WITNESSES; INVENTEJR, I
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
MARTHA BYRKIT, OF KNIGHTSTOWN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAP-TABLE, WORK-BOX, AND WORK-STAND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,679, dated July 22, 1879 application filed November 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IlIARTHA BYRKIT, of Knightstown, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined Lap-Table, fork-Box, and \Vork-Stand, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a device that can be used as a lap-table, a workbox, or a work-stand.
My invention consists of the new construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be fully described and set forth.
In the accompanyin drawings in which like letters of reference in the different figures indicate like parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved table, with the work-box folded up. Fig. 2 represents the same, with the cover of the work-box removed and inserted in a slot at the end of the table, thus forming a lap-table. Fig. 3 represents the work-box folded down, making the top of the table larger.
A represents any ordinary table, which is provided with drawers H at one end, and a slot (not shown) in the other end, to receive the cover E of the work-box, that forms alaptable. The work-box is composed of the stationary piece or bottom (3, which is attached to the table-top B, having side folding wings, D D, attached thereto by hinges, with extension folding side wings, D D, hinged to the ends of the side wings, D, and a central end wing, J, hinged to one end of the stationary bottom 0, as shown in Fig. 3.
The side, extension, and end wings, D D J, when folded up form a box on top of the table, similar to that shown in Fig. 2.
The cover E of the work-box is provided with a hinged leaf, F, that forms one end of the work-box when placed over it, as shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the table as a laptable the cover E F is removed from the workbox and inserted in a slot or receptacle form ed in one end of the table-frame, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving the work-box in condition to hold the work contained therein.
Should a larger surface of the table-top be required, then the sides D D, extension side wings, D D, and end wing, J, are folded down, as shown in Fig. 3.
\Vhen the cover E F is on the work-box, and it is desired to place any article therein or remove anything therefrom, the end F is raised up.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
In a combined lap-table, work-box, and workstand, the table A, having one end provided with a slot or opening to receive the re1novable cover E F, the folding top consisting of the stationary part 0, having sid'e wings, D D, and end wing, J, hinged thereto, with side flaps, D D, hinged to the ends of the side wings, D D, in the manner shown, whereby a receptacle or box is formed above the table when the parts are folded up and the removable top placed thereon, the work-table formed when the parts are folded down, and a laptable formed when the removable cover is inserted in the slot at the end of the table, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two snbseribin g witnesses.
MARTHA BYRKIT.
