UNITED STATES PA TENT OFFICE.
CHARLES TATI-IAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MAILING-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES TA'rI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mailing device consisting of a box which may be made of strong paper or other suitable material. The continuation of one side makes a flap adapted to receive the address and the required postage.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box embodying this invention the box being closed and the mailing fla being swung to position to expose the ad ress. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of Fig. 1 the top of the box being opened. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 along line w m. Fig. i is a section along line y y Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows the box opened out into fiat position.
The material or blank for the box is formed of one piece, and is secured transversely, as shown in Fig. 5. The members 1 and 3 form the sides of the box. The members 2 and 4 of the blank form the front and rear of the box. These members 1 to 4 extend in one direction. A fifth portion 5 formed as a continuation of the outer end member 4 serves as the mailing flap.
At opposite edges of the members 1 to 4 are flaps 6, 7, 8 and 9 making eight in all in addition to the main members 1 to 4.
In forming the box a gummed edge or lip 11 formed as an extension of the outer side member 1 is caused to adhere to the rear member 4 as seen in Fig. 2. Four of the flaps 6, 7 8 and 9 are adapted to close the top of the box and the opposite four flaps form the bottom of the box. The flaps 6 when the box is closed overlie the portions 7, 8 and 9 and these flaps 6 as seen are formed with tabs perforated or adapted for the engagement of clasps or fasteners of metal or the like. The clips or fasteners are shown supported by the front member 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

and are adapted to hold or engage the tabs by means of their engaging points 10.
One or both ends of the box can be made to fold over the body and to be fastened by a flexible metallic catch as indicated. Such a flexible or releasable catch will permit inspection or examination of the contents of the box if desired.
The flap 5 affords a convenient surface for addressing and makes it easy to cancel the postage stamp without exposing the contents of the box to injury which at. times results when cancellation or pressure is applied directly on the package.
This invention meets the need of a convenient device for mailing other than first class matter in a safe manner. If desired the ends of the box could be pasted or the box form a closed package subject to letter postage rates.
\Vhen both ends of the box are open the same may be knocked down flat.
I claim A mailing box constructed of a single blank of material scored transversely to provide pairs of alternating side and end members each formed at opposite ends with a pair of flaps, the flaps at one side of the blank being adapted to be folded upon each other to close the top of the box. and those at the other side to close the bottom; a lip formed upon the free longitudinal edge of the outer side member and adapted to be folded against and sealed to the inner face of the outer end member; a mailing flap formed as a continuation of said outer end member; a pair of tabs formed as extensions of the flaps of said outer end member and adapted to be folded toward each other and against the outer face of the other end member; and removable fastening devices for attaching said tabs to the last-mentioned end member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES TATHAM. IVitnesses:
W. C. Hanan,
CHRISTIAN ALBTSTAED'I.
