y 1940- H. CLOUDSLEY HANDKERCHIEF DISPLAY PACKAGE 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed April 12. 1939 Imelda;- Mh'alseabml'lauakleg July 2, 1940- H. CLOUDSLEY HANDKERCHIEF DISPLAY PACKAGE Filed April 12, 1959 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 .Eilamey I Patented July 2, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFHCE HANDKEROHIEF DISPLAY PACKAGE 41 2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to display packages and more particularly to display packages for womens handkerchiefs.
The object of the invention is to provide a 55 package for displaying womens handkerchiefs in a novel, ornamental and attractive manner, and in particular, to combine a handkerchief or handkerchiefs with a display card or package in such a manner that the handkerchief will appear to form a dress or garment for the figure of an attractive girl depicted on the card or package.
In accordance with one present and illustrative form of the invention, the package comprises 215 two panels of cardboard or the like, connected at the top and bottom, and providing a handkerchief space between them. On the face of the front panel is drawn the figure of a girl. A handkerchief is arranged over this figure in such a manner as to simulate a dress or garment, and is secured in position by tucking a part of it through a slit cut in the panel across the figure.
For instance, in the illustrative embodiment of the invention, this slit is cut across the breast of the figure at the upper line of an evening dress, and a womans handkerchief, which is folded and draped so as to simulate the dress, is tucked through this slit, so as to hold the handkerchief in place, and also to form a well-demarked upper dress line. The handkerchief is then drawn in at the waist of the figure by means of a narrow ribbon which passes through the panel through slits at sides of the figure. The package also has provision for additional .handkerchiefs, the major portions of which are contained in the space between the front and rear panels of the package, but portions of these additional handkerchiefs are projected through slits in the front panel of the package and are arranged to form an attractive ornamental design above or in association with the handker chief-garbed figure.
The handkerchief package provided by the invention is highly ornamental, as well as simple in construction, and the attractiveness of the article greatly increases the sale of womens handkerchiefs.
The invention will be best understood from the following detailed description of a present preferred embodiment thereof, in Which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a display package in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a back View of the device, the rear 5 panel, however, being largely broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the broken line 3-3 'of Fig. 2.
The display package, in the preferred and present illustrative embodiment, embodies front and rear panels l0 and l l, formed of cardboard or the {5 like. As here shown, these panels are connected at the top (see Fig. 3), being formed of one length of cardboard bent double at approximately the middle. The two panels so formed are provided with means or arrangements where- :10 by they may be detachably secured together at the bottom. For instance, as shown in the drawings, front panel I0 is formed with slits l2 adapted toreceive tabs [3 formed on the bottom edge of rear panel H, slits 12 being formed in 5 line with the lower edge of rear panel I l, and the downwardly extending tabs l3 being projected through said slits in the manner clearly illustrated,
The figure M of a girl is depicted on the front 20 side of front panel I0, and this may be done either by drawing, printing, photography, or any other process found suitable. The attractiveness of the article is materially enhanced if the figure I4 is done in natural colors. A ladys handker- 25 chief I5 is folded and draped in such a way as to serve as a dress for the figure. The figure of the girl is, in Fig. 1, shown in dotted lines where it is hidden by the handkerchief or dress IE; it will be understood, however, that the figure is so completely done in full lines, and is drawn or depicted as wearing, beneath dress l5, a bathing suit or other garment, the lower line of which is indicated at It.
A portion of the handkerchief I5 is tucked 35 through a slit I8 cut across the figure. In the preferred and illustrative form of the invention, this slit I8 is cut across the breast of the figure at the upper line of a modern evening dress, in the manner illustrated. The handkerchief may 40 be folded in various ways; that indicated is simple and effective. It consists simply infolding the upper half of the handkerchief downwardly on the lower half, thereby forming double lower edges I5a and double side edges E519 and 150, and then taking the double side edges l5b and 150 and bringing them together at the center. The handkerchief is then gathered together at the top and the upper portion 20 thereof inserted through slit I8.
The handkerchief or dress is gathered in at the waist of the figure by means of a narrow ribbon 24, this ribbon passing through slits 25 at the sides of the figure at the waist line of the dress and thence rearwardly 0f the figure on the rearward side of front panel In (see Fig. 2). This ribbon is tied at the front of the figure, forming an ornamental bow 27, the ribbon being drawn tightly enough to draw the handkerchief in and form the dress with a proper waist line. The handkerchief below this ribbon 24 flares out and covers the figure in the manner of a dress. As here shown, one corner of the handkerchief may be lifted and inserted in a slit 28 formed between the thumb and finger of the hand of the figure.
In the form of the invention as here shown, the package also serves to contain two additional handkerchiefs, which are indicated by the numeral 30. These handkerchiefs 312 are folded, preferably, in an ordinary rectangular manner, and are placed between the upper portions of front and rear panels In and H, one beside the other, with their four corner portions 3| adjacent panel 10 and projecting through diagonal slits 34 in the latter, slits 34 being arranged over the figure M in the manner clearly illustrated. The corner portions 3| of these two additional handkerchiefs, which may be of different colors, and of colors different from the handkerchief used to form dress I5, form an attractive ornamental design above the figure l4. Supplemente ing this handkerchief design are any suitable ornamental line designs such as indicated at 35 and 36.
The package as a whole is very attractive in appearance, forms a simple and inexpensive but convenient display for ladies handkerchiefs, and the novelty and unique character of the package are such that the article has great sales appeal.
It will of course be understood that while I have shown one particular embodiment of my invention, various changes, rearrangements or additions may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A handkerchief package comprising a panel, a figure of a girl depicted on the face of said panel, a slit in said panel across said figure just above the bust of the figure, a handkerchief draped over said figure in simulation of a dress and having only a small portion thereof tucked through said slit, and a ribbon extending across said figure and handkerchief at the waist line, said panel having slits at the sides of said figure at the waist line through which said ribbon passes to the rear of the panel, said ribbon drawing said handkerchief in at the waist line of said figure and forming said handkerchief into a puff between said ribbon and said first named slit so as to simulate a natural bust contour, and the remainder of said handkerchief being draped in loose folds falling freely from said ribbon and extending downwardly of and entirely in front of said figure to form the skirt for the figure.
2. A handkerchief package comprising a panel,
'a figure of a girl depicted on the face of said panel, a slit in said panel across said figure just above the bust of the figure, a handkerchief draped over said figure in simulation of a dress and having only a small portion thereof tucked through said slit, a ribbon secured to the panel and protruding from opposite sides of the waist line of the figure, said ribbon passing over said handkerchief and drawing said handkerchief in at the waist line of said figure and binding said handkerchief to the face of the panel, said handkerchief being formed into a puff between said ribbon and said first named slit so as to simulate a natural bust contour and the remainder of said handkerchief being draped in loose folds falling freely from said ribbon and extending downwardly of and entirely in front of said figure to form the skirt for the figure.
