BASE OR SUPPORT FOR DOLLS OR THE LIKE Fil ad July 6, 1938 V INVENTORY Zanzzrzd- 2 wmmfl,
ATTORNEY.
' of stock 4.
Patented Dec. 13, 1938 UNITE STATES ATENT OFFiE BASE OR SUPPORT LIK FQR DOLLS OR THE 6 Claims.
My invention pertains to an improvement in figure toys or the like and the main object of my invention is to provide a base or support for a figure, toy paper doll or the like which is so adapted as to be formed together with the figure from a single piece of stock.
It is another object of my invention to provide a support of an improved type whereby a toy consisting of a doll or the: like may be placed in an upright position and may be maintained there by manipulation of the various devices as will hereinafter be more fully described.
It is another object of my invention to provide an improved supporting device which may be formed from a blank of a rather hard or stilf and yet pliable paper or other material of suitable thickness so as to provide strength, rigidity and durability. As stated, the device is made from one piece of stock so that all parts are integral with each other and there are no parts to be attached, wherefore the device is not only simple and unique in form but economical in its construction and manufacture.
Various other objects and novel features of my invention will be hereinafter more fully referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. l is a plan view of the device of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support as produced from the device shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an elevational sectional view through the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Similar reference figures refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the figure illustrated is a toy doll although it will be understood that any desired figure or object may be produced thereon all to the same effect.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail the invention will be more fully described.
A doll or the like is shown at 4 and is comprised of the uppermost portion of a blank piece The base or bottom member which is in fact the lower portion of the same stock 4 is indicated by E and it has at either of its ends tabs 8 which are foldable upon the bottom along scored lines iii as provided therefor to facilitate relative hinging.
An intermediate base member l2 likewise of the same piece of stock is connected to the lower portion of the doll member 4 and a side of the bottom base member 6. There are scored lines It on either side of the intermediate member, so
that both the doll portion 2 and the base portion 6 are foldable relative thereto.
Upon the doll portion 4 and in the lowermost corners thereof there are provided two inwardly diverging slots It being open at their outer ends at the corners of the doll figure. These slots are so constructed and adapted as to receive other portions of the stock in a manner as will hereinafter appear. 1
Various parts of the invention now having been described and it being observed that all of the various parts are integral with each other as shown in Fig. 1 the device can now be arranged into its assembled form. To set up the device, the doll portion of the device is taken in hand and the intermediate portion is folded forwardly along the scored line id which separates the doll portion and the intermediate portion and it is brought upwardly to the plane of the doll. The bottom base member is then folded rearwardly along the scored line M which separates the intermediate portion and the bottom base member of the device and the bottom member is thereby doubled upon the intermediate member. The tabs 3 are then folded rearwardly relative to the base member along the scored lines Hi.
These tab portions are insertable in the slots 16 so adapted as to receive and engage such tab portions in a manner as shown in Fig. 2 and as the slots engage the tabs, the base is swung into position. The base member 6 and its complementary intermediate member l2 are now in a normal uniplanar position perpendicular to the plane of the doll member 4 and the tab members at an angle in relation to both the doll member and the base and intermediate member.
Such angle obviously may be determined by the degree of slope of the inwardly diverging slots IS.
The base, as it lies in a horizontal plane, when so assembled is thus enabled to support the doll portion 2 as it is projected substantially vertically and upwardly from the base. Due to the described interengagement of this upwardly extending portion and the tabs, they are adapted to sustain each other in an upright position. It will be observed that each of the tab portions extends on either side of the doll portion both to the front and to the rear so that in addition to their described oifice of sustaining the doll portion they constitute a substantially angular position in relation to the base member and as such are adapted to assist the base member in its support of the doll portion in a much more stable disposition.
It will also be noted that by merely disengaging the two slots and the two tabs, the various portions of the device may be quickly returned to their respective positions as assumed in Fig. 1.
Different changes and modifications in the invention may be made. It is not necessary, for example, to fold along the scoring in the particular manner as specified above. That is to say, that whereas in the above description the scoring which separates the doll and the intermediate member was forwardly and upwardly relative to the plane of the doll, the fold can also be folded rearwardly and upwardly in a similar manner so as to produce substantially the same effect. In such a case, the bottom base would thereupon be a folded forwardly along the scored line which separates the intermediate and base members and the tabs in this instance would thereupon be folded forwardly and then inserted in the slots in a manner similar to the method as described above.
Various other changes and modifications in the invention can be made which have not been described in the foregoing all of which may be within the spirit and scope of this invention and therefore it is not desired to be strictly limited to what has already been described. What it is desired to claim by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a blank of foldable sheet material scored to have a pair of spaced substantially parallel folding lines forming an upper portion, an intermediate portion and a base portion, said base portion being of greater width than the other portions and being scored to have a pair of spaced folding lines substantially at right angles to the other folding lines forming end tabs and said upper portion being provided with slots extending inwardly from its side marginal edges for receiving said tabs when the intermediate portion is overlying the base portion and the upper portion is extending at an angle therefrom.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a blank of foldable sheet material scored to have a pair of spaced substantially parallel folding lines forming anupper portion, an intermediate portion and a base portion, said base portion being of greater width than the other portions and being scored to have a pair of spaced fol-ding lines substantially at right angles to the other folding lines forming end tabs and said upper portion being provided with slots extending inwardly from its side marginal edges for receiving said tabs, said slots converging towards one another.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a blank sheet of folded sheet material, and comprising an upper portion having inwardly converging slots, a base portion having foldable tabs at each end, an intermediate portion between said upper and base portions, said portions being foldable along scored lines therebetween, all to the end that when assembled the said tabs are engaged in the said slots and the said upper portion is on a plane perpendicular to the said intermediate portion and said base portion and the said upper portion is supported by the said intermediate portion and the said base portion in cooperation with the said tabs.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of blank of foldable sheet material folded along scored lines forming a vertical upper portion, an intermediate connecting portion and a horizontal base portion, said base portion being of greater width than the intermediate portion and being scored transversely along a pair of spaced lines so as to form end tabs, said upper portion being provided with slots extending inwardly from its side marginal edges and said tabs being inserted therein.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a blank of foldable sheet material folded along scored lines forming a vertical upper portion, an intermediate connecting portion and a horizontal base portion, said base portion being of greater width than the intermediate portion and being scored transversely along a pair of spaced lines so as to form end tabs, said upper portion being provided with slots extending 'inwardly from its side marginal edges and said tabs being inserted therein, said intermediate portion overlying said base portion.
-6. As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a blank of folded sheet material forming a vertical upper portion, an intermediate connecting portion and a horizontal base portion, said base portion being shaped so as to form end tabs, said upper portion being provided with slots extending inwardly from its side edges and said tabs being inserted therein, said intermediate portion positioning said upper vertical portion with respect to said horizontal base portion.
