N0."7556'89 4'5 Claims. :(Cl.:46'157) This invention relates, :in :general, :paper .dolls .and, in particular, to a new and improved paper doll body construction for use with paper doll clothingzand the like having bendable tabs thereon and :adapte'cltto overlie rthe paper doll ;body.and to -be supported thereon.

With the presently prevailing types :of construction, a doll is usually made of cardboard, with one surface printed .to resemble a human figure dressed in .underclothes and/or other garments. Additional clothes for the doll are printed .on paper 'to-be cutout and fastened to ,the dollby the child whoplays with the doll and its clothes. The :usual method .of :affixing :paper clothes to the cardboard doll is by means of paper tabs protruding from the edges of each article of paper clothing, these tabsbeing apart of'the same piece of paper as the article of clothing and cut out by the child in "the same cutting operation. These paper tabs are designed :to be folded backward around the edges of the cardboard ;doll .to hold the article ,of clothing in place on the ,doll by means of the hook-effect .of the folded tabs around ,the edges of the doll. For convenience hereinafter this type of structure will be referred to :as the fusual paper ldoll.

,In practice, this method of afiixing an .article of clothing to a cardboard doll causes considerable difiiculty for the child when playing with the dollsand clothes. The difficulty arises from the fact that the labs, :as now .used, do not holdthe article .of clothing securely in;plac,eion the doll. The hooking effect of a paper tab is relatively weak. That is true first because a paper :tab does not remain in the form of a hook ,which is sufficiently tight and strong. However firmly the :tab may be vbent or creased, it has a natural resilience which causes it to tend to return ,to ,the original ,plane of the sheet from which it was :bent. .Secondly, r-since the resilience of a tab causes it to move .awayfrom the back of :the doll, it protrudes. As a nesult it ,may he hit by the users fingers or other objects, thereby tending either to further unfold the tab or .even to dislodge the entire article of clothing, depending on where ,and how the tab is :contacted. As .a result, ,the article of cloth ng tends to :fall off easily, particularly when the doll is moved. This is ,annoying and frustrating when the child, while playing with the d lls. at empts tomove them abouti vp t i simulate human activity. Thus the amount of play that is practical in using paper dolls and paper clothes as now,contws ed s se ou y l m ed Various attempts have been made to overcome this dilficulty, one such type of construction making use of magnets instead of tabs, with the magnets being placed in or on the dolls and plates of ferrous metals placed corresponding positions on the article of paper clothing. This method of construction is effective, but has disadvantages among which are the following:

(c) The article of paper clothing is usually afiixed .to the .doll bylmeans of "only one smallareaof contact where the magnet in the doll attractsfa'nd holds gthemetal plateafiixedtothe article of clothing. This *method of construction is somewhat eifective, but .has the following disadvantages: I I v (.a This method too-is relatively expensive, ;not :quite as expensive as the .magnetic method, butsubstantially more expensive than the usual paper dolldescr ibed above.

,Another type .of doll makes use of the flannelboard, type of paperhaving clothes madeof cloth. The clothing clings to the flannel-like surface of the doll. But the sur; faces of the doll and of the clothing cannot haven-a fine printed surface like paper. I Furthermore, these latter two constructions are expensive. 7, v

,Accordingly it is a principal. object of our invention to prov-idea new and improved doll construction .which improves the conventional prior art type paper dolls and accomplishes the following ob'jectivesz- I I (a) vArti les .of clothing may be heldiirmly thereto without any of the disadvantages of the methods of construction and use above described; 7 I H (b) Is substantially lower in cost than other doll con: structions of the type described where attempts were made to improve the usual paper doll and paper doll clothing.

(d) Is particularly adapted to hold an article of clothingin position by means of a plurality of areas of con tactaround'theedge s of the doll, leaving no areas of the tioning material.

(f) Makes use of conventional tabs on articles of clothing as now manufactured, but causes them to hold the articles of clothing firmly in position. Furthermore, fewer tabs are needed than in the case of the usual paper doll.

(g) Makes it possible for a child to fasten the article of clothing to the doll and to unfasten and remove the article from the doll very easily.

(h) Permits the articles of clothing to be fastened to the doll over other articles of clothing, and permits small articles of clothing and accessories to'be securely fastened in appropriate positions on the doll. In this connection, accessories employing a single-tab may be firmly secured. (i) The tabs are substantially entirely concealed, thereby giving a more realistic appearance. This makes it possible to make a dollappe'ar realistic from the back as well as the front, and permitsthe wearing of clothes o'n'its back as well as its front. I

(j) By concealing the tabs, keeps them from being contacted in use thereby preventing accidental displacement of the tab or the entire article of clothing.

(k) Permits the child to change the personality, ap-

pearance and character represented by the doll, thus making it possible to have one doll represent any number of additional personalities or individuals.

Briefly, we accomplish the above general and specific objects of our invention by the provision of a doll having imprinted thereon, where necessary or desirable, the facsimile of a human person (or animal or other being), which doll is made of cardboard or other similarly functioning material and to which is operatively connected a back piecemade of cardboard, or other similarly func- The back piece is cut either in substantially the same size, shape, and contour as the doll itself or slightly larger, or smaller. But it may also be formed as only a partial back piece covering only a part of the back of the'doll and affixed to the back by any suitable means. This whole or partial back piece may also be made integral with the front piece, at their common connection, and folded in back-to-back relationship. This whole or partial back piece is firmly held to the doll only in certain areas of the dolls back, orlheld only at the fold line and at the base. The articles of clothing may be fastened by inserting the tabs thereof between the doll and the back piece; the edges of the back piece, or the edges of the doll, or both, being temporarily flexed apart ,to whatever extent is necessary to facilitate the insertion of the tabs.

