HANDLE FOR PAPER BOXES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RAOUL J. GRUENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Handle for Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.

This invention relates to a handle for paper boxes, and its object is to provide a convenient handle for suit boxes or other kinds of boxes, which handle will be suitably connected to the box to carry the material placed therein, and which handle will not seriously weaken the construction of the box when secured thereto.

Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the slot in the box through which the handle is inserted will be stifi'ened to such an extent as to avoid any danger of weakening the box owing to the fact that a long slot must be cut for the insertion of the handle.

Another object of the invention is to provide a handle which can be applied to the box with the minimum labor, the handle being of such a form as to waste as little material as possible and be of as simple a form in cutting as possible.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.

Fig. 1 shows a common form of telescope box with one of the handles applied to each side thereof.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of handle which makes use of the waste cut ofi in the manner shown in the other figures.

"The numeral 1 indicates one of the box sections-and 2 the box section which telescopes into section 1. Adjacent the center of the upper corner of each box section there is a slot 3 which is as long as the projecting gripping portion of the handle 4.

Inside the box the handle is provided with a longer gummed portion 5 to which the gripping portion 4 is connected.

In order to close the slot through which the handle is passed when it is to be secured to the box, the box top has a depending flap 6. This flap is pushed back out of the way, as shown in Figure 6, when the handle is to be pushed into place.

When the upper gripping portion of the handle has been pushed through the box top, the tab 6 is pushed outwardly so that it can be glued in place in the lane of the remaining portion of the box side, as indicated in Figure 1.

Since the handle is made of a relatively stiff piece of material, this stifl'ens the central portion of the box and, as the part 5 is glued to the inside of the box, at opposite ends of the flap 6 there results a relatively strong handle for supporting the load carried by the box.

This construction dispenses with the necessity of extra tabs on the handle, and when applied to foldin boxes enables the handle to be easily glue in place and piled flat with the box bottoms and tops.

In Fig. 7 there is shown a handle which may be used with the same box shown in Fig. 1, but which has the

10 and 11 are secured to the inside of the top of the What I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form, within the purview of my invention.

1. A handle for paper boxes, comprising a longitudinally extending gummed member having a gripping ortion connected therewith, and a slotted ox through which said gripping portion extends, the handle being a longitudinally extending member with a D-shaped gripping portion secured thereto, a box slotted to permit said gripping portion of the handle to pass therethrough and a tab as long as the opening in the handle adapted to bend over the longitudinal member which latter is secured permanently to the inside of the box and to said flap Whereby the slot in the box is closed.
