To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, PETER BAUER, a citi- Zen of the Empire of Germany, residing in Oologne- Ehrenfeld, in the Kingdom of Prus- 5 sia and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar l)age-\Vagons, (for which Letters Patent were granted to me in Germany, No. 91,447, dated August 22, 1895; in Austria, No. 47/3,389, dated July 17, 1897; in Hungary, No. L 235, dated July 9, 1897; in France, No. 235,615, dated March 6, 1897; in Switzerland, Nos. 10,923 and 10,976, dated July 29, 1895, and in Belgium, No. 115,996, dated June 7, 1895,) x 5 of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved garbage-wagon in which the ashes and other garbage can be collected with little dust and annoyance and carried to the place of deposit without the unsightly appearance of the pres ent ash and garbage carts; and the invention consists of a garbage-wagon which comprises a covered Wagon-body having one or more openings in its sides, laterally projecting ledges at the lower partof said openings, swinging gates or shutters abutting against the inner edge of the ledges, and means by which they are guided at their upper ends, so they can be moved inwardly by pressure of the garbage-receptacle as it is emptied into the wagon and returned by gravity to its normal position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent in vertical transverse section 3 5 two forms of my improved garbage-Wagon, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same on a reduced scale.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of my improved garbage-wagon, which is preferably placed on four wheels, but which also may be made in the form of a cart. The Wagon-body A is closed by an arched roof B, by which the contents of the garbage-wagon are covered, so as to be concealed from view. The front of the wagon is closed and the rear wall is provided with hinged doors, so as to permit the removal of the garbage collected in the wagon. The side walls of the wagonbody are provided with one or more openings,

at the lower part of which are arranged i11- clined ledges b, which project laterally somewhat outside and inside the wagon-body, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and which serve as a rest for the receptacles to be emptied into the wagon and as an abutment for the swinging gates or shutters O, by Which the openings are closed. The lower part of the swinging gates or shutters O abut when in closed position against the inner edges of the ledges 19, their upper ends being pivoted to a rollercarriage O, which is guided on parallel rails 0 attached to the side walls of the wagonbody and supported from stationary hangers from the top of the same.

When the receptacle is to be emptied, it is placed on the ledge and tilted against the swinging gate or shutter, whereby the same is moved inwardly along the rails sufficiently to permit the contents of the receptacle to be readily discharged into the wagon-body. A transverse rod 61 is arranged along and above the inner edge of the ledge and serves as a support for the tilted garbage receptacle. Upon removing the garbage-receptacle the swinging gate or shutter is returned by gravity to its normal position, its lower end abutting against the inner edge of the ledge, as shown at the left of Fig. 1.

In place of the carriage or guide-roller, by which the upper end of the swinging gate 01' shutter is permitted to move inwardly under the pressure of the garbage-receptacle, the construction shown in Fig. 2 may be used, in which the gate or shutter G is provided with a keeper 6 at its upper part and with a guideroller supported on a bracket at the upper end. The keeper e is guided along a stationary keeper 6 which is supported on a longi- 9o tudinal bar a near the upper corners of the wagon-body, the keepers e being provided with an antifrictional roller along which the keeper 6 is guided when the swinging gate or shutter is moved inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. The guide-rollerfis secured to the upper end of the shutter and is guided along the keeper f, attached to inclined rails f which are attached to the side walls of the wagonbody and supported by a stationary hanger attached to the top thereof. Then the swinging gate or shutter is moved inwardly by the receptacle, it is moved in inward and upward direction, as shown on the right in Fig. 2, so that the garbage-receptacle can be discharged into the wagon-body. As soon as the garbage-receptacle is removed from the ledge the swinging gate or shutter returns by gravity into its normal closed position, and is moved in position by the guide-roller f and keepers f and .9. Sometimes it may be desired to retain the swinging gate or shutter in inwardly-raised position, so as to permit the dumping of a number of garbage-receptacles into the. wagon-body. For this purpose a chain is provided, which is attached to an eye to the swinging gate or shutter and passes over a pulley g at the lower end of the stationary arm attached to the top of the wagonbody, and from the same in downward direc-.

tion to the inclined openings in the side wall to the outside, where a suitable hook g is 'arranged. The chain .is released when it is desired to close the swinging gate or shutter, which then returns immediately to its normal position,against the inner edge of the ledge.

My improved garbage-wagon has the advantage that garbage or ashes can be collected in a very convenient manner with less escape of dust than heretofore and in such a manner as to avoid the unsightly appearance of ashcarts, inasmuch as the garbage or ashes collected is stored away and carried to the place of deposit in the closed wagon.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A garbage-wagon, comprising a body having a side opening, a laterally-projecting ledge at the lower part of the side opening, a swinging gate abutting against said ledge and displaceable at its upper end, and means for guiding said upper end inwardly in its movement, substantially as set forth.

2; A garbage-wagon, comprising a body having a side opening, a laterallyprojecting ledge at the lower part of the side opening, a swinging gate abutting against said ledge and displaceable at its upper end, means for guiding the said upper end inwardly in its movement, and a transverse rod arranged above said ledge, substantially as set forth.

3. A garbagewagon, comprising a body having a side opening, a swinging gate hinged adjacent to the upper part of said side opening and adapted to be opened automatically inward when the receptacle to be emptied is brought in contact therewith, and a transverse rod above the lower part of said opening, substantially as set forth.

4. A garbage-wagon comprising a covered body having an opening or openings inthe side walls, a ledge at the lower edge of each side opening, a swinging gate or shutter, abutting against the inner edge of said ledge, guide-rollers applied to the upper parts of the swinging gate or shutter, and rails for guiding said rollers and shutter when moved in inward direction, substantially as described.

5. A garbage-wagon, comprising a closed body, having an opening or openings in the side walls, a ledge at the lower part of each side opening, a swinging gate-or shutter for each opening, means for guiding the upper part of the swinging gate or shutter on inclined rails in inward direction, a chain connected at the ends of the swinging gate or shutter, and conducted over a stationary pulley to the outside of the body, and means for attaching said chain to the outside shutter, so as to support the swinging gate or sh utter in inwardraised position, substantially as set forth.
