.This invention relates to style designing sets for use in instructing one in the art of clothing design One of the important features of the invention resides in a flat mannequin and a simulating garment therefor, the latter being of such a simple construction as to enable a child to cut out garment shaped pieces from fabric material according to patterns and arrange each piece upon a flat body form, which form imparts the appearance of a garment when in worn position upon the mannequin. By making up a set of different style garment simulating forms, the same may be interchangeably associated with the mannequin according to the whim of the child.

A further feature of the invention is the provision of a mannequin display in which the mannequin or figure is formed of two body sections provided with interfitting parts, one of which has interlocking engagement with the garment form member to secure the same in wearing position upon the mannequin.

Additional features of the invention are to provide a style designing set which is educational in its use; simple of construction and assembly; inexpensive of manufacture; and attractive when in its display form.

Other novel features of the invention will become apparent as the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which;

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a style display mannequin constructed in accordance with our invention.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view with a portion of the base broken away and shown in section.

Figure 3 is a rear elevational view with a por tion of the easel broken away.

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings by reference charac: ters, the numeral lll designates our style design.- ing set in its entirety, which broadly includes a mannequin A, a mannequin supporting base B,

a prop C, and a garment style form member D for association with the mannequin A.

The mannequin A is illustrated in the form of the full length figure of a woman, although it may be that of a girl, man, or boy if so desired, depending upon the style of garment to be displayed in association therewith. The mannequin A is constructed of stilf flat cardboard and includes a lower body and leg section II and an upper body and head section l2. The lower section ll embodies a lower waist portion l3 and leg portions |,4|4. The free extremities of the'leg portions are shaped to form feet and extending downwardly therefrom are tongue extensions l5-l5. The upper end of the section I l is provided with a central inwardly extending notch IS. The rear side of the section H is provided with a flat eye H, the same being formed by pasting the ends of a U-shaped paper strip directly to the cardboard section.

The upper section I2 includes an upper body portion 18, arm portions ill-l9 and a headportion 20. The section I2 is rovided with spaced narrow slits 2l2l which extend inwardly from the lower edge thereof and the cardboard material betweentheslits constitutes a tongue 22.. In-

tegral with the tongue 22 is a tongue extension 23 s of a length greater than the depth of the notch IE but of substantially the same width. The rear side of the section I2 is provided with a fiat eye 24 which is formed similar to that of the eye I! and which vertically alines therewith when the sections H and I2 are assembled in mannequin forming position.

The front sides of the sections H and I2 may have human features printed, painted or lithographed thereon to impart a human likeness to the mannequin.

The mannequin supporting base B is constructed of stiff cardboard and comprises four connected side walls 25 which are integral with and bent downwardly from an elevated flat platform 26, the meeting corners of said side walls being secured together [by lapping. glue flaps or the like. The platform 26 i provided with an elongated slot 21 which is disposed adjacent and parallel to the rear edge of the platform. Two small slots 2828 are provided in the platform 26 and are disposed adjacent the front edge thereof, said slots 28-28 being spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the tongues I-I 5 of the mannequin sections I I, and which slots respectively receive said tongues when the mannequin is in supportedposition uponthebas'eB.

The prop C is constructed of a single elongated strip of stiff cardboard and includes a straight narrow upper portion 29 and an enlarged lower portion 30.

The style form member D comprises a blank of stiff cardboard 3| which i shown in the drawings quin sections II and I2 against separation. The tongues I5-l5 at the lower ends of the leg poras having the outline of a ladys dress, suit, or"

coat, in that it embodies a V-neck portion and long sleeves. members may be provided, such as the short sleeve, U-shaped neck of the form member D shown in Figure 12. The cardboard blank 3| includes an upper body portion 32, a lower skirt portion 33 and an intermediate waist portion 34. In a complete style designing outfit, the same may include a single mannequin A and a plurality of style form blanks 3|, together with patterns and a variety of pieces of fabric material. A piece of fabric material is cut to fit over the front face of the blank form 3|, and this cutting of thefabric material to fit the blank form is cut slightly oversize so as to permit folding of the fabric over the edges of the blank form and fiat against the rear face side thereof. The blank form 3| is shown as having its front face flatlycovered by cloth fabric 35, the edge portions of which are folded over the edges of the blank form to provide'attaching tab portions 36, which are pasted or glued to the rear faceof the form 3|. Due to the irregular shape of the blank form, the folded edges of the fabric are slit at intervals with portions of the fabric material cut away as at 40. In Figures 1 and 12 of the drawings the design of the form members imparts the appearance of a dress, but it will b understood that other garments may be designed, such as a two-piece suit ensemble, sportswear, evening gowns, bathing suits, negligees, and undergarments, dependin upon the skill of a user.