With the tabs so disposed between the doll, and the 'back piece, the tabs are not exposed and cannot be contacted accidentally and dislodged. Also, being held between. the doll andiback piece, the tabs cause the clothing to stay in place until the child desires to remove it.

' The actjof inserting the tabs between the edges of the back piece and the-edges of the doll can be made easier, if desired, by making the contour of the back piece slightly larger than the contour of the front piece so that the back piece serves as a guide for insertion of the tabs. Another way of making it easierto insert the tabs is to separate the'back piece from the doll a relatively short distance, as by-the insertion of one ormore inter-1 mediate pieces of cardboard or other material between thedoll and the back piece at one or more points, such points being of' limited area between the doll and the back piece, sothat the other areas of the back piece and Qing or aflixing of such an intermediate piece or other stated structure may be accomplished in any suitable manner by attaching it either tolthe front piece or the back piece, or, it may be made a part of a stand for the paper doll.

In those forms of our invention where an intermediate piece, or spacer, is employed between the doll and back piece to make it easier to insert the tabs between them (instead of having the doll and back piece formed so as to resiliently grip the tabs between them) the article of clothing still stays firmly in position because the natural resilience in the folded tabs causes them to bear resiliently against a surface such as the inner surface of the back piece. That is, the tabs are not loosely disposed in the space between the back piece and doll.

Our paper doll construction also is provided with one of several new and improved stands which permit the paper dolls to stand upright or to be laid down in a very realisticmanner, and aswill be understood from the more detailed description hereinafter, this stand may form a part of the means to connect the back piece to the front piece, or it may be a part of the means to affix the inter mediate pieces between the back piece and the front piece. Too, we have found a high degree of realism obtained from many of our stands since the feet of the subject doll will benear the supporting surface and in some embodiments of our stands the doll may be laid down simulating sleeping, without detachment of any of the parts thereof.

Accordingly, still further objects and advantages of our invention are realized as will be apparent from the above brief description. These are (1) the utilization of stands for the dolls which form part of the spacing means be tween the front piece and the back piece or form a part of the means for afiixing the back piece to the front piece; (2) utilization of stands which have a high degree of realism and permit the children to simulate human activities such as standing or sleeping without unfastening any or all of the parts of the doll; (3) permits the utilization of articles of clothing, both on the front and on the back of the doll, where desirable; (4) adds realism to the dolls by providing a means for both a front form as well as a front and back form, for which clothing and the like may be utilized; (5) provides a doll which is sturdy and strong and which can be assembled with or without guidance, either providing a fixed relationship or a resilient relationship between the front and back pieces to permit ready insertion of clothing tabs.

Now, in order to acquaint those skilled in the art with the present invention and the manner of making and using the same, we shall describe, in connection with the accompaying drawings, preferred embodiments of the invention.

FIGURE 1 is a front view of one embodiment of a paper doll constructed in accordance with the teachings of our invention, and illustrating to advantage how articles of clothing and accessories may be worn by the doll;

Turning now to the drawings and in particular to FIG- URES l, 2 and 3 thereof, it can be seen that we have illustrated one embodiment of our paper doll invention, illustrated in its entirely as 10, and comprising a front piece 11 of paperboard, havingla miniature human form 12 depicted thereon. Front piece 11, in this embodiment, is connected at the top of the form 12; by a hinge portion illustrated at 13 to a paperboard back piece 14 (FIG. 3) which is of the same general shape and contour as the front piece, but slightly smaller, with a margin 15 provided by the difference between the periphery of the back piec 14 and the front piece 11. As illustrated in these figures, a plurality of tabs 16 of paper clothes 'or garments 17 are folded in a conventional inanner and inserted between the back piece and the front piece, as illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3.

As previously mentioned, one important feature of our invention is the means for holding the clothing tabs, such as 16-, on the doll itself. This type of function was not heretofore available in prior art dolls since small articles with single tabs could not be firmly held on the doll, such prior art dolls lacking the gripping function accomplished by having a backpiece and a front piece.

The carrying or wearing of small articles or accessories by single tabs is also possible when the doll if) has one hand and its related arm spaced from the body of the doll, as shown in FIGURE 3A. There the front piece 11 and back piece 14 may have their [respective hand portions 36 and 36 secured together at their outer ends, as by adhesive, for example. A pair of

Back portion 25 is also provided with a tab 32, a quadrant in the embodiment illustrated, cut out of section 30 and notched as at 33, which tab '32 may be folded about its vertical scoring 34 and received in a vertical notch 35 in the front portion 24 so as to lock the back piece and the front piece as one unit. As can be seen in this embodiment, the front piece 11 and the back piece 1-4 are held together at the top by the fold 13, and at the bottom by the tab 32 and the

Furthermore, the doll is sturdy and strong, is easy to assemble without adhesive,

. and the back piece facilitates the putting of clothes and other accessories on the doll or taking them off, as the case maybe, by the resilient relationship between Furthermore, by means of the two pieces, the stand holds the doll upright without separate'pieces which may become lost and, as can be seen, great realism is accomplished.

