BOX AND BOX BLANK Filed April 23, 1936 O 3 /0- 4 1mg? Zhwentor 41 (Ittomeg Patented Jan. 11,1938
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application April 23,
4 Claims.
This invention is an improvement in boxes and box blanks and relates more particularly to containers for electrical condenser units which are adapted to be inserted and sealed therein.
One of the objects of the invention is to construct a box from a one piece blank cut from suitable sheet material and arranged to be folded to provide a reinforced base or support by which the box may be rigidly supported on a flat surface.
Another object is to provide a box having end flaps, a side wall extending beyond the box body, and an end cover flap adapted to form, with the extended end-of the side wall, an additional reinforcement for supporting the box rigidly upon a fiat surface.
A further object is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable box formed from a single piece blank and which is adapted to be folded so that but one surface of the blank will form the complete outer surface of the box. In this manner a blank comprising a sheet of stiff paper board having one surface in color or coated within a metallic finish may be employed and the box when folded and assembled according to my invention, will have its complete outer or exposed surface thus materially enhanced in appearance.
Other objects and adavantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of invention showing the box assembled and the ends closed.
Figure 2 isa similar view showing the box ends partially open.
Figure 3- is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed according to the illustrated embodiment of the invention.
I will first proceed to describe the box blank illustrated in the drawing. The blank is out or stamped preferably from a single sheet of suitable materialwsuch as pasteboard, sheet metal or fibre and con iprises a plurality of side walls or sections, indicated at i, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the end flaps and 1, and the cover flaps 8 and 9. The sections I and 5 overlie one another when the box is assembled, as indicated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, and in this manner provide a very rigid, reinforced bottom or 1936, Serial No. 76,038
base for the box which is very desirable in mounting the box upon a flat suface in use.
The sections l and 5 are of suflicient length that they overlie the extremities of the box when folded as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, thus pro- 5 viding end portions for the convenient fastening of the box to a base or support.
The adjoining sections and end flaps of the blank are bent inwardly along the weakened or scored lines. The cover flaps 8 and 9 are bent l0 outwardly at I, while the portions H are bent in an opposite direction at H. In this manner, when the blank is assembled, it will form a box of elongated form as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It is to be noted that by my invention I am enabled to form boxes of a sheet blank which is coated or has but one entire surface in color. In so folding the box the colored or coated surface may be exposed on all sides of the box, thus giving a very pleasing appearance without necessitating the coloring or coating of portions of both the inner and outer surfaces of the blank sheet in order to insure a completely colored or coated outer appearance. Furthermore, by my invention I can accomplish this result without the necessity of using a composite blank or one comprising a plurality of separate parts.
At I3 I have perforated the blank so as to provide openings for conductors at one end of the box. This structure is particularly desirable when the boxes are used to house electrolytic condenser pads to which electric conductors are attached. This aflords convenient means for connecting the pad in a circuit after it has been sealed in the box. The openings I 3 are preferably located at one end of the box and at points intersecting the sections 2, 3, and 4 and the flaps l and 9. V
The end closure is simple and very durable and effective. 40
When the box is formed as in Figure 2 the end closures are completed by binding the flaps 8 or 9 downwardly to overlie the end flaps E or I respectively, while the portion ll of the cover flaps is bent outwardly to lie fiat against the extended 45 portions of the members I and 2 The adjacent faces of the members I and 2 may be secured together with adhesive, rivets, or in any other suitable manner.
The box formed in accordance with my inven- 50 tion is not only pleasing in appearance, but is extremely simple in construction and very durable in use. Its durability is enhanced by the overlying members I and 2 and the reinforced end closures. By folding the cover flaps in the manner described the protruding ends of the box are reinforced by three thicknesses of material which prevent collapse or flattening of the box even though it is eifipty.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope'of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A box blank including as a single unit a plurality of walls formed by folding said blank iongitudinally the walls formed at opposite sides of the blank being substantially co-extensive in length and opposite ends of each of said walls extending beyond the ends of the intermediate walls of said blank, and an end closure formed at one end of one of said intermediate walls and provided with an extension adapated to overlie one of the respective ends of the adjacent co-extensive wall ends, when the blank is folded and assembled.
2. A box blank including as a single unit a plurality of walls formed by folding said blank longitudinally the walls formed at opposite sides of the blank being substantially co-extensive in length and opposite ends of each of said walls extending beyond the ends of the intermediate walls of said blank, and an end closure formed at one end of one of said intermediate walls and provided with an extension adapted to overlie one of the respective ends of the adjacent co-extensive wall ends, said co-extensive walls and the extension 01. said end closure having openings formed therein which are adapted to register one with another when the blank is folded and assembled.
3. A box comprising a hollow body including a plurality of longitudinal walls, two 01 said walls being co-extensive and the opposite ends of each of said co-extensive walls extending beyond the respective sides of the other walls, and cover flaps for each end of the box, one of said covers having an extension bent" outwardly from the in-' terior of the box and lying upon the adjacent extended portions of the co-extensive walls to provide a rigid reinforced box end structure,
4. A box comprising a hollow body including a plurality of longitudinal walls, two of said walls being co-extensive and. the opposite ends of each of said co-extensive walls extending beyond the respective sides of the other walls, and cover flaps for each end of the box, and a cover member formed at opposite ends of one of said other longitudinal walls, said cover members including a' JESSE T. CURTIS.
