CIGAR BOX.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT LUOKNER, SR., ()1? NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CIGAR-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,683, da.ted January 16, 1883.- Application filed May 19, 1882. (No model.)
1 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ROBERT LUOKNER, Sn,
a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Cigars, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
1n order that the nature and merits of my invention may be properly understood, it is deemed best, before proceeding with a description of same, to state that heretofore in the manufacture of cigar-boxes it has been the practice of the makers thereof to secure the ends of the boxes to the ends of the side pieces by driving brads through the former and into the ends of the latter. This construction of box is somewhat defective, for the reason that the cigars, after being placed therein, are subjected to a certain amount of pressure for the purpose of giving them a neater appearance, as well as to insure the fitting of the cover over same. Now, this pressure not only flattens but widens the cigars, and as they are always placed crosswise in the box the tendency is to press outward the ends thereof, and thus loosen the brads by which they are secured.
My invention consists in constructing the ends of the box with recessed sides, so as'to fit between and lap over the ends of the side pieces, the latter of less height than the former, and the cover out so as to fit over the sides and between the end pieces. The projections of the latter pieces form square corners, and thus the appearance of an ordinary cigar-box is pre served, The bottom is rectangular in form, and in size equals the length and width of the box, to the lower edges of which it is secured in the usual manner.
My invention will now be understood by referring to the drawings, on which Figure 1 represents the ordinary construction of a cigar- 4 5 box, and Fig. 2 my newly-invented plan for constructing same.
The letter A represents the bottom, which is the same in each case.
B B are the sides, and G G the ends, of the boxes.
In the ordinarily-constructed cigar-box, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be observed that the sides B are somewhat shorter in length than the bottom of the box, and that the ends 0 are secured in position by bradsd, driven through the same and into the ends of the side pieces. The brads, following the grain of wood in the latter pieces, are liable to be loosened or withdrawn from same upon the slightest end-pressure from within the box.
By referring to Fig. 2 it. will be seen that my invention consists mainly in the recessed ends 0, the projections of which form the upper corners of the box when the several parts thereof are fitted together, as shown and described. The brads ein this plan are driven from the sides of the box, and are therefore not liable to be dislodged by end-pressure from within the same.
Having described my invention, what [claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, IS
A cigarbox the ends of which are recessed to fit between and lap over the ends of the side pieces, to which they are secured by brads driven through the latter and into the ends of the former, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
