Description

Dec. 10, 1940.
J l.l-l. LAKRl-rz DIAPER Filed May 11. 1958 Patented Dec. 10, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to infants under garments, such as diapers and the like, and aims generally to improve existing garments of that type. l
One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of a pinless and buttonless diaper which is simple in construction and which may be readily applied to and removed from the infant.
A further object of the invention is the construction of a diaper and the like from a generally rectangular blank having integral ties formed as continuations of the side edges of the blank and adapted to be inserted through openings near the opposite end of the blank so as to fasten the garment to the infant.
A still further object is to provide in such a diaper bibs extending above the Walstline and substantially surrounding the body of the infant so as to provide additional warmth for the stomach and back of the infant immediately above the waistline.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating one preferred i'orm thereof.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 is a top view of 'the diaper according to the invention as worn by an infant; Fig. 2 is a. plan view of the diaper; Fig. 3 is a front view: and
:Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the fastening for the ties. The present garment, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, advantageously may be formed of a suitable blank I0 of desired textile material, for example, cotton flannel or the like. Preferably lthe blank Ill is elongated, shown herein as of generally rectangular form, providing front and back` edges I I and I2, and elongated 4p side edges I3, and may be formed of double layers of material so as to Ienclose a sheet of waterwashable rubberized cloth.
The blank I0 has'formed therein integral ties 45 I5 as continuations of the longitudinal side edges, and preferably a substantial amount of material is provided between the ties I5 to provide a stomach bib or protector I6, which advantageously may be formed with tapered side edges 5o I1. Preferably the ties are formed adjacent the front end II.
The back portion I2 of the blank is formed with two or more tie-receiving openings I8 and these 'are preferably located a substantial distanceinwardly from the edge thereof so as to provide a back bib I9. Preferably the back bib portion I9 is wider than the front bib portion Il so u to provide corners 2li adapted to bo folded proof material I4, for example a large sheet of (Cl. 12S-284) over the tapered side edges I`I of the front bib or protector I6 when the diaper is Worn by the infant.
In applying the diaper to the infant, the ties are first folded along lines 2| as continuations. 5 of the side edges II and the ends are then inserted through adjacent openings I8. The corners 20 of the back bib I9 are then folded over the tapered edges I1 of the front bib, forming a complete enclosure about the waist of the infant. 10 The ties I5 are then brought around the waist of the infant from the back to the front, vover the corners 20, thus holding all waist portions of the diaper snugly around the waist of the infant. l5
The ends of the ties I5 may be tied or otherwise fastened-to secure the diaper on the infant, but preferably one tie carries a pair of rings 2| adapted to receive the end ofy the other tie. As shown in Fig. 4, the free end of one tie I5 may 20 be passed through both rings, and then looped back over one ring and through the, other, to readily and securely fasten the ends ofthe ties together.
Advantages of the invention reside in the sim- 25 plicity of the construction providing a simple convenientl diaper which may be-readily applied and removed from the infant without the necessity of pins or buttons. The construction is such that there is a minimum of waste in cutting the 30 blanks of material which makes for economy of manufacture. Furthermore, the front and back bib portions protect and add warmth to the mid-portion of the torso immediately above the waistline. Furthermore, the garment is soft, .35 comfortable and waterproof.
Having described one 'embodiment of the invention, I claim: .fr
A diaper of the class described comprising an elongated blank of material having longitudinal 40 side edges and front and back end portions, ties integral with said blank and formed as for- .wardly extending continuations of the side portions of the blank, a front bib portion between the ties, said bib portion being spaced from said ties so as to form a recess between the ties and the sides of the bib portion, said ties being adjacent the front end portion and extending beyond the front bib portion, the back end of the blank being provided with a pair of tie-receiving openings a substantial distance above the edge: thereof, thereby providing a back bibv portion,
said ties being adapted to be secured together and to extend from the back to the front of the diaper upon the infant, said front and back end portions together with said ties being cut out of. a single blank of material.,