-In addition to these features, we have found. that realism is enhanced by the fact that the tabs themselves ing play.

Turning now to FIGURES 4' and 5, there is illustrated another embodiment of our invention, depicting a human form illustrated in its entirety as 43, having a front piece 41 and a back piece 42. Front piece 4,1 in this embodiment differs from the embodiment illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 in that the front piece is formed independently of and separate from the back piece 42, and is spaced from the back piece 42 by means of an elongated insert or spacing means 43. This spacing means is preferably spaced laterally of the outer edges of the doll to permit the insertion of clothing tabs and may be of the same material and thickness asthe thickness of the front and back pieces or can be of more than one such thickness where necessary or desirable. 41, 42 by any suitable means such as by adhesive, either at the time of manufacture, or by providing simple instructions with or without the doll itself being marked as to where to place the adhesive.

As can be appreciated in this embodiment, tabs such as 16 on the clothing 17 illustrated in FIGURES l, 2 and 3, as well as accessories, such as 13 and 21, may be conveniently used on this embodiment. We have found that the spacing means, contrary to expected results, does not lessen the ability of the tabs of the clothes to remain on the doll. This result we attribute to the natural resilience in the folded tabs which causes them to bear resiliently against a surface, either the inner surface of the back piece r the inner surface of the front piece, as the case may be, and in that'manner they are not loosely disposed in the space between the back piece and the front piece. Furthermore, the spac-- ing means permits the easy insertion of the tabs of the: clothing, which act of inserting the tabs between the front piece and the back piece may be accomplished with or without the two pieces being spread or flexed. As can be appreciated from a study of FIGURES 4 and 5, if necessary a gentle squeezing of one side or the other of the doll, as illustrated in FIGURE 4 of the drawings, will open slightly the space between the back piece and the front piece slightly at the other side. In this manner, the spacing means becomesa longitudinal pivot line for the front piece and the back piece.

However, spacing means in the area of the hand portions can be supplied by separate pieces and could be secured to ole or the other, or both, of the hand portions, if desire Turning now to the base or stand of the embodiment shown in FIGURES 4 and 5, and indicated in its entirety as 44, the stand comprises a front portion 45 formed as an integral part of the front piece 41 which flares outwardly and is fiat on the bottom to be supported on any supporting surface. Portion 45 is divided into three parts, 46, 47 and 48, by suitable vertically spaced scorings 5t? and 51, so that the

in a manner similar to the stand 23 described in connection with FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, where necessary or desirable, portions of the stand may be unfolded so that the doll may be laid down without detachment of any of the parts thereof.

Also, in connection with the embodiment of the doll illustrated in FIGURES 4 and 5, it is to be noted that this is an example of a frontand-back type doll, wherein the front of the human form may be depicted on the front of the front piece and the back of the human form may be depicted on the back of the back piece. This arrangement makes it possible to employ articles of clothing and accessories on both the back and front pieces.

From the above description, it can be seen that this embodiment of our doll accomplishes the objectives set forth in connection with the embodiment illustrated in FIG- URES l, 2 and 3., but differs in the manner of holding the tabs of clothing and the like thereon, differs in the form of stand, and may be stronger by reason of the spacing means. Too, little or no instructions for assembling the doll would be required with or without markings for adhesive lines and the like.

Turning now to FIGURES 6, 7 and 8, it can be seen that we have there illustrated another embodiment of our invention, designated in its entirety as 60, having a front piece 61 and a back piece 62, suitably hinged at scoring 63 in a manner similar to the embodiment of FIGURES l, 2 and 3, and held together at the base, indicated in its entirety as 64. It is to be noted that this embodiment is an illustration of the front-and-back type doll, described in connection with FIGURES 4 and 5, and illustrating to advantage the human form depicted on the front and the back pieces to add realism to the doll structure. In this embodiment, however, there is no spacing means nor any flange provided which makes this embodiment dissimilar from the embodiment illustrated in FIG- URES 1 through 3, but nonetheless the natural resiliency of the construction permits ease of putting on and taking off of clothing and accessories. In this embodiment, however, base 64 comprises a stand having a front portion 65, formed integrally with the front piece 61 as a part thereof, and a back piece 66, formed as an integral part of the "back piece 62, and congruent with the front piece. However, both pieces are notched, as illustrated at 67 and 68, to receive a notched stand piece 70. This stand differs from those shown in FIGURES 1 to 5 in that the piece 70 forms a separable part of the stand, and when placed crosswise in the centrally located notches 67, 68, the doll can be made to stand upright, but in order to make the doll simulate sleeping, the separable piece 70 must be detached. As can be appreciated in the description of this embodiment, clothessuch as illustrated in connection with FIGURES 1, 2 and 3, as well as the type of clothes that may be usable in connection with FIGURES 4 and 5, may be utilized in this front-and-back doll.

From the above description of the embodiment illustrated in FIGURES 6, 7 and 8, it can be seen that this embodiment accomplishes many of the features and objectives of the embodiments illustrated in FIGURES 1 through 5, and in addition is very simple to assemble without adhesives, and is realistic as regards the feet of the doll adjacent the supporting structure when the doll stands upright. Furthermore, as can be appreciated, the stand of the embodiment illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 could be replaced by the stand illustrated in FIG- URES 6, 7 and 8 and vice versa, where thought necessary or desirable, since the function of holding the back piece to the front piece is accomplished in both.

