2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a display carton, and particularly to a carton on which advertising matter or printed directions for use of the prodnot is displayed in connection with the object packed in the carton.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application Serial No. 152,377 filed March 28, 1950.
The present invention contemplates a single blank of cardboard or similar material which is folded to form a simple, inexpensive carton which may include a display card integral therewith. The blank may be cut so that when it is folded it will have an open display window through which the object packed in the carton maybe viewed. When a display opening is provided it does not interfere with the security with which the object is held. The ends of the carton are preferably permanently closed after the object is packed in the carton so that the object can not be removed from the carton without destroying the carton, or at least giving visual evidence of the fact that the carton has been opened.
The structure by which the above and other advantages of the present invention are attained will be described in the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, showing preferred illustrative embodiments of the invention, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a display carton embodying one form of the invention in which the carton has a display card associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the blank from which the carton of Fig. l is formed;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view, taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the carton of Fig. 1 before the final closing operation;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention having a display window in only the top wall of the carton;
Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view, taken along the line 1*! of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention without a display window;
Fig. 9 is a cross sectional view, taken along the line 9-9 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a perspective veiw of another embodiment of the invention without a display card; and
Fig. 11 is a cross sectional view. taken along the line I l-l I of Fig. 10.
In the various embodiments of the invention, similar reference characters are used to designate similar structure.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates the blank of the body portion of the carton. The body portion has a pair of longitudinally extending fold lines 3 and 4 which define the longitudinal edges of the body portion. Another pair of fold lines 5 and 6, parallel to fold lines 3 and l, define the top wall I and side walls 8 and 9 of the carton. The distances between lines 3 and 6 and between lines '4 and 5 are preferably equal, to provide side Walls of uniform height.
The body portion is cut out along the lines i0, Ii, l2 and I3 to provide an open display window through which the contents of the carton, such as tube 44, may be viewed. Lines in and i2 extend entirely across top wall portion 1' and equidistantly into side wall portions 8 and 9 so that the open display window extends downwardly the same distance from top I through both side walls 8 and 9. Cutting the display opening so that it extends downwardly into side walls 8 and 9 increases the visibility of the display and enhances its appeal by giving it a three dimensional appearance.
A tab portion P, which forms the card portion of the display carton, is separated from the body portion by fold line 3 and extends laterally beyond each end of the body portion, as indicated at I 6 and ii. A tab portion 18, which forms the bottom portion of the carton, is separated from side portion 8 of the carton by fold line 4 and extends laterally beyond each end of the body portion, as indicated at 19 and 20. ifab i8 is provided with glue or any other suitable adhesive along the underside of its free longitudinal edge, as indicated at 2!.
Top portion 1 is provided at one end with a laterally extending end tab 22 separated from the top portion by a fold line 23 which coincides with the lateral edge 24 of body portion 2. Tab 22 is provided with a fold line 25 parallel to fold line 23 and spaced therefrom a distance equal to the distance between fold lines 3 and 6. The opposite end of top portion 1 is provided with an end tab 26 which is separated from top portion 1 by a fold line 21 which coincides with the lateral edge 28 of body portion 2. Tab 26 is provided with a fold line 29 parallel to fold line 21 and spaced therefrom a distance equal to the distance between fold lines 3 and 6.
The method of assembling the carton comprises the steps of folding the body portion upwardly from tab 15 along the fold line 3. The top portion is then folded outwardly along fold line 6 and downwardly along fold line 5. Tab portion 18 is then folded inwardly along fold line 4 to bring adhesive portion 2| into engagement with the edge of card tab 15 adjacent the fold line 3. As seen in Figure 5, this method of folding brings the underside of the edge of tab 18 to which the glue is applied into juxtaposition with the underside of one edge of tab l5, to which it is glued, to form a tubular carton open at its opposite ends and provided with an open display window and a display card extending from one side of the carton.
The end tabs 22 and 26 are folded downwardly along fold lines 23 and 21 and then outwardly along iold lines 25 and 29. These folds are for the purpose of forming the ends. The object to be housed in the carton is then placed therein. End tabs 22 and 26 are then pushed into position to close the ends of the carton with the portions 30 and 3! juxtaposed on tab is which constitutes the bottom of the carton. Portions 3i] and 31 may be glued to bottom 18 or otherwise suitably secured, for example, by means of staples 32 and 33 (Figure 1) which may be applied simultaneously. If desired, portions 30 and 3! may be removably secured to bottom I8.
The particular order in which the blank is folded along the various fold lines is not critical, as long as each fold is in the proper direction. The exposed surface of the card portion 15 may be decorated or printed on, as desired.
The portions of the carton are so dimensioned with respect to the length of the object to be contained therein that the top wall portions 1 and the adjacent end portions of side walls 8 and S overlie the extremities of the object and prevent its removal from the carton through the display window without destroying the carton.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 6 and '7 differs from the structure previously described in that the longitudinal cut lines II and I3 coincide with fold lines and 6 and the open display window does not extend into side walls 8' and 9.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 is essentially the same as the embodiments previously described except that the top wall 1 is imperforate.
The structure of Figs. and 11 does not have the open display window and the display card.
The bottom wall 34 is the same width as the top wall 1', but is slightly longer to provide tabs 35 and 36 projecting outwardly at opposite ends. Tab 35 is preferably provided with an aperture 31 for a purpose hereinafter described. The side wall 8" has extending therefrom a glue flap 38 which is adhered to bottom wall 34 when the carton is formed. The portion 38' of end tab 22 is juxtaposed on tab 35 and is secured thereto by adhesive or by a staple. Adhesive is preferred because portion 30 is preferably provided with an aperture 39 which registers with aperture 31 when the portion 30' is juxtaposed on tab 35, and the aperture leaves little space for a staple. The lower end of the carton, as viewed in Fig. 10, is left open until the object is placed in the carton, and the portion 3| of end tab 26 is then juxtaposed on tab 36 and secured thereto by a staple 33 or other suitable means to close the carton. Apertures 31 and 39 are provided at the upper end of the carton to facilitate suspending the carton from a pin or hook projecting from a display card adapted to hold a plurality of cartons.
Although I have described several preferred embodiments of my invention in considerable detail, it will be understood that the drawings are intended to be illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact structure disclosed.
I claim:
1. A single blank comprising a body portion ioldabie along a pair of parallel fold lines to form a top wall and side walls of a tubular carton, said side walls and top wall being cut away to form a single display window, a tab portion adjacent one of said side walls foldable on a fold line extending along the bottom edge of said one side wall to form a display card, and another tab portion adjacent said other side wall foldable to form a bottom for said carton, said bottom extending beyond both ends of said top and side walls, the free edge of said last mentioned tab portion being secured to said display card, and a pair of end tabs integral with opposite ends of said top wall, said end tabs being foldable downwardly to close the ends of said carton and then outwardly in juxtaposition with said bottom, the outer portions of said end tabs being secured to said bottom.
2. A single blank comprising a body portion ioldable along a pair of parallel fold lines to form a top wall and side walls of a tubular carton, a tab portion adjacent one of said side walls foldable on a fold line extending along the bottom edge of said one side wall to form a display card, and another tab portion adjacent said other side wall foldable to form a bottom for said carton, said bottom extending beyond both ends of said top and side walls, the free edge of said last mentioned tab portion being secured to said display card, and a pair of end tabs integral with opposite ends of said top wall, said end tabs being foldable downwardly to close the ends of said carton and then outwardly in juxtaposition with said bottom, the outer portions of said end tabs being secured to said bottom.
