Bernstein Attorney, Agent, or Firm-Jessup & Beecher; Keith [57] ABSTRACT An improved one-piece blank, composed of paperboard or other suitable material, is provided for the construction of a box having rectangular front, rear and side panels, and further having end and cover flaps, and a pair of additional flaps adapted to be folded over one another to provide an extended end for the rear wall of the box. This extended end forms an advertising panel, and it has a hang tag formed in its rear side whereby the box may be hanged from a rack, without obstructing the message on the extended end.

3 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures BOX BLANK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is usual in the construction of paperboard packages of the rectangular box form to provide a one-piece blank which is appropriately scored, and which may subsequently be folded and glued into the shape of the desired box. The present invention provides such a blank which, when folded and glued, provides an improved reinforced box which has cover flaps at each end, and which also has a panel extending beyond the top of the box in co-planar relationship with the rear wall, and on which an appropriate advertising message may be inscribed. As mentioned above, a hang tag is formed on the rear side of the panel, by which the box may be hung from a rack, without in any way obstructing the advertising message on the front of the additional panel.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT As illustrated in FIG. 1, an improved blank is provided which may be formed of paperboard, pasteboard,

- metal or other appropriate material. A first plurality of score lines l2, l4, l6 and 17 are formed on the blank in parallel relationship with one another. The score lines 14 and 16 define between them a front panel 18 for the box; the score lines 12 and 14 defined one of the side panels 20, and the score lines 16 and 17 define the other of the side panels 22. The score line 12 also defines a rear panel 24 for the box at one end of the blank,'and the score line 17 defines a second rear panel 26 at the other end of the blank.

A pair of score lines 30 and 32, which extend perpendicular to the aforementioned score lines, defines respectively a cover flap 34 and end flaps 36 and 38 at one end of the front panel 18 and side panels and 22; and a cover flap 40 and end flaps 42 and 44 and the other end of the rear panel 24 and side panels 20 and 22. A further score line 45 defines an end portion 34a for the cover flap 34, and a further score line 46 defines an end portion 40a'for the cover flap 40.

The score line 32 also defines an additional panel 52 at the right-hand end of the rear panel 26 in FIG. 1, and

the score line 47 also defines a second additional panel 50 at the end of the panel 52. A hang tag 56 is formed in the additional panel 52.

To form the box shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the side panels 20 and 22 are turned up out of the plane of the front panel 18 along the score lines 14 and 16, and the rear panels 24 and 26 are turned over one another around the score lines 12 and 16, and are glued together. The end flaps 36, 38 and 42, 44 may then be turned in about their respective score lines 30 and 32. and the cover flaps 34 and 40 may be folded into the resulting box. The panel 50 is folded back over the 7 panel 52, so as to provide an advertising extension for the box, as best shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. The panels 50 and 52 are glued together.

The hang tag is normally in a position in the panel 52. However, to hang the box, the box tag is turned up to the position shown in FIGS. 2 and 4. It will be observed that when the hang tag is turned up to the position of FIGS. 2 and 4, it does not in any way obstruct the message on the front of the panel 50.

The invention provides, therefore, an improved blank whereby a rectangular box or package may be formed quickly and economically, and which has the features described above.

It will be appreciated that although a particular embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, modifications may be made. It is intended to cover all such modifications in the following claims which come within the spirit and scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

l. A one-piece paper board blank for forming a rectangular carton having a first plurality of parallel score lines thereon defining a front panel in the central portion of the blank, a pair of side panels at either side of the front panel, and a pair of rear panels adjacent respective ones of said side panels; and having a second plurality of parallel score lines perpendicular to said first plurality and defining a first cover flap on one end of one of said front and rear panels, a second cover flap on the opposite end of one of said front andrear panels, a first additional panel on the opposite end of the other of said rear panels; and a hang tag formed in said first additional panel.

2. The blank defined in claim 1, in which said second plurality of score lines includes a score line defining a second additional panel at the end of said first additional panel, said second additional panel being of the same dimensions as said first additional panel and being adapted to be folded over said first additional panel.

3. The one-piece paper board blank defined in claim 1, in which said second plurality of parallel score lines includes score lines defining end flaps on either end of said side panels.

Claims (3)

1. A one-piece paper board blank for forming a rectangular carton having a first plurality of parallel score lines thereon defining a front panel in the central portion of the blank, a pair of side panels at either side of the front panel, and a pair of rear panels adjacent respective ones of said side panels; and having a second plurality of parallel score lines perpendicular to said first plurality and defining a first cover flap on one end of one of said front and rear panels, a second cover flap on the opposite end of one of said front and rear panels, a first additional panel on the opposite end of the other of said rear panels; and a hang tag formed in said first additional panel.
