Description

Dec. 7; 1937. J. s. CHAPPLE NET CAP FOR PERSONAL WEAR Filed Aug. 6. 1936 wa /vial? ATTORNEY 1 l bathing cap.
Patented Dec. 7, 1931 UNITED. STATES NET CAP FOR PERSONAL WEAR Jean Stuart Chapplmhove, England, assignor of one-half to Beatrice Violet Chotzner, Hove,
England Application August 6, 1936, Serial No. 94,684
In Great Britain August 12, 1935 2 Claims.
This invention for a new or improved inner or under cap or head band for use with a bathing cap has for its object to prevent the ingress of water to the head beneath the-edge of a bathing 5 cap and consists of a band or pad of chamois leather or other suitable material preferably of a partly absorbent nature and means for securing and retaining the band or pad in position between the head of the wearer and the edge of the Inthe preferred way of securing the band or padon the head it is attached to the edge of a plain or net" cap, but it will beunderstood that theban'd may be kept in position on the head by any other suitable means.
In one way of carrying out the invention a fish-net cap as used by women for slumber caps" or a net cap of silk, hair, cord or other suitable material is made to fit the head closely and is.
edged or bordered with rubber or an elastic band.
The head band'or pad is conveniently formed of a' piece of chamois leather three inches wide which is folded double and sewn, stuck or otherwise attached to the border of the cap so as to form an absorbent pad around the same, one and a half inches wide. The chamois leather may be more or less than three inches in width and it may extend either entirely around the edge of the cap or so far only as to exclude that part of i go the cap which is in contact with the forehead of the wearer, to suit individual requirements.
It will be seen that the improved inner cap or head band will not only keep the hair dry but will also keep it in position under the bathing :5 cap.
One way of carrying out the invention will now be described with-reference to the accompanying drawing in which:--
' Fig. 1 is a pictorial vie of an inner cap accord- (0 ing to the invention. I
Fig. 2 is a section taken through the border and partly through the cap.
' As shown in the drawing the net cap Llilg. 1, which is shaped to fit the head of the wearer, is
bound with a silk or other braid 4 at the edge or around apart thereof folded to form a tubular element through which a piece ol' elastlc 2 is threaded in order that the cap may be drawn snugly around the nape of the neck and across the forehead of the wearer. A piece of chamois leather [is sewn over the edge and on to the cap to' form an absorbent pad. The chamois leather band so formed is long enough to extend from one side of thejface across the back of the neck,

to the other side of the face, the portion of the cap touching the forehead being finished by the binding 4. It will thus be seen that when the inner cap according to the invention is worn under the usual rubber bathing cap, water that may enter will be absorbed by the chmois leather and will not pass up into the hair, and the hair will be kept dry. Furthermore as the net cap fits the head of the wearer the hair will also be kept in position as long as it is worn and the net cap will retain the hair in place when the bathing cap is taken off. When an ordinary rubber cap' is pulled off the head, the hair is considerably disarranged, but with my construction, the net keeps the hair tidy and also holds the chamois leather pad} securely in the correct position for keeping out the wet when bathing.
I claim:
1. An inner cap for use in conjunction with a bathing cap to prevent the ingress of water between thebathing cap and the head and to hold the hair in place when the bathing cap is removed, comprising a net cap formed to fit the head of the wearer, a tubular binding of fabric extending entirely around the edge of the cap,
elastic means disposed within the tubular binding and adapted to draw the edge of the cap against the head, the tubular binding having suflicient fullness to permit the elastic means to expand and contract, and a pad of absorbent material extending over the inner and outer faces of the rear portion of the net cap and extending around on each side thereof whereby to provide an absorbent element at the nape of the neck between the head of the wearer and the margin of the bathing cap at the rear thereof.
2. An inner cap for use in conjunction with a bathing cap to prevent the ingress of water between the bathing cap and the'head and to hold and comprising a net cap formed to fit the head of the wearer, a tubular binding of fabric around the entire edge of the cap, an elastic band disposed within the tubular binding, the binding having suflicient fullness to permit the elastic band to contract and expand, and a pad of chamois skin disposed at the rear portion of the net cap and extending upward on the inside and outside of the net cap, the chamois skin extending around laterally on each side of the net cap'and extending upward toward the top of the net cap throughout its length.
