UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BECK, OF GRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
IM PR'OVEM ENT IN HAM E-CLI PS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,673, dated September 16, 1879; application filed March 1 1879;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BECK, of (Jrawfordsville, in the count y of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hame-Olips, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for attaching the front end of a trace or tug to the hame.
The invention consists in a novel construction and combination, with the trace or tug, of a hook or clip for engagement with an eye or staple on the hame, and a locking-plate for securing said hook or clip in place on the trace or tug.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a trace provided with my improved clip and connected with a haine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken in the linew w of Fig. 1.
The trace or tug A is of the usual or any suitable description.
The clip is made in two parts-a hook-plate and a lockingplate-of any suitable metal, preferably malleable iron, of a width corresponding with the width of the trace, and of suitable length to grasp a sufficient portionof the length of the trace.
The hook-plate Bcarries at its front end a hook, O, which is greatly enlarged at the portion 0, which engages with the staple or eye on the hame, and is thereby the better enabled to endure the strain and friction consequent on such engagement.
The extremity of the hook terminates in a tongue, to, which extends backward parallel with the plate B a suitable distance beyond the front end of the trace.
The locking-plateEis of a length and width corresponding with that of the hook-plate. At 7 its front end is an enlargement, in which is formed a recess, f, corresponding in shape and' size with the tongue at of the hook O. The locking-plate E and the tongue (Z are perforated, and the hook-plate B is provided with tap-holes opposite these perforations.
The parts are placed in position for use in the following manner: The hook O is passed through the eye or staple of the hame, and the plate B is placed on the inner side of the front end of the trace, with the tongue d on the outer side, as shown in Fig. 2.
The locking-plate E is then placed on the outer side of the trace, so that the recess f will fit over the tongue 61, as shown.
The parts are then securely fastened by the two screws G G, passing through the perforations in the plate E' and tongue (1, and engagingwit-h the tapholesin the plate B. This clip may be used in connectionwith haines of any suitable description, either of wood or metal. It is here shown as applied to a wooden hame, H, having its eye or staple I formed with shanks i, passing through a plate, J, and
through the hame, on the inner side of which they are riveted down over washers 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate B, having hook (J and tongue d, in combination with the plate E, having recess f, the said plates being held together and to the end of the trace, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM F. BECK.
