ALONZO E. TURNBULL, OF UPPER SANDUSKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WALTER M. LENHART, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,395., dated September 29, 1874; application filed J nne 30, 1374.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO E. TURNBULL, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, have invented Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is the forming of paper packages by a peculiar method of folding paper, or other suitable material, in such a manner that, when open, it forms a raised projection all around the top of the package, and when closed the said raised projection folds in at two sides, forming the top or cover, and the cover is then held in place by means of a projecting tuck, the whole formed of one or more pieces of paper, or other suitable material, and forming a convenient package for putting up chewing and smoking tobaccos, and other suitable materials, ready for the market and the use of the consumer.
The construction is as follows: In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the form of the blank piece of paper. Fig. 2 shows the first folding, which is done by turning down the two ends B B, Fig. 1, indicated by the dotted lines. The projecting piece O, together with the sides B B, are folded up similar to the folding of common paper packages, thus forming the end, as shown in Fig. 2 by the letters D D. The sides are then folded in and against piece 0 to the point marked E. The other end of the package is then folded in a like manner, which forms the package, as shown in Fig. 4.

which completes the forming of the package."
I do not expect to confine myself to any particular size or shape of packages, for they may be of any form or shape, and be constructed of any material that is best suited to what the packages are intended to contain, and the folding top may be applied to form the top of almost any kind of paper box or package.
I am well aware that paper boxes and packages have long been made with folding top of diiferent kinds, and I do not, therefore, broad- 1y, claim the folding top, as usually applied and used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, the paper box consisting of the bottom A, sides H, inwardly-folding top B B, and tuck-flap O, con: structed as described.
