Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS C. TUCKER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO CALIFORNIA ALMOND GROWERSYEXCHAN GE, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
Application led August 81, 1920.
cles that' it isv desired to display, as well as advertise, and through the agency ofa sign shaped in theforin of a person and appro? priately photo-lithographed to carryout the representation conveying the impression that the intangible person portrayed on the signv is holding a container of visible articles.
An object of this invention is to provide an advertising display in theform ot a life like portrayal of a living object that can be efiiciently through the present advanced meansV by photo-lithography as a commercial substitute for attractive hand-colored displays.
A further object is to provide a collapsi-V ble container foldable according to. the present well-known methods and provided with additional means thereonk wherebyl advertising indicia may be detachably securedv thereto. Other objects and advantages will appear as this description progresses.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying one-sheet of drawings,
Figure 1 represents an elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the container blank and the means for holding the same in the assembled position.
Fig. l represents the plan view of the advertising sign blank. Y
In detail the construction illustrated in the drawings, includes an advertising dis- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

play medium generally designated by the numeral 1 and consisting of a sign member 2 and container portion 3 secured thereto in an appropriate manner. The display sign 2 and container 3 are. preferably formed from pliable cardboard, thin wood, metal or other desirable composition-the blank sheets of the-desired material being stamped, cut or otherwise finished to the desired contour` or profile. Thus the container 3 in the blank form is provided with the necessary slitted corners, creases and openings for foldingv the same into assembled position as a box-like container. The display sign 2 is likewise shaped into a contour representing the silhouette of a photo-lithographie portrayal of a person printed thereon and is provided with suitable means whereby the same lmay be secured'to the container 3 or quickly detached therefrom. Although it is the object of my invention that the advertising sign 2 shall vbe provided with means adapted tov engage predetermined openings provided in the container, I do not wish to confine myself solely to this fastening means inasmuch as other appropriate devices could be made to subserve the same purpose.
By referenceto Fig. 3, it will be noted that the container blank is substantially rectangular in form having the longitudinal crease lines 5 and 6 and the lateral crease lines 7 and 8 passing transversely thereto, dividing the sheet into the front wall 9, rear wall 10 and the end members 11 and 12 respectively. The corner segments 13, 14, 15 and 16 are provided with appropriately shaped portions that are adapted to be inserted through the slitted openings provided in the side and end members ot the container blank. The box is assembled into its cubical form by bending the rear wall 10 into the vertical position relative to the base member L1, in which position the end members 11 and 12 respectively are raised so that the tabs 14 and 15 respectively on the end members 11 and 12 engage suitable openings or slits 10 provided in the rear wall 10.r The front section 9 is then bent upwardly and its engaging tabs 13 and 16 moved into engagement with the slits 12 and 11 respectively provided in the end members 12 and 11, thus finishing the assembling of the box. i The rear sign member 2 is provided with cutout portions 20 and 2,1 adapted to be positioned between the corner tab sections 14 and l5 and the outer face of the `rear member 10, in which position thetab 22 eX- tends downwardly on the outside of the basketfso as to be placed in substantially the same plane as the bottom 4.
It is desirable that the person portrayed on the display sign 2 have the arms of the body disposed s0 that one hand thereof will overlap the upper edge of the rear Wall 10 and by carefully slitting around the same, the linger portion thereof can be depressed in the form of a tab adapted to extend Vover the upper edge of the box 3 as if the same Were grasped thereby. To convey a more realistic meaning, the opposite hand is positioned on the display portion thereof so that a slot 23 provided substantially therethrough receives the handle member 24, de-
tachably mounted therein, with the opposite end thereof extending over the open face of the container insa graceful parabola with the end passing through slotted openings 25.`
provided in the front wall 9. Conveying the effect that the person represented on the vertically positioned advertising sign, by means of the hand 26 overlying the rear Wall of the -container l0 and the hand 27 placed contiguous to the handle 24, is holding the container 2 and oering the articles contained therein t0 an interested observer.
Although the ligure of a small girl is represented on the advertising sign, it would be clearly Within the purview of this invention to substitute some other person or ob-lV ject; to mount the same upon a container diiferently formed from the one shown and described or secure the same thereto Vin a dierent'mann'er than that described and I therefore do not Want to limit myself specically to the particular Vconstruction illustrated. v Y. X
vHaving thus described this invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. An advertising display consisting of a sign with the contour thereof in the'form of'an animate object and appropriately decorated to represent the same; Va container detachably secured to said sign; a handle onV 3. An advertisingdisplay consisting of a Y sign; a collapsible container Y provided with suitable fastening means for securing saidV sign' thereto and supporting the same in the vertical position and a handle onksaid container detachably secured to said sign.
4. An advertising display consisting-0f a sign; a container comprising a rectangular blank of material adapted to be appropri-V ately creased'and folded and detachably secured to said sign, and a handle adapted to be secured to an edge of said container and to said sign. i l
In testimony whereof, Ihave hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 21st day of August, 1920.
` Y THADDEUS C. TUCKER. In presence of l JOHN A. DIGoAN,
LINooLN V. JOHNSON.
