This invention relates to infants undergarments andnhas particular reference to a combination diaper and ychest protector in which the diaper is so constructed and arranged as to comy i fortably and snugly fit about the waist and legs of the infant so as to cover and enclose the lower part of the torso, the front and rear portions adjacent the crotchv to prevent chailng or rubbing. j

The invention further comprehends a diaper in which the rear portion adjacent the top thereof extends forwardly'atvthe sides thereof into overlapped relationship with the front portion yof thediaper to seal the junctures therewith and with l5 fastening means for connecting the overlapped portions tog as to render the rear of the garment smooth and tree from anything which wculdbe uncomfortable to the infant.

In order to fasten the diaper in position and to retain the recessed edges I3 of the medial portion I2 inintimate surrounding relationship with the 40 legs of the infant, pairs oftie strings I-I and i8 are secured to the opposite longitudinal edges of the diaper at the juncture of the medial portion I2 with the opposite end portions itl and l I. The opposite end portions'lt and II are respectively 425 provided with' pairs of tie strings I9 and 20 `for tightening the diaper about the waist, of the infant and for securing 'the ared side edges of the rearcovering portion in overlapped relationv ship with the front covering portion I0.

The tie strings I9 are secured to the opposite side edges of the rear covering portion II at its point of greatest width, while the tie strings 2li consist of a length of tape arranged with its medial portion disposed and secured by stitching 55 2i in a transversely extending tunnel 22 formed in the front covering portion i0 and with its opposite tying ends protruding through the open ends thereof located intermediate the side edges l5 so that the front portion of the diaper may be ruffled to take up any slack to thereby avoid uncomfortable rufiling of the diaper in the back.

The rear body covering portion Il is provided with inwardly con-verging side edge portions 23 which extend from the upper ends of the recessed edges i6 to the upper end edge 24, which end edge is parallel to the end edge I4 of the front covering section I0.

The diaper is composed of two

plies

25 and 26 of soft fabric material which plies are inturned at their opposite longitudinal side edges and along the upper edge of the rear covering portion and secured together between the plies by stitching 21, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4. v The inner ply 25 at one end thereof is folded over upon itself and joined to the end of the outer ply 26 by transverse stitching 28 to provide the hemmed end I4 and which hemmed porttion is provided with a spaced parallel line of stitching 29 and perpendicular stitching 30 extending from the line of stitching 28 to the terminals of the line of stitching 29 to dene the tunnel22', the stitching 28 being interrupted to provide tunnel outlets through which the extremities of the tape 20 protrude.

The chest protector B consists of a front or chest covering portion 3l having shoulder straps 32 extending from the lower opposite corners thereof which cross at the back of the infant and are slidably connected to the opposite upper corners of the front covering portion 3l by slide fastening elements 33 to take up the slack in the straps.

The front covering portion I0 of the diaper is provided with a pair of straps 34 having fastening elements 35 at the ends thereof adapted to engage with complementary fastening elements 36 at the upper end of the rear body covering portion I I for engagement with the shoulder straps 32 of the chest protector to position and retain the same in chest covering relation and to assistin holding up the upper portion of the diaper, while at the same time the straps 34 further function to retain the front and rear portions adjacent the top in overlapped relation.

1. In an infants undergarment, the combination of a diaper and a chest protector, said diaper including a front body covering portion, a. rear body covering portion and a crotch covering portion, said rear body portion extending forwardly into overlapped relationship with the front body covering portion adjacent the upper end thereof, interengageable fastening means on the rear and front body covering portions for connecting the same together in overlapped relation, said chest protector including a chest covering portion and shoulder straps connected to opposite diagonal corners thereof, and releasable fastening means on the front and rear body covering portions of the diaper for engagement with the said straps for positioning and retaining the chest protector in chest covering relation and for holding up the waist portion of the diaper.

In an infants undergarment, a diaper of two ply constructiton of elongated formation in plan comprising a substantially rectangular end por- .tion adapted to cover the front portion of the body below the Waist, an outwardly flared oppositely disposed end portion of greater width throughout than said rectangular end portion adapted to cover the rear portion of the body below the waist, and a medial portionA between said end portions having recessed side edges adapted to cover the crotch of the infant, tie strings secured to the opposite edges of the diaper at the juncture of the medial portion with the opposite end portions for retaining the recessededges of the medial portion in surrounding relation with the legs of the infant, said rectangular end portion having a laterally extending tunnel opening at its ends through the outer ply and l intermediate the .side edges thereof, a draw string having terminals protruding through the ends of said tunnel and tie strings secured to the sides of said outwardly flared opposite end portion adjacent the end thereof for engagement with the terminals of said draw string for connecting the opposite ends of the diaper togetherwith the side edges of said outwardly flared opposite end portion arranged in overlapping relation with said rectangular end portion.
