Description
A. GONRADT. Jewel-Gasket.
No. 210,012. Patented Nov. 19,1878.
NPEIERS, PHOTDJJTKGGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
t i i UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE AUGUSTUS CONRADT, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MIDDLETOWN PLATE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT l N JEWEL-GASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,012, dated November 19, 1878; application filed October 1 2, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS CONRADT, of Middletown, inthe county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ewel- 'Caskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, wherebyaperson skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My invention relates to caskets or boxes for the purpose of holdin g jewels or other articles; and it has for its object a novel, fanciful, and polnvenient method of opening and closing the My invention consists in the construction and mechanism that will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a side view of my improved casket, with a portion of the box or case removed, so as to show the operation of the interior parts. Fig. 2 is an end view of the casket from the rear.
A is the box or body of the casket. It is supported upon wheels at the rear end, and by a bracket at the forward end, as shown in the drawing, or by a suitable wheel or roller.
B B are the wheels which support the rear of the casket. They are connected by means of an axle, C, which turns with them and revolves in suitable bearings attached to the under side of the body A.
D is the lid or cover, turning upon a hinge at E, so that the forward end rises. G is a lever or bar extending within the box to the rear of the hinge and attached to the lid D. H is a cord, chain, or other flexible connection extending from the end of the lever G, and firmly attached to a pulley or roller, J, upon the axle C, the roller J being attached to the axle, so that it is turned by the movement of the wheels B. The cord H passes through a small opening in the bottom of the body A.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the casket is drawn forward, the friction of the'wheels turns the roller J and draws down the cord, which winds upon the roller and opens the lid. On pushing the casket 7 back to the first position the lid is closed.
The lid can also be opened and closed by hand,
if desired.
What I claim as my invention is- In combination with the lid D andits lever G, the flexible connection H and the roller J,
adapted to be operated by the wheels B, to automatically open and close the lid. by the rolling of the wheels, substantially as set
