Description

W. A. WILLIAMS.
Fruit-Box.
No. 210,887. Patented Dec. 17,1878.
H'HQGRAPQER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT lN FRUIT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,887, dated December 17, 1878; application filed May 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ANTHONY WILLIAMS, of Memphis, in thecounty of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improved Method of bilaking Fruit-Boxes for Small Fruits, of which thefollowing'is aspecification:
My invention consists in a new mode of manufacturing octagon fruitboxes from thin wood; also, in apeculia-r blank for producing the bottom of the-box and its attachments.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 a plan view of the blank to form the sides. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank to form the bottom and its attachments. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the finished box with a partof the exterior broken away.
In carrying out my invention, I form blanks A B of veneer in the shapes represented in Figs. 1 and 2, scored on the lines indicated. The blank A is then bent in the octagon shape which is partially represented in Fig. 3. The wide central portion 1) of the blank 13 forms the bottom to fit within the sides A, while the upturned ends I) form the attachments of the bottom, said upturned ends being secured within the sides of the box, as illustrated in Fig. 3, by means of nails or rivets. A very small space is preferably left underneath the bottom for ventilation; but this space need not be great, as the demands of strength do not require the bottom to be set far above the lower edges, as in some other forms of box; nor does the bottom require to be of excessive thickness, as is the case with some octagon boxes heretofore made.
Having thus described my invention, the fol lowing is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The octagon fruit box constructed, as herein described, from a blank, A, transversely scored and bentto form the sides, and a sec ond blank, B, formed, as shown, with a wide central portion, b, and narrow upturned attaching ends 6 b united by oblique shoulders 11 11 so as to fit within the sides A A, as explained.
2. The blank B, constructed with a wide central portion, 1), and narrow ends I), united by oblique shoulders 12 as herein shown and described.
In testimony of which invention I hereto set my hand.
\VILLIAM ANTHONY WILLIAMS.
