To all whom'it 'may concern.l
Be it known that 1, PETER HENRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiam, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Berry- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a berry-box which may be constructed with a minimum of parts, and which may be secured in operative condition wit-hout the use of any fastening means other than what is provided by the interiitting of the wall and bottom parts thereof.
The invention consists in the novel construction of parts and the manner of uniting the same, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a box embodying` my invention. Fig. 4: is a face view of the wall-part of the box, shown flattened out; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the bottom-part.
The box is formed with two end walls 10, side walls 11 and 12, and'corner walls 13 between the adjacent end and side walls. This portion of the box is made from a single sheet 9 Fig. 4) of thin material, such as wood-veneer, and is scored along transverse lines 14C to facilitate its being folded to produce the aforesaid walls of single thicknesses excepting in forming the wall 12 the flap part 12 is laid against the flap 12" at the other end of the sheet. At a distance above the lower edge of the said sheet in the corner walls 13 are a series of slots 15 disposed to be in the same horizontal plane. A vertically arranged slot 16 is provided in flap 12 to accommodate a tongue 17 which projects from the end of the flap 12. This tongue is desirably extended from about the mid-height of the shet, and is directed to incline downwardly so that when the sheet is folded into octagonal coniguration, as represented in Fig. 1, with the tongue inserted from the outside of flap 12 through the slot 16 and the tongue then folded back upon the inside of this flap, its end will be located below the plane of the slots 15, as shown in Fig. 3.
The bottom of the box is comprised of a rectangular sheet 18, see Fig. 5, of veneer, or an equivalent, of a length somewhat Specification of Letters Patent.

greater than twice the distance between the end walls 10 while its width is slightly less than the distance between the side walls 11 and 12. This sheet is scored along trans verse lines 19 to divide the same into end iiaps 2O and 21 of unequal lengths with an intermediate portion 22 which is of a length approximately that of the distance between the two end walls of the box. Another transverse score line 23 is desirably provided in the sheet portion 22 to conveniently bend the same in the assemblage of the box. The scores are all made upon the same side of the sheet and in consequence may be accomplished by a single operation of a machine. The sheet is folded upon the lines 19 to have the flap 20 lie against the underside of the sheet portion 22 with the other flap 21 underlying the iap 20, see Fig. 3.
After the sheet 9 is folded to furnish the aforesaid walls and with the tongue 17 inserted through the slot 16 and folded against the inside of the flap 12, the folded sheet 18 is introduced thereinto from below by pressing upwardly against the flap 2O there of at or near its mid-length while the ends bear against the corner walls 13 of the other part resulting in the bending of the bottom upwardly about the score 23, as represented by broken lines in Fig. 3. By thus bending the bottom the distance between the ends of the portion 22 of the bottom is decreased to allow its corners to enter the slots 15 and whereupon the bottom may be flattened by a downward pressure from its upper side to cause the bottom corners to be thrust through the slots 15. The bottom in such condition secures the tongue 17 in locked engagement and also by bearing against the inner surfaces of the side and end walls prevents the wall part of the device from becoming distorted. Furthermore, the slots 15 afford a positive support to the box bottom.
The box parts when constructed in accordance with my invention may obviously be shipped unassembled and in compact condition and, as they require no staples or similar fastenings, may be readily put together by the fruit growers or others having occasion for boxes of this character.
What I claim, is-
1. The combination with the wall-part of an octagonal box, of a bottom formed of a single piece which is scored along three transverse lines, the bottom being folded upon the two outer of said scores to provide two aps which underlie the intermediate portion of the piece, the other of said scores being arranged for e'ecting a bend in said intermediate part to afford means to enter the corners of the bottom into slots provided in the wall-part.
2. A two-part berry box comprising a wall-part formed with overlyingterminal iaps, a tongue projecting from the end of one of said flaps and adapted to extend through a slot provided in the other Hap, and a bottom-part provided with two end iaps and folded to have the same underlie said intermediate portion and overlap each other, such folded bottom being of a length to fit within the box and have its corners project outwardly through slots provided in the wall-part.
3. A box of the class described, comprising the sides formed of a single piece and provided with a terminal tongue adapted to extend inwardly through a slot provided adjacent to the other end of the piece, and a bottom part formed of a single piece which is folded along two transverse lines to afford two iaps of unequal lengths whereof the longer one is caused to overlie and be supported by the shorter flap, said bottom part being sustained from its corners by the first named piece, the bottom coperating with one of the box sides to secure said tongue in position to lock the ends of the rst named piece in operative condition.
4. A fruit box comprised of an octagonal shaped wall having terminal flaps overlap each other, one of said flaps being provided with a longitudinally protruding tongue which is engaged in an aperture provided in the other of said fiaps, and the box bot tom which is folded to aord two flaps which underlie the intermediate portion of the bottom, said folded bottoni having its corners extend through slots provided in said wall and the edges of the bottom fit against the longitudinal and transverse sides of the wall.
