JOHN 3'. RYAN AND JOHN GAFFNEY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO NATIONAL FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEVT HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A. CORPORA- TION OF NEW JERSEY.
DISPLAY CARTON.
Application filed. April 17, 1925.
Our present invention relates to an advertising and display carton formed from cardboard or like material and to a blank from which such a carton is formed.
The invention relates more expressly to a carton or pasteboard box for advertising purposes which may when desired be used for holding articles that are to be advertised or that are to be sold and which has formed as a part thereof a plate or extension having a surface that may be held in position for advantageous display and advertising. All of the exposed surfaces of the carton are used for carrying printed matter or the like for advertising purposes and means are provided for tilting the carton to a suitable angle to display the top of the box to the best advantage. Preferably the extension simulates a cover and is provided with means for holding it as in an open position upstanding with respect to the upper surface of the carton. In such cases the printed display on said top surface of the carton may resemble one or a plurality of articles which the box is advertising so that the finished carton has the appearance of an open box containing the articles advertised.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of this application,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing what appears to be an open box with printed matter on the inside surfaces of the cover, and printed matter on the actual upper surface of the carton simulating articles which the carton is supposed to contain, and extensions on the end members of the carton which serve to hold the box tilted upwardly toward the back. This being a perspective View but one of the supporting members is shown.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the developed blank from which the carton is formed.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing the top surface 1 of the carton has printed thereon a simulation of smaller cartons 2, 2 and presents the appearance of a lurality of such smaller cartons 2, 2 as being assembled in ordered arrangement within the main carton. Extending upwardly from the back of the box and preferably formed continuous with said top surface 1 is the flap 3 which in Fig. 1 is held at such a position and is of such asize as to simulate a cover for said main carton. On said flap 8 is printed adver- Serial No. 23,748.
tising matter of desired character. In this preferred embodiment of my invention there 18 formed along the upper edge of the back member 4-, of the box a tab 5 which extends substantially the length of the flap 3 and is fastened thereto by gluing or clipping and serves to stiffen and hold flap 8 in the desired position. The front surface 6 of the carton is also used to carry advertising characters. At the bottom edge of each of the end members 7, 7 of the carton, only one which appears in the perspective View of Fig. 1, is formed a downward extension 8 which has a greater width at the back than at the front and which in this form serves to hold the carton tilted upwardly from the back whereby the top surface 1 of the :arton is more fully exposed {and more readily seen.
In Fig. 2 is shown a development of the blank from which the carton of the preferred embodiment of our invention in Fig. 1 is formed. In this figure is shown the top member 1 connected to the bottom memher 9 by a front portion 6, 6 and a flap extension 3 formed on the back edge of said top portion 1. substantially the same length and width as the said top portion. From the back edge of the bottom portion 9 extends a back portion 10 which carries at its outer edge a tab 5 which extends substantially the length thereof and is of appreciable width itself. At the ends thereof said bottom p0rtion 9 carries end portions 12, 12 having flaps 13, 13 thereof for folding into the box and holding the end portions 12, 12 in place. At its ends the top portion 1 carries end portions 11, 14 having the end flap portions 15, 15 for folding into the box and holding the respective end portions 1 1, 1 1- in place and also carrying at their lower edges extensions 8, 8 which have a greater width at the back thereof than at the front. These latter extensions serve as shown in the description of Fig. 1 to support the finished carton in the tilted position. Said flap extension 3 on the top portion 1 serves in the finished carton to simulate a cover for the box which is in the open position, and said tab 5 on the upper edge of the back portion serves as above described to support said flap extension in the simulated open position of the simulated cover.
This flap extension 3 is of It is to be understood that various modifications of our invention as shown, described, and hereinafter claimed may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
lVe claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a carton blank having a bottom section, a top section, a front section intermediate and unitary with bottom and top sections, aback section, end sections at each end of the bottom section, tabs formed on the edges of said end section opposite said bottom section for folding into the carton, an end section at each end of said top section having tabs thereon for folding into the carton and an extension which projects further from said end section at given points than at other points and a tab formed as a backward extension of said top section, said top being printed to simulate articles in the carton and said tab being printed with an advertising display.
2. As an article of manufacture, a carton blank having a bottom section, a top section, a front section intermediate and unitary with said bottom and top sect-ions, a back section, end sections at each end of bottom section, tabs formed on the edges of said end section opposite said bottom section for folding into the carton, an end section at each end of said top section having tabs thereon for folding into the carton and each having an extension having a greater width at the back edge thereof than at the front edge and a tab formed as a backward extension of said top section, said top being printed to simulate articles in the carton and said tab being; printed with an advertising display.
As an article of manufacture, a carton blank having a bottom section, a to section, a front section intermediate and nnitary with said bottom and top sections, a back section, a longitundinal tab thereon, end sections at each end of bottom section, tabs formed on the edges of said end section opposite said bottom section for folding into the carton, an end section at each end of said top section having; tabs thereon for folding into the carton and an extension which projects farther from said end section at given points than at other points, and a. tab formed as a backward extension of said top section said top being printed to simulate articles in the carton and said tab being printed with an advertising dis play. i
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands.