Turning now to the embodiment illustrated in FIG- URES 9 through 12, there is illustratedstill another embodiment of our invention, indicated. in its entirety as 80, having a front piece 81 integrally attached to a back piece 82 (FIGURE 10) as by scoring and folding, as at 83, in a manner similar to that illustrated in connection with FIGURES 1 through 8.. There is also provided in this. embodiment still another form of spacing means which comprises a pair of relatively narrow serpentine pieces of paperboard 84, held by and forming a part of the stand, indicated in its entirety as 86, and yet to be described. This embodiment of our invention, being the front-and-back type doll of a type similar to those illustrated in FIGURES 4 through 8, permits the use of articles of clothing of the type illustrated and described in connection with FIGURES 1 through 8. However, with this embodiment, we have illustrated still another form of clothing comprising a front piece 87 and a back piece 83 formed integrally with the front piece 87 at the top and folded about the doll head as at 90. Both the front 87 and back 88 of the garment are provided with a plurality of tabs 91 to be folded and inserted over the edges of the front and back piece in the manner similar to the other article of clothing previously described. In a manner illustrated in connection with the front piece 31 of the doll and 87 of the garment, back 88 will depict the back of the garment and similarly the back piece 82 of the doll may be provided with a means depicting a human form such as illustrated in connection with FIG- URE 8. Obviously, the type of doll clothing as illus trated in connection with these figures could be utilized in connection with the doll of FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 but with greater realism being provided in the embodiments of FIGURES 4 through 10.

Too, it is possible with this embodiment of doll and clothing to make the doll itself of blank paperboard and to depict a form on the clothing including the face 92 and feet 93. This latter type of clothing obviously permits great flexibility including changes of characterization of the dolls, etc.

Turning now to the stand 86, it can be seen that this is divided into three parts, the mid-part 94, and two end parts 95 and 96 (see FIG. 11 which division is accomplished by vertically scoring and slotting, as illustrated at 97'and 98 on the left-hand side of the figure illustrated in FIGURE 9, and at 100 and 10-1 on the right-hand portion of the figure. The back piece 82 is similarly provided'with congruent portions 102, 103 and 104, corresponding respectively to portions 9 95 and 96, divided by scoring and slotting, both being indicated in their ontirety as and 106, respectively, and spaced a distance from the center of the doll equal to the distance between the scorings and

As can be seen from this description, this doll forms a sturdy realistic doll which is assembled without adhesive, and may simulate human activity, such as sleep ing, by the bending of the respective tabs or legs of the stand where necessary or desirable. Obviously, too, while we have described two inserts or spacing means, one or more could be used.

From the above description, it can be seen that this embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 9 through 12 accomplishes the objectives set forth in connection with the previous figures.

Turningnow to FIGS. 13, 14 and 15, we have illustrated still another embodiment of our invention, designated in its entirety as 130 and comprising a front piece 131'and a back piece 132, integrally formed with the front piece 131 by scoring and folding, as at 133, in a manner similar to the previously described FIGURES respectively aflixed to the front and

back pieces

131 and 132, substantially at the breast of the model illustrated and in back-to-back relationship in any suitable manner as by adhesive. There is also provided still another pair portion 158 are angularly disposed as in an inverted V to accomplish a three-dimensional stand.

At the scorings 153 and 1.57 we have also respectively provided pairs of slots (two 160, 162 shown in scoring 153 only) which are spaced apart to receive front tabs 163 and back tabs 164 forming a part of the feet 165 of the doll clothes. With this arrangement of slots and tabs,

of rectangular spacing means 136 and 137, centrally located on the stand 138 in back-to-back relationship and afiixed to the front and back pieces in any suitable manner as by adhesive. With this arrangement, clothes 141) with integral front portions 141 and back portions 142 andwith fronttabs 143 and back tabs 144, may be placed on the doll over the front piece and the back piece in a mannerdescribed in connection with FIGURES 9-42, or clothes may be placed over the front or the back, separately, as described in connection with the previous embodiments. This embodiment, too, is still another typical front-and-back type doll where the back piece 132 may have depicted thereon a back of the human form to add realism to the paper doll structure. As can be seenin FIGURE 14, the tabs 143, 144 are held between the front and back pieces in a manner substantially identical with the clothes tabs described in connection with FIGURESA, 5 and 9 through 12, previously described.

With this embodiment, however, we have also shown an accessory which may be utilized in connection with our invention, as a result of the, improvement accomplished by the provision of a means for holding the tabs as previously explained. This accessory comprises a hat, indicated in its entirety at 145, formed with a front piece 146 and a back piece 147, and may be scored and folded as at 148 and provided with tabs 150, to be folded and inserted between the front pieces and the

back pieces

131 and 132. It is important to note in connection with this accessory that it is held in place in a manner similar to the previously described articles of clothing, and may be placed on the doll directly over the front and back pieces of the doll itself, or may be placed over the article of clothing such as used in connection with FIGS. 9 and 10-where necessary or desirable.

