This `invention relates to boxes or cartons, and has special reference to boxes or cartons made up of cardboard cr the like.

Objects of the invention are to provide an improved box or carton havingv some or al1 of the walls thereof composed of cardboard or the like and having the side wall or walls composed of a number of attached plies of cardboard or other -material, with laterally extended portions in connection with one of said plies attached to the adjacent top or bottom wall of the box or carton and preferably extending under and beyond the remaining ply or plies; to provide one or more inner walls or partitions dividing the enclosure formed by said side wall or walls into a number of separate compartments designed and adapted to receive confections of different iiavors, or other articles; and to provide means for sustaining and retaining said inner wall or partition, or a plurality thereof, in proper relationship to the bottom wall of the box or carton and to each other.

Another object of the invention is to provide ornamenting means on the surface of the outer wall or walls and extending across the fold of the different plies thereof and along the inner surface of the inner ply, dispensing with the usual necessity of attaching a separate strip of paper or foil or the like on the outer surface of the outer wall or walls and across the upper raw or cut edge thereof and along the inner surface thereof to provide a finished appearance, thereby eliminating numerous operations necessary in forming ordinary boxes or cartons.

Other objects should appear from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the outer wall or walls of a box or carton may be made in accordance with the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a plan View looking to the inside of the box or carton, the lid being removed and parts of the bottom members broken away.

Fig. 3 is a View looking to the inside of the lid.

Fig, 4 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, showing a box or carton constructed in accordance with the present invention and including an inner wall device dividing the inside of the box or carton into two compartments.

Fig. 6 is a View showing the blank from which the inner wall structure is formed.

My improved box or carton comprises a bottom wall I composed of cardboard or the like and which may be made in any desired form or shape, 5 since the form or shape chosen for illustration in the drawing may be changed or varied as desired and other forms or shapes used instead.

The outer wall or walls of the box or carton, in accordance with the present invention, is made up of a blank such as that shown in Fig. 1, comprising a strip of cardboard or the like formed with a longitudinal score 2 intermediate of its edges. 'Ihus, an outer wall forming portion 3 and an inner portion 4 are formed and are integrally connected along the score line 2. The blank is composed of cardboard or other appropriate material having one side thereof sized or fmished and, on the sized or nished surface of the blank, I form ornamenting devices, or an ornamenting device, 5 extending from the lower edge of the part 3 across the score line 2 and across a considerable portion of the part 4 of the blank. The lower edge of the part 4 of the blank is formed with a longitudinal series of extended ngers or tongues 6 defined at the edge of the part 3 by a score line 1.

After the blank has been formed in this way, the oppositev or unsized side thereof is coated with cement or glue after which the blank is folded along the score 2 to superimpose the parts 3 and 4 one upon the other to bring the adhesively coated surfaces thereof together. Suflicient pressure is then applied to the folded blank to cause the parts 3 and 4 to attain strong adhesive attachment.

One end portion of the blank may be provided with a transverse score line 8 so that the finished wall will readily fold transversely, as indicated at 9 (Figs. 2 and 3). The ends of the wall thus obtained are then placed in overlapping relationship, which may be accomplished by telescoping the end of the wall opposite from the score line 8 between the portions 3 and 4 beyond said score line 8, as should be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3, and attaching the parts together.

When the blank is folded, longitudinally along the score line 2, the lower edge of the inner part 4 is approximately even or flush with the lower edge of the part 3 at the score line l. Then the ngers or tongues 6 are bent inwardly along the score line 1, extending across and against the lower edge of the part 4 (Fig. 8), and are seated upon the bottom wall I and attached thereto by 55 glue, cementl or other appropriate fastening means.

A similar wall structure of slightly greater length than the wall structure described, which is attached to the bottom wall I, is attached to the top wall Ill of the lid. The wall structure that is attached to the lid is of such size that it will telescope upon or around the wall that is attached to the bottom. After the side Wall is attached to the top wall of the lid, a combined lining and reinforcing member I I is tted in the telescoping wall of the lid and seated against the inner surface of the top wall I0 and upon the tongues or fingers 6 and adhesively attached to the said parts by glue or cement. The edge or edges of the member I iit against the inner wall portion 4, and thus the member I0 cooperates directly with all of the elements with which it is associated to maintain theparts in cooperative relationship and to strengthen the structure and, at the same time, provide a neat and finished appearance.

Obviously, the lower portion of the box or carton may be of the same construction as that of the lid; or the inside of the lower portion of the box or carton may be divided into a number of compartments. As shown in Fig. 2, the inside of the lower portion of the box or carton is divided into three compartments and, as shown in Fig. 4, the inside is divided into two compartmerits.

