks and work-boxes have had their surfaces covered with split straw glued on, and the same have been in the form of diamonds, squares, and other ornamental shapes, and both colored and plain. This straw surface is expensive to apply, and it is liable to be injured in use Myimprovementrelates to asurface of straw braid received between ribs, or into a recess or recesses in the surface of the chair, sofa, table, box, desk, or other cabinet-ware article, the straw braid giving to the said article a handsome appearance, and being protected by the ribs, between which the braid is received, or the edges of the recess. Such braid is rendered very durable, and it can be renewed from time to time. This surface of straw braid has a very pleasing efi'ect, especially in consequence of the rough-plaited form of such braid. The straw may be preserved from discoloration by varnish, and it is a cheap material, that is well adapted to cover screws, holes, or other things that would mar the surface of the article.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a chair with this braid applied to the surface, and Fig. 2 is a section showing the grooves for the braid.
I do not limit myself to the article of furniture orcabinet-ware to which thisimprovement is applied. Thereforeadescription of the chair shown is not needed.
The surface that is to be ornamented or finished with the straw braid is to be recessed of a width to correspond with one, two, or more widths of the braid a, and thedepth ot' the recess should be rather more than the thickness of the braid, and at the edges of the recess there may be ribs orornamental moldings b b, of any desired size or shape. The braid a is to be woven, plaited. or braided in any desired ornamental form, and it may be wide or narrow, and it is to be laid in place and glued, and, being in a recess, the ends are protected and only require to be cut off.
I claim as my invention In combination with the recessed surface of furniture or cabinet-ware, the straw braid secured within such recess, substantiallyas set forth.
2. The combination, with the straw braid secured to the surface of furniture or cabinetware, of the protecting ribs or moldings at the edges of such braid, as specified.
Signed by me this 11th day of December, A. D. 1882.
GEO. HUNZINGER.
