HAME-TUG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,561, dated April 13, 1880.

Application filed February 17,1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMES SKIDMORE, JosEPH M. LISTON, and OREs'rEs SKIDMoRE, of Charleston, in the county of Goles and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs for Harness; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of our specification, in which Figure l is an edge, and Fig. 2 an inside, view of the tug.

Our invention relates to an improvement in hame-tugs for connecting the hames with the traces in the ordinary form of harness; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the metal clip or plate in connection with the leather tug, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A represents the forward end of the trace, and B is the leather tug, which is connected, as usual, to the trace by a buckle (not shown) arranged in the rear loop, a, of the tug.

Instead of fastening the forward end of the tug between the two rearwardly-projecting tangs of the hanie-clip O, as usual, we form the hanic-clip with a broad plate, cl, and bend the end 1) around, and, after passing it through the eye of the hame, bolt or rivet it directly to the metal of the plate. The wide plate-section cl also is formed with a transverse slot at its rear end, through which is hooked the forward portion of the leather tug, forming a hinge-joint at the front.

The forward end of the trace is held in the usual keeper 0, affiXed to the tug, and the front of this passes through a loop or keeper, d, connected to or formed with the metal of the clip.

The advantages of this construction are as follows: First, it gives flexibility to the tug at the back end of the metal clip and prevents the tug from breaking off at this point; seeondly, the additional metal keeper on the clip holds the front end of the trace from bursting out of the leather keeper, while the stiffness of the trace, as thus extended through the keeper on the clip, prevents any excessive looseness at the point where the clip hinges to the tug; thirdly, the construction described effects a saving of three inches of leather in the length of each hame-tug.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The metal clip 0, consisting of the broad and slotted plate cl and tang 1), arranged to be bolted directly to the plate 61, in combination with the tug looped through the slotted portion of the clip so as to form a hinging connection therewith, as described.

2. The metal clip 0, having slotted end d and metal keeper d, in combination with the hame-tng looped through the slot of the plate and the trace extended through the keeper 01, substantially as and for the purpose described.
