UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH H. SMITH, OF DELTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SMITH MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX OR BUCKET FOR BERBIES, 81.0.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,522, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed March 22, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be itknown thatI, SETH H. SMITH, of Delta, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Buckets for Berries, 850.; andldo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use to the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. at is a plan view of the blanks from which my improved box or bucket and lining are made.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved box or bucket for carrying oysters and the like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particular ly pointed out in the claims.
My improved box is made principally of a sheet of wood veneer, (indicated by A in Fig. 4 of the drawings.) Said sheet, which is rectangular in shape,is provided on each side with 0 two parallel incisions, G O, the inner ends of which are connected by two parallel scored lines, D I). The flaps E, bounded by the incisions G O and lines D, are designed to form the ends of the box. From the ends of the 5'lin'es D scored lines F F extend diagonally or divergentlyto the ends of the sheet,as shown. As much of the sheetA as lies between the lines F F at each end is designed to form the sides G of the box, while the portion H between the lines D D forms the bottom.
The method of folding the blank so as to form myimproved box will be easily understood by reference to the drawings. The sides and ends are bent upwardly, and the flaps I,
5 between the incisions G and lines F, are folded over the ends.
My improved box is provided with a lining,
J, formed of a single sheet of paper, which, without being cut, is simply folded, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to tit in the box, the flaps K, formed by folding said sheet, being accommodated hetween the ends E and flaps I.
I1 is a bail or handle, formed of wire, the ends of which are bentso as to form hooks M, passing through the ends E and flaps I of the box and the ends N and flaps K of the lining, thus clinching or securing the parts together and serving to hold the lining securely in the box. A cover, 0, consisting of a simple piece of veueering suitably warped or curved, may also he provided.
My improved box or bucket is simple, inexpensive, and, being provided with the lining J, constructed as described, is quite watertight, so that it may be used for carrying ice- 6 cream and the like without danger of leaking.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combinatiomwith a bent wooden box, constructed substantially as described, of a lining folded from a. single uncut sheet, and secured in position by means of the hooked ends of the wire bail or handle, as set forth.
2. The herein-described improved box or bucket, having sides G,cnds E.and flaps I, in combination with the lining folded from a single uncut sheet and having flaps K, and the wire bail or handlehaving hooked ends M, passing through the ends and flaps of the box and lining, which are thereby secured together, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETH H. SMITH.
