Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE ELSEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OE ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO ELISHA RISLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTAN DS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 210,192, dated November 26, 187B; application iiled September 23, 1878.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ELsEY, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State ofl Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands for School and other Desks, Tables, &c., the followingbeing a full, clear, and exact descrip tion ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, the same forming a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawing is a sectional side view of inkstand A, showing the flanges or wings B and cover C and cup D. Fig. 2 is a top view of inkstand A and cover C and cup D.
This invention relates to inkstands for school, oilice, or other desks, tables, &c.
It will be seen at once that my invention is practical, economical, and useful, also new; and consists of' an inkstand, A, provided with iianges or wings B, extending from the top downward on the outside at right angles from the center, and a part of' the same, said inkstand also to be provided with a cover, C, so arranged as to swing from right to left and from left to right, thus covering or uncovering the receptacle for ink or for the cup D.
Its advantages are as follows: The object of the iiangcs or Wings B 1s to more firmly hold the inkstand in place in the desk or table, and to prevent its turning out of position while swinging the cover, and also prevent its accidental removal while putting books, slates, &c., under or in the desk, as it will require a straight blow or lift upward to remove it, the flanges or wings having a bearing which prevents it from tilting or tipping sidewise, thus avoiding the spilling of ink and soiling of' clothing, books, &c., which often occurs when the common plain inkstand is used, as there is nothing tov prevent any kind of a blow from tilting or tipping them sidewise, and which my invention of ilanges or wings eft'ectuallyprevents.
These inkstands may be made of iron and coated with some non-corrosive substance or suitable material, or of any non-corrosive material,--metal, or cement, and made with or withoutahole, E, in the bottom, and. used with or without the .cup D. If the cup D is used, the inkstand having the hole in the bottom will be found very convenientfor removing the cup D by pushing it up from the bottom, instead of' soiling the fingers by putting them in the cup at the top to remove it, which is necessary to do when the old style of' inksta'nd is used to protect the bottle or cup. My invention as well affords a protection, with the hole in the bottom, against accidental removal from the various causes herein mentioned as it does without but if made ofsome non-corrosive material, with a bottom, the cup D can be dispensed with entirely. These inkstands will not require any other plan of fastening to the desks more than the security the flanges or wings adord, and can be easily pla-ced in the" holes used f'or other inkstands by making a receptacle for the flanges or wings, or by forcing or driving them in place. The flanges or wings, being tapering, will easily adjust themselves in position.
I do not limit myself to any particular number of iianges or wings, as any number may be used. Three, however, willbe most desirable, for this reason: Each one readily, when entered into its proper receptacle, adjusts the other two to their receptacles, thus securing a more equal and solid bea-ring to hold it in its place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is the following:
As a new article of' manufacture, the inkwell A, provided with the wings B and pivoted cover C, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto affix my name and seal in the presence of two witnesses this 10th day of September, A. D. 1878.
GEORGE EL'sEY., [L s] Witnesses:
. THos. H. DODGE, W. F. PoT'rEn.