Assume that a, fabric covering has been applied to a blank form 3| and it is desired to arrange the same in position upon the mannequin A. With the sections II and I2 of the mannequin in separated relation, the operator inserts the left leg (looking at Figures 3 and 8) through the fiat cardboard eye 3'! carried by the rear of the skirt portion 33 of the form member D until the crotch portion of the mannequin section I I engages said eye. The waist portion l3 of the form'member is now in a position below and adjacent the lower edge of a second flat eye 38 carried by the rear of the form member D. The eye 38 and notch I 6 are thus in vertical alinement, whereupon the operator may now insert the tongue extension 23 downwardly through the eye 38. IAS the tongue extension passes below the eye 38, it is flexed rearwardly to lap the waist portion I3 to enable further downward sliding of the section I2 relative to section I I to cause the tongue 22 to enter the eye 38 and the ends of the eye to enter the slits 2I-2I, and thereby effect a firm interlocking of the section I I of the mannequin .A and the form member D. The rearwardly flexed tongue extension 23 has its inner portion snugly interfitting between the sides of the notch I6, while However, various shapes of form its outer free endoverlaps the rear of the upperportion of the mannequin section II. The lower edge of the section I2 is in meeting engagement with the top edge of the lower section II as best seen in Figure 3. When in position upon the mannequin A, the form member D overlies and conforms substantially to those parts of the mannequin which it is intended to cover.

Preparatory to mounting the mannequin upon the base, the narrow portion'29 of the prop C is inserted successively through the eyes I! and 24, whereupon the prop actsas a key for firmly connecting the mannetions of the mannequin are inserted into the respective slots 28--28 of the base B. The enlarged section 30 of the prop C may be flexed rearwardly and its free lower end inserted into the slot 21, which as best seen in Figure 2, serves to support the mannequin in an upright rearwardly inclined position.

'By, superposing the fabric covered garment form over the mannequin, a third dimension appearance is imparted to the relatively flat display when looking at the front thereof.

It will be understood that the parts may be dis-- connected in a manner reverse from their order of assembly to enable the interchanging of different style garment designs with a single mannequin.

While we have. shown and described what we consider to be the most practical embodiment of our invention, we wish it to be understood that such changes in construction, design, and materials as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired, without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;

1. A display device comprising a fiat rigid cardboard mannequin, a flat rigid form member of a shape conforming to the outline of a garment comprising a blank of cardboard having a fabric covering the front side thereof, said form.memher being positioned over the front of the mannequin in conforming relation thereto with the fabric covered front side facing outwardly, and interlocking means between the form memher and the mannequin for securing the same together.

2. In combination, a display mannequin comprising an upper body section and a separate lower body section, both of said sections being constructed of flat stifi cardboard, the lower edge of the top body section being disposed in engagement with the top edge of the lower body section to cause the body sections to be disposed in the same flat plane, a fiat rigid body garment form member positioned over the body portion at the front of the mannequin, an eye provided on the rear of said form member, a tongue at the lower portion of said upper body member extending through said eye and serving to secure the form member in position upon the mannequin, and a tongue extension on said tongue having friction a1 engagement with the side walls of a notch provided in the top edge of the lower body sections,

3. A display device comprising in combination, a mannequin including a lower body section having spaced apart leg portions, an upper body section separate from said lower body section,

both of said body sections being constructed of flat rigid cardboard material with the top edge of the lower body section disposed in edge to edge engagement with the lower edge of the upper body section, the lower portion of the upper body section having spaced slits extending inwardly from the lower edge thereof, the material between said slits constituting a tongue, a rigid flat garment form member, an eye provided adjacent the lower portion of the form member at the rear thereof through which one of the leg portions of the lower body section passes, a second eye at the rear of the form member through which said tongue extends, a tongue extension on said tongue, and a notch provided in the top of the lower body section into which said tongue extension snugly fits for frictional engagement with the side Walls thereof.

A display device comprising in combination, a mannequin constructed of stiff cardboard material, said mannequin including a lower body section and a separate upper body section, interfitting means between the lower portion of the upper body section and the upper portion of the lower body section, a pair of vertically alined eyes respectively provided on the rear of the upper and lower body sections, and a bendable prop having its upper portion extending through the alined eyes to key the body sections together and to prevent accidental disengagement of the interfitting means, the lower portion of said prop extending downwardly and rearwardly at an angle to support the mannequin in an upstanding rearwardly inclined position.

5. A display device comprising a flat mannequin, a flat rigid fabric covered garment form member arranged over the front side of the body of the mannequin, and means at the rear side of the mannequin for securing the form member in position relative thereto.

In combination, a display mannequin comprising two separable body sections constructed of fiat stiff cardboard arranged in complementary edge to edge relation and disposed in the same flat plane, interfitting elements at the meeting edges of the body sections for securing the same together in the aforesaid relation, a body garment form member arranged over the front of the mannequin, and interlocking means between one of the interfitting elements of one of the body sections and the body form member for securing the form member thereto.

'7. A display device comprising in combination, a flat cardboard mannequin, a flat body garment form member comprising a cardboard base having the outline of a body garment, an appropriate sheet of fabric of a shape conforming substantially to the outline of the base and slightly larger than the base to provide fold edges, the sheet of fabric being flatly positioned over the front face of the base and covering the entire surface thereof, the fold edges of the sheet of fabric being folded rearwardly over the adjacent corresponding edges of the base and flat against the rear face of the base and adhesively secured thereto, and means for removably securing the body form member in position over the front of the body of the mannequin.

8. A display device as set forth in claim 7 in which the fold edges of the sheet of fabric are provided with spaced cutaway portions of a length approximating the Width of the fold portions to facilitate smooth folding of the fold portions fiat against the rear face of the base.