The device forming the wall or walls dividing the inside of the box or carton into a number of compartments Yis composed of a blank of cardboard or the like including a strip I 2 having a longitudinal score line I3 forming a fold line for the fingers or extensions I4. These fingers or extensions I4 may be bent laterally in either direction, or some of them may be bent laterally in one direction and others may be bent laterally 'in the opposite direction and seated upon and adhesively attached to the bottom wall I. An inside bottom member I5 is then fitted in the space between the wall I2 and the outer wall of the box or carton, and is seated upon the inwardly extended tongues or ngers 6 and any outwardly extended tongues or iingers I4 and upon the bottom wall I between said parts, and adhesively attached thereto by glue or cement or other appropriate fastening means. As shown in Fig. 4, an inner bottom member I6 is tted in the space formed by the wall I2 and seated upon the inwardly extended tongues or fingers I4 and adhesively attached thereto by glue or cement or other appropriate fastening means.

Theends of the wall I2 may be provided with notches II and I8 extending from opposite edges of said wall and forming interlocking portions I9 and 20, whereby the ends of the wall will be held together.

If desired, a wall 2I similar in all respects to the wall I2, and having laterally extended tongues or fingers 22 bent in either or both directions and seated upon the bottom wall I and adhesively attached thereto, may be provided to forman additional compartment. When the wall 2| is used, a wall member 23 is fitted in the space between the walls I2 and 2l and adhesively attached to the tongues or fingers I4 and 22; and a bottom Wall member 24 is fitted in the compartment formed vby the wall 2I and adhesively attached VtoV the tongues or fingers 22.

The folded Walls of the box or carton may be made of comparatively thin stock, so that the combined thickness thereof is approximately the same as the thickness of the usual outer walls of familiar types of boxes or cartons. The formation of. the ornamenting device or devices on the outer surfaces of the outer wall or walls of theY lower portion of the box and of the lid dispenses with many operations and with additional covering material now required to provide ornamental surfaces on these Walls and to cover the raw or cut edges thereof. inner wall I2 and, when desired, of any additional walls to divide the interior of the box or carton into as many compartments as required, is an inexpensive and practicable expedient to obtain different compartments to separate confections of different flavors, or other articles. Moreover, these walls permit the confections or other articles to be arranged in ornamental series and maintain them in that relationship irrespective of the position occupied by the box or carton when the lid is thereon.

It should now be apparent that boxes or cartons embodying the principles of this invention may be made in any shape and size desired, and that the shape shown in the drawing is for illustrative purposes only. The construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied in many other particulars without departure from the nature and principle of the invention.

1. In a box or carton having a bottom wall, an enclosing wall comprising inner and outer plies of cardboard or the like attached together approximately throughout their length, fingers or tongues integral with the lower edge of said outer ply extending inwardly across and against the lower edge of said inner ply and seated upon and attached to said bottom wall, means for attaching together the ends of the wall formed by said plies, and an inside bottom member seated upon and attached to said fingers or tongues and having its edge against the lower marginal portion of said inner ply.

2. In a box or carton having a bottom wall, an enclosing wall comprising a strip of material folded to form inner and outer plies, means attaching said plies together, and tongues or extensions integral with the lower edge of the outer ply extending inwardly across and against the lower edge of the inner ply and seated upon and attached to said bottom wall.

3. In a box or carbon having a bottom wall, an enclosing wall having inwardly extended portions integral with its lower edge seated upon and attached to said bottom wall, a partition wall within the enclosure formed by said enclosing wall having lateral extensions in connection with its lower edge seated upon and attached tov said bottom wall, and an inside bottom wall member fitted in the space between said enclosing wall and said partition wall and seated upon said extensions.

4. In a box or carton having a bottom wall, an

6. In a box or carton having a bottom wall, an outer wall rising from said bottom wall and forming an enclosure, parts in connection with the lower edge of said outer wall extending inwardly and seated upon and attached to said bottom wall, an inner wall rising from said bottom wall and forming an inner compartment and also cooperating with said outer wall to form another compartment, extensions in connection with the lower edge of said inner wall extending into both of said compartments, and inside bottom wall members tted in each of said compartments and seated upon said respective extensions.

7. In a box or carton having a bottom wall and an outer wall rising from said bottom wall and forming an enclosure, an inner wall rising from said bottom wall and cooperating with said outer wall to form separate compartments, tongues or extensions integral with the lower edge of said inner wall seated upon said bottom wall, and an inner bottom member engaging said outer wall and said tongues or extensions.

8. In a box or carton having a bottom wall and an outer wall rising from said bottom wall and forming an enclosure, an inner wall rising from said bottom wall and cooperating with said outer wall to form separate compartments, tongues or extensions integral with the lower edge of said inner wall seated upon said bottom wall, an inner bottom member engaging said outer wall and said tongues or extensions, and an additional inner bottom member in the compartment formed by 9. In a box or carton having a bottom wall, an enclosing wall having inwardly extended portions integral with its lower edge seated upon and attached to said bottom wall, a partition wall attached to the bottom wall within the enclosure formed by said enclosing wall and cooperating with said bottom wall to form a compartment and being spaced from said enclosing wall and cooperating with said bottom wall and said enclosing wall to form another compartment, and an inside bottom wall member fitted in the space between said enclosing wall and said partition wall and seated upon said inwardly extended portions and having its edges engaging said enclosing wall and said partition wall respectively.