The stand 133 in this embodiment is made integral with the body of the doll and comprises a front portion 152 which flares outwardly, is provided with a flat bottom to be supported on a supporting structure and is scored ,is folded backwardly with respect to the back piece 132 whereby-the front lower portion 154 and the back lower the lower portion of the clothing is conveniently held to prevent movement and tearing of the clothing, as can be appreciated.

This stand 138 is also provided with a new slot and hook means not heretofore described, as a means of afiixing the back piece 131 and the front piece 132 together. As can be seen, front portion is cut as at 166 to form a tab 167 which is inserted in a slot 168 in back portion 156. Similarly, back portion 156 is cut to define a tab 171 which is inserted through a slot 171 formed in the front portion 155 and, for convenience, both tabs 167 and are creased and folded to conform as near as possible to the front and back of the doll.

As thus described, the doll illustrated in FIGURES 13, 14 and 15 is provided with the operative function of the dolls such as described in FIGURES 1 to 3, and 6 through 12, in that they are held together at the top by scoring 133 and at the bottom by an affixing means forming part of the stand. Too, in this embodiment, While realism is diminished somewhat by the height of the feet from the top surface or supporting surface of the stand,

154 and 158 may be easily refolded to their original position in the event that it is desired that these dolls may be made to lie down. This embodiment, however, illustrates the variations that may be used in the various embodiments of our invention as regards the spacing means, and as previously described in connection with the various embodiments, obviously the clothes could be a means of changing the character of the doll by having imprinted thereon a different configuration of the face so hesive. The adhesive is located substantially centrally of the back piece 182 so that the right and left ends thereof may be separated slightly as illustrated in FIGURE 19 to receive the tabs 183 of the clothing 184 in a manner similar to the previously described embodiments. As is obvious, this partial back piece, while forming a front only type doll in many respects performs the same functions as the previously described dolls in that the back piece 182 will grasp and hold the tabs of the clothes, and any number of suchback pieces could be placed throughout the back of the doll as for example at the knees, for additional tabs for the clothes if thought necessary or desirable. This embodiment illustrates how the principle of our invention may be utilized simply and with a minimum of cost.

As to the stand for the embodiment shown in FIGURES 16 through 19, such stand comprises a slotted piece 185 scored midway thereof as at 186 and folded to form a V (as illustrated in the drawing), the legs of which are ment of our invention, indicated in its entirety as 190, and comprising a front piece 191 and a back piece 192. Back piece 192 is formed to have a contour slightly smaller than the contour of front piece 191 to form a flange 193, provided by the difference between the front piece and the back piece, the purpose of which is the same as the flange of the embodiment shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3. In this embodiment, we have provided the back piece 192 separate from the front piece 191 and centrally slotted with a T-shaped slot 194 near the shoulder blades of the doll in which is received a flanged elongated tab 195 formed as an integral part of the front piece 191 scored and folded as at 196 over the back piece and interlocked within the slot 194 to hold the upper portions of the doll together. In assembly, with the two pieces being separate, the tab 195 may be inserted in the slot 194 and locked in the slot by the flanges or edges 197 on the head of the tab as illustrated. In this embodiment, any of the stands previously described may be utilized to lock the back piece and the front piece together at the base so that the two pieces may perform the function of gripping the clothing tabs as previously described. One important feature of the present embodiment is that the two

191 and 192 have the benefits of the integral pieces as previously described, such as for example in FIGURES 1 2 and 3, and the head of the tab 195 performs still another function of spacing the front piece and back piece apart to obtain the function of the spacing means such as described in connection with FIGURES 9 through 14. As more clearly illustrated in FIGURE 22, the tab 195 is actually between the front piece and the back piece and while we have illustrated this attaching means in connection with a flanged doll, the flange is obviously not necessary to the function of this embodiment.

Turning now to FIGURES 23 and 24, there is illustrated still another embodiment of our invention comprising a doll, indicated in its entirety as 200 having a front piece 201 and a back piece 202. Back piece 202 of this embodiment is made larger so that there is provided a flange 203 provided by the difference between the size of the front piece and the back piece. This flange accomplishes the same purpose as the flange illustrated in connection with FIGURES l, 2 and 3, as well as FIGURES 20, 21, and 22, except that the flange is reversed. It can be appreciated that since the function accomplished is the same, the flange, illustrated in the previously identified embodiments, may also be reversed.

In this embodiment we have provided still another means of attaching the front piece and back piece together and this comprises, as more clearly illustrated in FIGURE 24,, a pair of

Turning now to FIGURES 26 and 27, there is illustrated therein a doll 250 having a front piece 251 and a back piece 252 in spaced relationship as illustrated in FIGURE 27. Doll 250' is preferably made of two separate pieces, unattached at the respective extreme top and bottom similar to the embodiment illustrated in FIGURES 4 and 5. The back piece 252 is provided with one U-shaped slot 253 at the top of the figure midway of the shoulders and a second U-shaped slot 254 near the lower portion of the body to form a

255 and 256 are each scored, as at 257 and 258, to divide each of the tabs into two parts, one of which is affixed to the back of the front piece by any suitable manner such as adhesive. It is to be noted that the portion of tab 255 affixed to the front piece 251 is the lower portion of the tab whereas the fixed portion in the tab 256 is in the upper portion thereof (see FIG. 27) so that the two tabs actually work against each other to tend to resiliently hold the front piece 251 and the back piece 252 together.

