COAL TUB.
No. 406,164. Patented July 2, 1889.
UNITED STATES AT'ENT' OFFICE.
GEORGE FOCHT, 0F HOBOKEN, NEV JERSEY.
COAL-TU B.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,164., dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed October 15, 1888. Serial No. 288,158. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FOOHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, Hudson county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvem ent in Coal-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates toimprovements in coaltubs, the body of which is made of three pieces, one piece forming the front, back, and bottom, and which is fastened to the sides, the back and bottom forming almost a half-circle with the front inclined out, and which is hung or suspended when off the ground by means of a handle or bail, which is attached on each side of the tub by means of a pin or pivot or other means, and is steadied when on the ground by means of wheels attached to the bottom, back, and front of said tub. To this handle or bail is riveted or fastened a catch or latch, into which a second handle or bail is fastened, said catch or latch having a slot or opening which engages alug fixed to the sides of the tub. At the end of the said catch is a roller, which enables the said latch to pass over the lug easily and prevents friction. This may or may not be used. The tub is allowed to dump a certain distance only by means of a stop or pin striking against the bail or handle, and which is fixed near the bottom of the tub on one or both sides.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents aside view of my invention, in which is shown the said catch or latch open and shut. (When open, it is shown by dotted lines.) Fig. 2 is a side view of the said coaltub, showing the same in an open position and in the position when dumping the contents thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same when closed. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of the catch or latch fastened as aforesaid to the bail of the tub.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a coal-tub, made of sheet metal of suitable thick ness, composed of three parts. A represents the back, bottom, and front A the side parts, to which are riveted or fastened parts A. The back of the tub is almost circular, being bulged at the bottom part, which causes it to Fastened to the ers B, set and fastened by suitable means Go into the body of the tub on each side of the front, at the bottom, and also with the lugs 19 at the bottom of the back part of the tub, and also the lugs 01 in the front part of the said tub, which support and to which are pivoted or fastened the wheels or rollers b and rollers n, respectively, which permit the tub to be easily and steadily moved when on the ground and when receiving or dumping a load. (Shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.)
The tub is provided on each side near the top, and also on the bottom on each side of the lugs b and rollers Z), with handles 0, by which the tub is moved and dumped and placed in any position required.
The tub A is suspended by the bail D, which is pivoted to the side walls A and to which bail is pivoted the catch or latch E on either or both sides of the tub, as shown in Fig. 3, the latch E working on a pivot on each side of the bail D or other fastening running through the said bail. The latch E is also provided with a slot or opening 6, as shown in Fig. 4., which engages and fits the lugs c when closed, the said lugs 6 being fastened to the sides A of the tub. Into or at the end of the latch E is pivoted or otherwise fastened a roller or wheel 6 which enables the latch E to more easily and readily pass over and onto the lu s e as shown in Fi s. 1 o
b 7 CI 9 and 4.
To the latch E, on both sides of the tub, is fastened the bail or circular arm F, at any required distance from the bail D, and which when pressed or pulled or otherwise brought 5 IOG contact with the bail D, and which also opens or lifts said latch E by being pressed, pulled, or brought toward the front of the tub A and away from the bail D. When the tub is dumped, it is prevented from tilting by a stop H, attached to both sides of the tub, as shown in Fig. 2.-
The latch E gives increased strength to the bail D, and may be used on one side of the tub or on both sides of the same, with or without the roller e I am aware that prior to my invention coaltubs have been made with latches operating in conjunction with lugs on the side of the tub. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and dc sire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A-coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the side walls of the sameflatches pivoted to the said bail on each side of the tub, each provided with a roller at its free end, which latches are connected by an arm or bail extending from the latch on one side to the latch on the other, and lugs attached to the side walls of the tub, substantially as described.
2. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the side walls of the same, a latch pivoted to the said bail on each side of the tub, an arm or bail extending from the latch on' one side to the latch on the other side of the tub, an arm extending from each of said latches downward, and a lug attached to each side of the tub, substantially as described.
3. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the side walls of the same, a latch pivoted to the said bail on each side of the tub, an arm or bail extending from the latch on one side to the latch on the other side of the tub, arms extending from the said latches downward, a
lug attached to eachside of the tub, and a fixed stop attached to the bottom part of the tub, substantially as described.
4. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the sides of the tub, a latch pivoted to said bail on each side of the tub, an arm orbail extending from the latch on one side to the latch on the other side, an arm extending downward from one of said latches, and a lug on each side of the tub, substantially as described.
5. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the sides of the tub, a latch pivoted to said bail on each side of the tub, an arm or bail extending from the latch on one side to the latch on the other side, and a lug on each side of the tub, substantially as described.
6. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the sides of the tub and a fixed lug on each side of the tub, alatch pivoted to said bail on each side of the tub, an arm or bail extending from the latch on one side to the latch on the other side, and an arm extending downward from one of said latches, substantially as described.
7. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the sides of the tub and a fixed lug on each side of the tub, a latch pivoted to said bail on each side of the tub, and an arm or bail extending from the latch on one side to the latchon the other side, substantially as described.
8. A coal-tub having a bail pivoted to the side walls of the same, a latch pivoted to the said bail on each side of the tub, an arm extending down from one of said latches, and a lug attached to each sideof the tub, substantially as described.
