, a corporation of Penn- 1937, Serial No. 16am 1 'Claim. (01. 248-152) My invention relates to a new and useful display device and more particularly to a display device of the knock-down type which is usually made from scored and otherwise shaped card- 5 board or the like, and which is especially adapted for displaying advertising merchandise.
My invention still further relates to a type of display device which is capable ofassuming the position of a natural person sitting on the edge of 'a display counter or the like with the feet dangling over theedge of such counter or the like, such display to carry actual merchandise or a sufliciently accurate representation thereof.
My invention still further relates to a display device of-"this character which can be "used as a premium, that is, one which advertises the product until the product is sold and then is adapted to be given away with the product sold for amuse,- ment purposes such as the well known "Charlie McCarthy, the ventriloquist's dummy, or the like.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig, 1 represents a plan view of a blank from which one form of a display device embodying my device is made.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1 showing the display device assembled into the posture of a sitting person. l r
Fig. 3 represents an. end view of Fig. 2. FlFig. v4 represents a section on line l-l of Fig. 5 represents, on an enlarged scale, a plan view of Fig. 2. l Fig. 6 represents a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of construction.
Fig. '7 represents a view similar to'Fig. 2 of the modified form shown in Fig. 6. I
Fig. 8 represents, on an enlarged scale, a view partly in section and partly in end elevation of 40 Fig.- 7. r I
Fig. 9 represents a view similar to Fig. 7 of a still further modified form of construction.
Fig. 10 represents an end elevation of Fig. 9. .Referring to the drawings in which like refer-" ence characters represent like parts and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, my novel display device consists of generally two portions I and 2, the former representing the portion of the body from the waist up, and the latter, in combination with the bottom of the upper portion, representing a body from the waist down. The two sections l. and 2 are secured together along the band 3 which forms the lower extremity of the upper portion l and which is secured to the rear side and slightly below the upper edge I- of the lower section 2. The band 3 is scored at 5 to constitute a hinged connection with the broad band 6, which is scored at I, to form a hinged connection with the body portion I proper. When the device is assembled in the sitting position as best shown in Fig. 3; the band 6 extends horizontally to form thelap L of a natural person, while the section 1 forms the bust and head, and the section 2 forms the legs, which may be crossed or not, or which may be dressed in masculine or feminine attire as desired. The band 6 is provided with endextenslons 8 which have the tongues 9 adapted to engage the slots l formed in an adjacentpart of' the body I, and the ends of the upper edge 4 of the lower portion 2 (that is, the part thereof which extends above the score I when the device is assembled) are also provided with tongues l2 adapted to engage slots It in the tabs 8 to form the boxiike arrangement best seen in Fig. 4. The boxlike arrangement thus formed extends entirely across the length of the lap L of the person, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, and the width and depth-ofthe boxlike arrangement will vary with the width of the band 8 (between the score lines and 'l) and the width or height of the tabs'8 from their outer edges I! to' the hinge score-lines l8. .The circular portion 20, adjacent the head 2|, may be shaped or inscribed, or both, to represent the object being displayed or something connected therewith, and,
while the composite figure thus produced independently constitutes .a display by having the various visible faces thereof suitably inscribed and decorated, the object being advertised, in its physical, tangible form, can be deposited in the box formed to represent the lap Lof a natural person thus combining the inscriptional representation designating the object, together with the physical, tangible presence of the object itself. 7 In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 I have shown a modified form, of construction in which the entire display device is made of an integral piece scored at 22 to form the upper body portion- 24 and the lower portion 26 with an intermediate band 28 constituting the lap L of the person as best seen in Fig. 8. The legs 26 are separated from the band 28 by the scoring 30 to give them a hinged connection and are out completely from the band 28 to form the knees 32. When the device is in its flat shipping condition, the knees 32 lie flush, and when the device is erected into the sitting position, as in Fig. 8, the knees 32 project above theplane of the band 28 which constitutes the lap L. The entire device may be decorated and inscribed suitably to represent the object to 55 be advertised, which, in its physical and tangible form, is positioned in the lap L. In order to make a premium or gift out of the display device after the object being advertised has been sold out, I provide the upper portion 24, with openings 34 representing the eyes and another opening 36 representing the mouth, and back of these openings I provide a toy device for moving the eyes and the month, said device consisting of a flexible element having the legs 38 secured to the rear of the portion 24 to only a part of their entire extent as will be seen from Fig. 8, and at their upper ends the legs 38 are deflected downwardly as at 39 to form the section 40 which normally registers with the eyes 34 and mouth 36. From the section 40 extends downwardly the handle 42 which is freely movable between the legs 38. In
this normal position the handle 42, as well as the section 40, appear as shown in full lines in Fig. 8, and, when it is desired to wiggle the mouth and the eyes of the figure, the handle 42 is pulled down to its dotted line position andthe unsecured portions of the leg 38 curve out, also as shown in dotted lines. a
In Fig. 91 have shown another orm of a display device which may be construe ed as shown or identical with the construction of Figs. 6 to 8, but in which the display device is made or two separate pieces, the upper piece 46 of which represents thevbody from the knees up, and the lower portion 48 of which represents the body from the knees down, the portion 48 being secured to the portion 46 along the band 50 which is scored at 52 to afl'ord a hinged connection so that the knees 54 may extend up and, in combination with the portion of the limbs 56 above the knee, form a lap L for the reception of the merchandise to be advertised. In addition to any suitable inscriptions on the face of the display device of Fig. 9, I may form integral or separate portions 58 and 60 which-would represent packaged units of the merchandise advertised.
Having thus described my invention, what I 10 portion representing the limbs of such body, and 15 an intermediate portion representing the lap 01. such body, when the latter is in a sitting position, said intermediate portion being hinged along its rear edge to the lower edge of said upper portion and being hinged along its front edge to said lower portion along a line below the upper edge of said lower portion, whereby a front wall is formed extending above the horizontal plane of said intermediate portion, extensions hinged on the opposite ends of said intermediate portion and 'forming end walls therefor, and means for locking said end walls to said upper portion and said front wall, in a plane vertical to the plane of said intermediate portion, whereby an open top box is formed with said intermediate portion as 30 its bottom.