This means of aflixing the front piece and the back piece aids these pieces in accomplishing the function of the previously described front and back pieces without necessari'ly locking the top or the'bottom of the dolls together, and the tabs may be. affixed in the manner shown and described .either in the factory or with simple instructions with or without the adhesive being actually afiixed to the back of .the front piece.

In :the embodiment shown in FIGURES 2'6 and 27, we have conveniently shown still. another formof stand which is much more simple, yet just as effective .a stand for this purpose as-those previously described where no locking of the front piece and the back piece is required. This stand, illustrated in its entirety as 260, comprises two triangular leg pieces 261 and262 cut from the back piece 252 and scored as .at '263 and 264 so that the tabs triangulate a three-.dimensionalstand capable of support ing: thedeviceinvan. upright. position. This stand can be refolded'ito itsorigirla'lposition to permit the dollto lie down realistically.

Turning nowtothe embodiment illustrated in FIG- URES 28 and .29, there isshown a doll designatedin its entirety as 280, having -.a front piece '281'1and a back piece 282 ofidentical configuration and provided with a spacing means therebetween, indicated in its entirety at 283. In the embodiment illustrated, this spacing means includes a spacing strip 284 substantially longitudinally inserted therebetween, similar to the spacing means illustratedin connection with FIGURES 9 through 12, except that this spacing means 283 does not form a part of a stand. The spacing strip preferably is midway between the edges of the doll so that there is adequate space on either side of it for clothing tabs. Spacing means 283 of this embodiment, however, does form a part of the means :to hold the back piece and. the front piece together. To accomplish this function, strip 284 is suitably afiixed to the back of the front piece throughout most of the length of the strip and conveniently scored and bent or folded so as to be received in a slot means 286. Slot means 286 in this embodiment is located at the breast portion of the doll and is formed of a relatively small rectangular piece of paperboard, secured at each end to the front of the back piece in any suitable manner, as by adhesive, such ends being spaced to receive the strip 284 therebetween.

At the lower end of the doll, the back portion of the front piece 281 is provided with a T-shaped insert having a top or tongue portion 287 and a base 288. The base 288 is suitably aflixed as by adhesive to the base of the doll with its bottom edge in alignment with the bottom edge'of the doll and the tongue 287 is free of the back piece, to be inserted in a slot means 290 afiixed to the front of the back piece. Slot means 290 is substantially identical with the slot means 286 and is adapted to receive the tongue 287 in a manner similar to the free portion of the spacer means 284. Thus, by the use of the two spacing means 284 and 287, the front piece 281 and the back piece 282 are locked together and the spacing means perform the function heretofore described in connection with the previous figures. From this description it can be appreciated that this embodiment is particularly characterized by being readily detachable since the removal of the front piece and the back piece from each other is accomplished by merely sliding one relative to the other longitudinally (upward and downward in the drawings) so that the respective spacing means will be received in or removed from the slot means described.

The stand, indicated in its entirety as 291, for the doll, as illustrated in FIGURES 28 and 29, is formed as an integral portion of the doll and comprises a front portion 292 flared and provided with a fiat bottom adapted to be set on a supporting structure and suitably scored vertically as at 293 and 294 to divide the stand into three parts, 295, 296, and 297.

In connection with this embodiment, however, the stand could be replaced by any of the previously described stands where thought necessary or desirable, with the locking together of the two front and back pieces being accomplished by the spacing means and any one of.

FIGURE 31 is a simplified version of a stand adapted to be used where the front piece and back piece of a doll are fixed together as by adhesive, as for example in connection with FIGS. 4 and 5, with or without a spacing means therebetween. The stand illustrated in FIG. 31 comprises a portion 326 forming part of a front piece 321 flared outwardly and provided with a flat bottom edge in a manner described in connection with the previous embodiment. Back piece 323 is scored horizontally at 324 to provide a relatively long rectangular piece 325, the bottom edge 326 of which meets the supporting structure on which the stand may be placed, spaced apart from the bottom edge of the front piece 320 to provide a leg for the three-dimensional stand. This stand accomplishes the function provided by the previously described stand, yet is simple and inexpensive, as can be appreciated.

Turning now tothe embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 32 and 33 it can be seen that there is illustrated the lower portion of a doll, indicated in its entirety as 340, having a front piece 341 and a back piece 342 spaced apart by a serpentine elongated spacing means 343, comprising one form a substantial base for the doll and may be of the same contour as the front piece and back piece thereof,

" inarnanner :similar tothe embodiment of'the stand i1-' or more strips of paperboard inserted therebetween and attached to the back piece or the front piece in any suitable manner, as by adhesive. The front piece 341 and the back piece 342 can be held together in any suitable manner as by scoring and folding at the top as illustrated in the previous descriptions, or by the interlocking means illustrated in connection with FIGS. 23 and 24, or where necessary or desirable, the interlocking means described in connection with FIGS. 28 and 29. However, in this embodiment, we have illustrated still another form of stand indicated in its entirety at 345, which comprises a front portion 346 outwardly flared and provided with a fiat bottom adapted to be set on a supporting structure, horizontally scored and notched at a slight distance from the bottom as at 347 and 348, and cut and scored to provide a triangular tab 350 at the edge at which the score line 347 terminates. The back piece 342 is provided with a back stand portion 351 congruent with the front portion 346 and scored, cut and folded in a manner similar to the front portion 346 but transposed, whereby its scoring and slots may be received in the respective slots and scorings of the front portion to interlock the two pieces together. 'and triangulartab 354 of back piece 342 and triangular illustrated in its entirety as 360, comprising a front piece 361 and a back piece 362 integrally hinged vertically as illustrated as 363, so, that the'front piece and the back .piece may be. folded about their joining hinge 363 to clothe the previously described dolls. This is an illus- 17 tration of the type or" article of clothing which could be utilized as a one-piece article of clothing for the backand-front dolls, as well as other types of dolls in certain instances.

