UNITED STATES PATENT Onricn.
CHARLES E. SCOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ULYSES G. WOODMAN AND WILLIAM B. LORD, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,784, dated November 8, 1898. Application filed November 8, 1897. Serial No. 657,776. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
- The present invention relates to that class ing the manner of folding the blank and the condition thereof at three different stages in the process of making the box. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the completed box. Fig. 6 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a blank differing slightly from the blank shown in Fig. 1, from which a box embodying some features of the invention may be made.
A box embodying the invention in its preferred form is made of a single blank, of the outline shown in Fig. l, creased or crimped upon the lines numbered l-to 10, inclusive. These lines divide the blank up into parts lettered a to f, inclusive, all of which are equal in width and in length, and parts lettered g to k, inclusive, all of which are equal in width but vary in length with the width and length of the parts a to f. In order to form a box from this blank, it is folded at right angles upon the lines 1 and 2, thereby bringing the parts a and b parallel, as shown in Fig. 2. The blank is then folded at right angles upon the lines 3 and 4, thereby bringing the parts I) and 0 parallel, as shown in Fig. 3. This brings the part a upon the part c, and the two parts form that side of the box which, for convenience of description, will be herein called the back. The blank is then folded at right angles upon the lines 5 and 6, thereby bringing the parts 0 and 61 parallel and bringing the part (1 down upon the part b, to which it is secured, preferably by pasting, said parts I) and d forming that side of the box which is herein called the front, as shown in Fig. 4:. This completes the construction of the box proper.
By folding the blank at right angles upon the lines 7 and 8 the parts 0 and e are brought parallel and the part c is brought down upon the front 01 of thebox. When so folded, the part. 3' constitutes the top of the box and the part 6 a flap which rests upon the front of the box, or which in one form of the invention may be tucked into the box. When the blank is folded at right angles upon the lines 9 and 10, the parts 6 and f are brought parallel. The part f may be folded against the outside of the back, or it may be used as a tuck and inserted between the two parts a and c of the back, as shown in Fig. 6. Where it is not necessary or desirable to fasten the outside flap e, the extension of the blank comprising the parts f and 7.6 may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 7, in which case the part 6 will be simply a loose flap, which may rest against the front of the box or be tucked inside of the box, as above suggested. In this form of the invention I prefer to secure the parts a and 0 together, preferably by pasting them; but in the form of the invention shown in the preceding figures I prefer to leave them unsecured in order to form a pocket for the tuck f, as already described.
The parts I) and d are cut away, as shown at Z, in order to form a finger-notch for facilitating the removal of the contents of the box where it is used for matches and the like.
In the preferred form of the invention it is not absolutely essential that the parts 12 and d be secured together, since the several parts of the box will be held in place when the tuck f is inserted in the pocketin the back of the box, as already described. I may therefore sell the box in knockdown form, or, in other words, simply sell the blanks, such as shown in Fig. l, leaving it for the user to construct the box in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, the following is What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a box formed of a single blank comprising the ee11- trally-disposed part c, the parts I) and h proceeding from one end thereof, the parts 0 and j proceeding from the other end thereof, the parts cl and t proceeding from one side of the part c and the parts a and g proceeding from the part b at the side thereof opposite the part (1, said parts being folded upon the lines 1 to 8, inclusive, whereby the parts a and c are brought together to form the double back ,of the box, the parts I) and d are brought together to form the double front of the box, the parts 9 and t form the sides of the box, the part 72, forms the bottom of the box, the part j forms the top of the box, and the part 6 forms the flap thereof, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a blank from which to make a box, having the parts lettered a to e inclusive of substantially equal dimensions and the parts lettered g to j inclusive of equal width connecting the parts a to einclusive, the several parts being separated or marked 0E one from another by creases numbered 1 to 8 inclusive, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a box formed of a single blank of substantially the outline shown, folded at right angles upon the lines numbered 1 to 10 inclusive, dividing the blank up into the parts lettered a to 7: in-
clusive, so disposed that the parts ct and 0' come together and form the back of the box, the parts at and I) come together and form the front of the box, the parts 9 and 11 form the opposite sides of the box, the parts h andj form the bottom and top of the box respectively, the part 8 forms the front flap, and the part f forms a tuck united with the front flap by the part 70, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a box formed of a single piece and having a front and back of double thickness, a side uniting one thickness of the front and one thickness of the back, an opposite side uniting the other thickness of the front and the other thickness of the back, and a bottom uniting one thickness of the front and one thickness of the back, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a blank from which to make a box, comprising a piece of paper or similar material having substantially the outline shown and described, creased upon the lines numbered 1 to 10 inelusive, providing the parts lettered a to f inclusive of substantially equal dimensions and the parts lettered g to 70 inclusive, of equal width, substantially as set forth.
