Cloak-Blanket. y No. 215,619. Patented May 20,- 1879 IN EJV'TOR N. PETERS. PncrLrmocmPHEn, WASHINGTON, D CA UNITED STATES PATENT ll'IGElK CHARLES A. HODGMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HODGMAN & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOAK-BLANKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,619. dated May 20, 1879; application filed March 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HODGMAN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloak-Blankets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a representation of a face of my cloak-b1anket, and Fig. 2 is a View showing the same folded up.
My invention relates to that class of coverings for soldiers, coachlnen, and the like resembling the ponchos of the Spanish, and used for similar purposes, made of rubber, rubberlined cloth, water-proofcloth, and the like 5 and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of such parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In carrying out my invention I employ preferably a rectangular sheet of rubber cloth or other impermeable material properly bound and stayed, as shown, in one of the longitudinal sides of which I forni a V-shaped recess, to the edges of which I secure the longest parallel side of a trapezoid, which forms the collar when used as a cloak, and is adapted to be turned 'down or up as a guard against weather, as desired.
Upon one side of this Vshaped recess I attach a strap, which operates with a gripe or other buckle secured to the material on the opposite side of the said recess to secure the cloak closely around the neck and body of the person Wearing the same.
A proper buckle'secured at the point of attachment of the strap serves to operate with such strap, when the blanket is folded, in securing the same compactly.
It will be understood that the collar or trapezoid strip may be provided with a hole and button, or other proper securing device, to hold the said collar dat and compact When the article is used as a blanket, the inclined ends of such strip forming a perfect plane with the edge of that side of the material.
Other securing or attaching devices may be employed, such as eyelets, buttons, hooks, &c., properly stayed in the material upon the co1- lar-edge.
This invention would serve efficiently for a soldier, the collar portion allowing more perfeet security against wet and Weather` than the before-mentioned poncho, and being adapted to be secured upon the knapsack in its compact form, as shown.
The collar serves efficiently, when turned down, against falling rain, and, when standing, against drifting rain or Wind.
The device may be used by coachnnen, serving efficiently for man or beast.
Referrin g to the drawings, A represents the rectangular sheet of water proof material, being provided with proper desired securing devices and a V-shaped recess, B, as shown. C represents a strip in the form of a trapezoid secured on its longest parallel side to the edges of said recess B, forming the collar, which being folded upon itself and secured forms a perfect plan of the rectangular sheet, as shown.
D represents a strap, and D a frictionbuckle, which, operating together, serve to secure the device around the body as a cloak. A buckle, E, serves with the strap D to secure the device compactly, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim- 1. The rectangular sheet A, having' securing devices and neck-recess B, combined with the trapezoid strip C, as and for the purpose set forth.
2.' The part A B, collar C, strap D, buckle D', and buckle E, combined and adapted to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. HODGMAN.
Witnesses:
ROBERT M. BARR, JAMES J. SHEEHY.