FIGURES 35 and 36 represent a means of changing the character of the doll as by a masked face J76, illustrated in connection with FIG. 35 with a front piece 371 and a back piece 372, and tabs 373, suitably hinged at its mid-portion, and adaptable for use particularly in connection with those embodiments of dolls which are hinged at their top. Similarly, in EEG. 36, it can be seen that our doll can be adapted to change its characteristics by the simple expedient of providing suitable printing of a face and perhaps partial forefront, as at 374, with tabs 375. This feature of changin the character of the doll was heretofore not too successful because of the number of tabs required and because they were easily knocked loose and would not remain on the doll for the reasons previously referred to. It will be apparent that the front-andback head 376 and the front-only head and chest 374 are, in structure, manner of attachment, and general effect of changing the doll appearance, the same as the front-andback and front-only garments heretofore described, and hence may be regarded as included in the expressions clothing or article of clothing as used herein.

FIGURE 37 illustrates the doll shown in FIGURES 6 to 8 and shows to advantage how the doll can be printed as one integral part either on one sheet of paperboard as illustrated in FIG. 37, or where necessary or desirable, with the scoring 13 located conveniently, printed on the front and the back of a cutout book of the type currently available commercially.

Thus from the above description of the preferred embodiments of our invention, it can be appreciated that we have accomplished the general and specific objects of our invention and While we have disclosed the dolls depicting human figures, obviously, the principle of our invention can be utilized on animal forms, for example, a saddle or harness may be firmly held on a horse. Furthermore, use of the wording paper doll, cardboard doll and paper doll clothing or paperboard is solely for convience and is not intended to limit the doll and doll clothing structures to paper, paperboard, or cardboard. The doll and clothing could be made of other suitable materials such, for example, as a doll made of plastic, wood, metal, in substantially sheet form, and clothing made of cloth, metal foil, plastic and the like. Accordingly, unless the context clearly requires the contrary, use of the terms paper doll and paper doll clothing is to be construed to include alternate materials which are suitable for the purpose.

Where herein the various parts of our invention have been referred to as located in a right or left or an upper or lower or an inward or outward position, it will be understood that this is done solely for the purpose of facilitating description and that such references relate only to the relative positions of the parts as shown in the drawings.

Also, it is to be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention and the invention is defined and comprehended solely by the appended claims which should be construed as broadly as the prior art will permit.

We claim:

1. In combination, means defining a paper doll, including a front piece and a back piece secured together with the marginal portions thereof free of each other along the length of the two sides of the periphery of the doll for receiving therebetween a clothing supporting tab for secure support of clothing and the like on the doll, and an article of clothing having at least one tab thereon, each said tab being folded over the edge of said doll and inserted in said peripheral portion between said free mar- 18 ginal portions of said pieces to be retained by engagement therewith. v

2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein the the article of clothing comprises a front part and a back part hingedly connected along an edge portion to receive the doll therebetween, each of said parts having at least one tab at another edge portionthereof foldable over an edge of the respective doll piece covered by the clothing part and between said free marginal portions for retention thereby, said hinged connection and tabs securing the clothing article on the doll in relation tending to' restrain bowing of the front and back pieces of the doll away from each other.

3. A paper doll comprising means defining a front piece and means defining a back piece, said front and back pieces being permanently secured together and arranged 'with the marginal portions thereof free of each other along at least a portion of the periphery of the doll for receiving therebetween retention elements of doll clothes to firmly support said clothes on said doll, the extent of said peripheral portion being appreciably greater than the corresponding dimension of the retention means.

4. For use in connection with paper doll clothing which is adapted to overlie a paper doll body and to be supported thereon by bendable tabs on the periphery of the doll clothing, a paper doll comprising a body portion, retaining means for holding the bendable tabs in clothes supporting position with respect to said body portion, and means for associating the retaining means with said body portion, said retaining means comprising a back piece with its marginal portions free of the body portion along the length of at least one side of the periphery of the doll for retaining reception of tabs.

5. The paper doll claimed in claim 4, wherein said body portion and back piece are detachably secured together.

6. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said back piece is congruent with said body portion.

7. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said associating means comprises hinge means connecting the top portion of said retaining means to said body portion and means connecting the bottom portion of said retaining means to the base of said doll.

8. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said associating means comprises means connecting the sideportions of said retaining means to the side edges of body portion and means connecting the bottom portion of said retaining means to the base of said doll.

9. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said associating means comprises hinge means integral with said body portion and said retaining means and disposed at the top of said doll and means connecting the bottom of said retaining means with the base of said doll.

10. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said associating means comprises means spacing the retaining means from the back of said body portion.

11. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 wherein said associating means comprises means spacing the retaining means from the back of said body portion and means connecting the spacing means and retaining means at the base of said doll. I

12. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 further including means for permitting easy insertion of the tabs in the retaining means.

13. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 further including means for permitting easy insertion of the tabs in the retaining means comprising a flange defined by the retaining means and the body portion.

14. The paper doll claimed in claim 4 further including means for permitting easy insertion of the tabs in the retaining means comprising means facilitating flexing separation of the edges of the retaining means and body portion.

15. A doll including means defining a paperboard front piece, means defining a paperboard back piece and arranged with the marginal portion thereof free of the front piece along the length of two sides of the periphery of the doll to permit tabs on doll clothing to be inserted between the front piece and the back piece and for frictionally holding clothing in operative position on said doll, and means associating said back piece with said front piece.

16. A doll as claimed in claim 15, wherein the back piece is substantially the same configuration as the front piece but of smaller size throughout at least a considerable portion of the extent thereof.

17. A doll as claimed in claim wherein said back piece covers less than the entire back of said front piece.

18. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said back piece is of substantially the same size and shape as the front piece.

19. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said back piece is an integral part of the front piece.

20. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said associating means comprises a hinge connecting the top of said front piece and the top of said back piece.

21. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said associating means comprises a hinge connecting the tops of the respective front and back pieces and means connecting the bases of the respective front and back pieces.

22. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said associating means includes a hinge connecting the tops of the respective front and back pieces and also includes means defining a stand for the doll.

23. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said associating means spaces said back piece and said front piece to permit ready insertion of the tabs therebetween.

24. A doll substantially as defined in claim 23, where in the associating means is permanently secured between and to the front piece and back piece.

25. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein said associating means includes means for permitting the distance between the back piece and front piece to be varied for easy insertion of the tabs therebetween.

26. A doll as claimed in claim 15 wherein the back piece has on its back side a representation of the back of a figure whereby a front-and-back doll is provided.

27. A doll including means defining a paperboard front piece, means defining a paperboard back piece and arranged with the marginal portion thereof free of the front piece along the length of two sides of the periphery of the doll to permit tabs on doll clothing to be inserted between the front piece and the back piece and for frictionally holding clothing in operative position on said doll, means associating said back piece with said front piece, and means defining a stand for standing the doll in an upright position.

28. A doll as claimed in claim 27 wherein said stand forms part of said associating means.

29. A doll as claimed in claim 27 wherein said stand, back piece, and front piece are one integral paperboard piece.

30. A doll as claimedin claim 27 further including means spacing the front piece and the back piece from each other.

31. A doll as claimed in claim 30 wherein said spacing means forms part of said stand.

32. A doll as claimed in claim 30 wherein said spacing means forms part of said associating means.

33. A doll as claimed in claim 30 wherein said spacing means and stand form part of said associating means.

34. A doll as claimed in claim 30 wherein said stand, back piece, and front piece are one integral paperboard piece. I

35. In a doll having means defining a form the edge of which are adapted to have the tabs of articles of clothing folded thereabout to support said articles on said form, retaining means for frictionally holding said tabs on said form comprising a back piece secured to the back of the form and defining therewith a marginal recess along the length of two sides of the form periphery for retainingly receiving folded tabs, and means for standing said form vertically on a supporting surface.

36. A doll as claimed in claim 35, including spacing means disposed between said form and retaining means and interengaged with the lower portions thereof.

37. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said retaining means includes means for concealing said tabs to add realism to said doll and clothes.

38. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically includes means to affix said retaining means to said form.

39. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically is an integral part of said form and said retaining means.

40. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically includes means on said retaining means interlocking with said form.

41. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically includes legs on said retaining means and legs on said form.

42. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically includes at least one leg on said retaining means which cooperates with the base of said form.

43. The doll as claimed in claim 35 wherein said means for standing said form vertically includes legs on said retaining means and legs on said form, said legs on said retaining means being folded and interlocked with the legs on said form.

44. A doll as claimed in claim 43, which includes spacing means extending between said form and retaining means, said spacing means having legs interlocked with the legs on the retaining means and on the form.

45. For use in connection with paper doll clothing which is adapted to overlie a paper doll body and to be supported thereon by bendable tabs on the periphery of the doll clothing, a paper doll body comprising a front piece, a back piece secured thereto, and a smaller sized insert disposed between the front and back pieces, the marginal portions of the front and back pieces being free of each other along at least one side of the periphery of the doll body for receiving therebetween a clothing supporting tab for secure support of clothing on the doll body, and said insert spacing said front piece from the back piece and having its edges disposed short of said free marginal edges of the front piece and the back piece to permit easy insertion of the tab between said free marginal portions of the front and back pieces.

Claims

3. A PAPER DOLL COMPRISING MEANS DEFINING A FRONT PIECE AND MEANS DEFINING A BACK PIECE, SAID FRONT AND BACK PIECES BEING PERMANENTLY SECURED TOGETHER AND ARRANGED WITH THE MARGINAL PORTIONS THEREOF FREE OF EACH OTHER ALONG AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE PERIPHERY OF THE DOLL FOR RECEIVING THEREBETWEEN RETENTION ELEMENTS OF DOLL CLOTHES TO FIRMLY SUPPORT SAID CLOTHES ON SAID DOLL, THE EXTENT OF SAID PERIPHERAL PORTION BEING APPRECIABLY GREATER THAN THE CORRESPONDING DIMENSION OF THE RETENTION MEANS.
