To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Eennnr 0. DQAK, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at Canastota, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in GrainQar Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain car doors and has particular application to a combined swinging and sliding door.
In carrying out the present invention, it.
is my purpose to provide a grain cardoor 1 which will be connected to the car in such manner that the same may be swung outwardly under the weight of the grain so that the door may be relieved of such weight and then moved along the wall of the car out of the door opening, so that the grain or other material may be discharged from the car freely.
It is also my purpose to provide a grain car door which may be moved across thev door opening and then locked against the wall of the car to effectively closethe door opening so as to prevent leakage of the grain throu' h the opening after the grain or other material has been delivered to the. car.
Another object-of my invention is the provision of a car door wherein the upper portion of the door will be formed of relatively movable sections capable of swinging movement to open position, so that the grain, coal, or other material may be delivered to the car through the upper end of the door,
after the door has been looked as a unit at .fl
closed position, the upper sections of the door permitting the contents of the car to be inspected, whenever necessary or desired, without loss of any of the material in the car.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, andarrangement of parts here-. inafter set forth and falling within the scope of the claim. o

Referring now to the drawings in detail, A designates a car of suitable construction provided-with the usual doorway B. The
lintel of the doorway B is preferably reinforced by angle bars 1, while secured to the outer side of the wall of the car contiguous to the edges of the doorway and surrounding thelatter is a metal frame 0, having the inner edges of the side and end bars thereofformed with outwardly projecting flanges c. Fastened to the inner surface ofthe side Wall of; the car contiguous to the upper end of the door opening is one leg of an angle plate 2, and the other leg of the angle plate2' projects through the door openin immediately below the upper edge thereof, and fastened to the upper surface of the last mentioned leg of the angle plate is atrackbar 3, of'a length greater than the width of the door opening and projecting beyond the respective side edges of said opening. The outer edge of the track plate 3' is formed with a depending flange 4.
I In the present instance, the door of the car embodies a substantially rectangular frame E of a height and Width to close the door opening and adapted to fit between the anges 0 when the door is in closed osition. Mounted inthe frame E and suita ly fastened therein is a-bottom section 5 terminating short of the upper end of the frame, and

Fastened to the upper end bar at; the frame E adjacent I to the respective ends of such bar are elongated straps 9 arranged transversely of the top bar of the frame E. l010 designate hangers, each embodying a plate 11 having the upper end formed to provide bearings 11' in which are journaled the ends of an axle carrying a roller 13 bearing upon the track plate 3. The lower end of each plate 11 is formed to provide an upwardly extending flange 12 spaced apart from the plate and arranged upon the side of the frame 4 opposite from the plate so that the hanger will be held against outward movement on the track plate. The lower end of the plate of each hanger is also formed with depending bearings 12, in which are journaled the ends of a shaft 13 that extends through the strap 9, the strap being arranged between the bearings 12, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By means of the elongated straps 9, it will be seen that the door may be swung bodily away from the car so that the door may be relieved of the weight of the contents of the car, and after the door has been so relieved it may be moved longitudinally along the track plate 3 to uncover the door opening, thereby permitting the contents of the car to be freely discharged, the roller 13 and the hangers 10-10 sliding over the track plate 3 in the sliding of the door, and the flange 12 engaging the flange 4: to hold the hangers against outward movement on the track plate. Thus accidental removal of the door from the car is prevented.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the locking mechanism for the door embodies a king plate 14 preferably mounted upon a pin carried by the bottom section 5 of the door in the center of such section. Connected to the king plate 14 at diametrically opposite sides of the pivot pin 15 are the inner ends of links 16, and the outer ends of the links 16 terminate short of the respective side edges of the door. Secured to the lower section 5 of the door adjacent the respective corners thereof are lock casings 20, each having the outer wall formed with a slot 22 and slidably mounted within the respective lock casings 20 are bolts 19 adapted to be projected through the alining slots in the side bars of the frame E and in the flanges 0 when the door is in closed position. These bolts act to hold the door up against the side wall of the car so as to effectively close the door opening and pre vent leakage of the contents of the car through the door opening- Connected to the bolts 19 and projecting outwardly through the slots 22 are pins 20 respectively, and'connected to the.pins 20 upon each side of the door are the outer ends of vertical levers 17, the levers being fulcrumed between their ends within brackets 18 secured to the lower section of the door. The inner ends of the lever 17 upon each side of the door are pivotally connected to the adjacent end of the corresponding link 16. The king plate 14 is equipped with a sliding lever 14 and connected to the outer end of the king plate 14 is one end of a draw bar 24 slidably mounted in a bearing bracket 25 and having the other end thereof equipped with a handle 26 whereby the draw bar may be manipulated. The draw bar 24 is formed with an opening that alines with openings in the bearing bracket 25 when the draw bar is actuated to project the bolts 19, .and through these alining openings is passed a hand pin 27 to hold the belts in projecting position. By means of this construction, it {will be seen that when the door is moved across the door opening and disposed between the flanges c, the draw bar 24 may be actuated to swing the lever 14 and the plate 14, thereby transmitting a swinging movement to the lever 14 through the medium of the links 16 so that the locking bolts 19 will be projected through the slots or openings, thereby locking the door in closed position.
The section 6 of the door is equipped with bolt casings 32, respectively, adjacent to the side edges thereof, and slidably mounted within these casings are bolts 31 having their outer edges adapted to engage keepers 33 carried by the side bars of the frame E. The inner ends of the bolts 31 are connected with the outer extremities of links 30, respectively, and the inner extremities of the links 30 are pivotally connected to ears 29 formed on a lever 28 fulcrumed between its ends upon a pin 28 carried by the section 6 of the door. Thus it will be seen that when the lever 28 is swung in one direction motion will be transmitted through the links 30 to the bolts 31 to project the latter into the keepers 33 thereby locking the section 6 of the door in closed position. On the other hand, when the direction of movement of the lever 28 is reversed the bolts are withdrawn and the section 6 of the door may be swung into open position. In the present instance, the upper end of the lever 23 is equipped with an outwardly projecting keeper 34 adapted to'be engaged by one end of a bolt 35 slidably carried within a bracket 36 carried by the section 7 of the door. Thus, when the bolt 35 is engaged with the keeper 34, the lever 28 is locked against movement to hold the bolts 31 in engagement with the respective keepers, and as the bracket 36 is carried by the section 7 and lever.28 carried by'the' section 6, the section 7 of the door is held in closed position.
In order to check the outward swinging movement of the door when the latter is relieved of the influence of the bolts 19, I employ the following mechanism:
Connected to the outer wall of the car below the door and adjacent to the side edges of the latter is an arm 37 projecting out- .wardl from the car and having the outer end bifurcated as at 38, and pivoted within the bifurcated end of the arm 37 is a lever 39 having the upper end normally disposed in the path of movement of the door and the lower end connected with a spring 41 that acts upon the lever 39 to resist an outward movement of the door. -The upper end of the lever 39 is preferably beveled-outwardly as at 40. I claim The combination with a car having a door opening therein, ofa track plate arranged above the door opening and connected to the car, hangers carried by said track plate and capable of longitudinal'movement thereon, a door adapted to close said door opening, connections between said door and said hangers whereby the door may be swung outwardly from the wall of the car and subsequently moved along the track plate to completely uncover the door opening, and means for limiting the outward movement of the door, said means comprising a plurality of outwardly extending arms attached to said car below said door opening, a retaining member pivotally attached to each arm and having one end normally disposed in the path of movement of said door, and means for limitin an outward movement 5 member, said last menber. i
