A Canadan Application?December@ SerialkNo.v 244,015v i.
My invention, relatesto a tobacco smoking pipe, and' has-for its' object means arranged therewith :for eliminating one ofthe objectionable features ofv all tobacco pipes,l that is the pluggingand clogging of the lower portion of the bowl and entrance into the stem, by the packing of the tobacco and-by condensation of the moisture, which prevents a free passage through the stem.
A further object is to. provide means whereby moisture is prevented from seeping vand accumulating in the stem, such as nicotine, tobacco juices' and saliva.v
. The essential features of the device embody f' an extension tube screw connected and screwed adjustably arranged with the mouth piece ofr the pipe and extending in longitudinal relation .through the bore of the stem, and communicat-` ingv Iinto the lower portion of the bowl, and
adapted to be adjusted and actuated to project into the bowl to dislodge any of. the tobacco Which'may become more or less packed and clogged'preventing a free draft for )the smoke (to be drawn from the bowl through they stem tol `the mouth piece. l
To the above purposes my inventionr consists in certain novel features of yconstruction and-l. `arrangement of parts. which will be hereinafter more fully describedy and-.illustrated in the'accompanying drawing, inr which fao Figure 1 isa sectional side elevational view -of the pipe. l
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevational View ofy the4 pipe showing the stem and .tube adjusted fori being inserted into the bowl.`
Figure 3 is a sectional-side elevational view of the pipe showing ,the stem inserted into the bowl.
y moved from the stem. f
` Figure 4 is a perspective view ofthe tube 're- Figure 5 is a perspective view of the plug, and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of a cork pack- Like letters of reference refer tolike vparts .throughout the several Views of the drawing.
Thev pipe proper in most respects is similar to thel standard tobacco pipe, embodyingythe bowl lIlLthe stem I'Iv and the detachable mouth piece I2. y Y y .Formed in the stem is the bore I3, somewhat larger than in the standard pipe, the bore extends to within a short distance with the bowl,
from which a smaller bore I4 is formed and com- `municates into the lower portion of the bowl.`
Fitted in the inner end of the bore I3, and
engaging against a shouldervformedby the re-kk spective bores I3 and I4, is a. packing plug A preferably composed of cork or some similari material, having a central bore a formed vin longitudinal relation therethrough. The essential object of the plug is'to` preventmoisture from entering into the bore I3.
V Cemented or otherwise secured in the bore I3, intermediate the end of thestem and at a slight interval from the outer end of the packing plug A is a plug B composed of vulcanite or any suitable material, having formed therein a square bore b.
.Fitted in the bore I3, and passing through the boresv formed in the respective plugs B and A,
is a metal tube comprising four sections and i shapes-namely, a plunger portion c, a key porn tion d, a push coupler portion e, and an externally screw connection f.
'I'he plunger portion vc of the tube extends through the bore a, of the plug A and into the f communicating bore Ill, the key portion d engages in the square bore of the plug B to prevent the tube from turning when the stem is` being screw adjustedon the screw connection f. vThe coupler portion e of the tubev is adapted to' slidablev action within the bore I3 and con.-y
jointly projecting into a countersink l5, in the end of :the mouth piece contiguous with the internally threadedybore I6 in the mouth piece i2. vTo dislodge any blockage. and packing of the tobacco at the entrance of the smoke passage inthe tube, through which the "smoke is drawn to the mouthpiece I2, the mouthpiece is turned in the direction to unscrew on the screw connection f until a slight interval separating it from the end of the shank II has been effected.
A forward pressure is ythen exerted on the mouthpiece to force the tube inwardly to cause the plunger portiony c of the tube to insert into the bowl and dislodge any of the packed tobacco o away'from the bore opening Ill.
AThe mouthpiece I2 may then be turned in the opposite direction `to screwup on the screw` connection, and by contacting with the end of the stem will drawthe tube backwardly, andl Awithdrawftheplunger end of the tubefrom the bowl, into normal position and leave a clear and free area against the end of the tube.
The key portion d engaging in the square bore b of the plug B, secured in the bore I3, prevents the tubefrom turning `when screwing and unscrewing the mouthpiece on the end ofthe tube, to force the tube inwardly or for withdrawing back to normal position.
Slight'modifcations maybe made in the shape of the tube and the means for preventing it from turning when making the actuating adjustments' without deviating from the nature of my invention. v; Having described my invention, what I claim 1.` In a tobacco pipe, a tube arranged in adjustable relation with the mouthpiece thereof,.
said tube extending in longitudinal relation through the bore of the stemof said pipe, a
plug formedv With a square bore fitted and secured in the bore of the said stein, said tube passing through the said plug, a portion of the" said tube being squared to register with thesaidf bore in said plug, to prevent the tube from turn-r ing when the mouthpiece is being adjusted there?v on, said tube being adapted to be actuated by' the said mouthpiece in longitudinal relationvt'o be inserted and Withdrawn from the boy/I ofthe pipe.
2,. In a tobacco pipe,v avtube formed and ern-K` l bodying a plunger portion, a key portion, a push coupler portion and a screw connection, said tube being adjustably connected with the mouth'- l piece of the said pipe, j the said tube extending in longitudinal relation through thebore of they l stem of said pipe, a plug formed with` a square. ,v i
bore'tted and secured-.inf'the ybore of said stem,
the said ltube extendingthrough the said plug, andthe key portion thereofreg'isteringfwith the villini/aonA nnsson.`
10v said plug to prevent thetubefrom turning when the mouthpiece is being adjusted therewith, the j Hplunger portion of the .said tubebeingv adapted .Ito insert into the bowl of 'the pipe by an inwardly 4pushing on the mouthpiece, and withdrawn. Aftherefrominto normal lposition by screw turn-f1' "ing the mouthpiece upon the said tubeand rthe [engagement with .theend of the stem of the said pipa Y, 1... e
