UNITED srarns PATENT @FFICF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed August 9.1905- Serial No. 273,359-
To all whmn it Huey concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HovAs, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EndrGates for Dumping-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved endate for vehicles, especially dumping-vehicles, provided with a body designed to be tilted to discharge the load, said gate being so arranged and constructed that it may be readily opened by the attendant when the vehicle-body is in the tilted position and being provided with means whereby the gate when opened will always remain open to its full extent until the entire load has been discharged and it is desired that it shall again be closed when the vehicle-body has been returned to its normal horizontal position, thereby avoiding the defects which a freely-closing end-gate would occasion, owing to its weight being always exerted against the discharging load, tending to choke the discharge-opening and prevent a free delivery.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dumping-vehicle embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a modification residing in the location of the end-gate with respect to the vehicle-body. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end-gate in open position and with its imlatching-lever shown detached. Fig. 4 is a detail or fragmentary view in section.
The body 1 of the dumping-vehicle is designed to tilt to discharge its load and is preferably constructed throughout of sheetmetal. It is entirely and permanently closed, except feed-openings controlled by doors 2 and a dischargeopening in its rear, cont-rolled by an end-gate 3. This end-gate is hinged at its upper edge and is provided on its outer face with an eccentrically-pivoted latch-bar 4, designed to rock, so that its ends will engage with hooks 5 at the rear of the sides of the body 1. One of said hooks is downwardly-facing, while the other faces upwardly. In order to rock the latch-bar out of engagement with the hooks 5, I have provided an unlatching-lever 6, which is fulcrumed on a stud 7, projecting from one of the rear end rests on the ground.
hooks 5, preferably the runvardly-facing hook. The said lever lies against the side of the hook with its weight so disposed that it normally will be in contact with the lower side of the adjacent protruding end of the latch-bar. The said bar is limited in its swinging movement by stop-pins 8 on the end-gate. In order to maintain the endgate when opened :in a wide-open position, it is provided at one or both of its sides with an upwardly-breaking rule-joint strut 9.
It will be observed that in Fig. 1 the endgate is located below the meeting flanges 10, that secure together the upper section or top 1 of the vehicle-body and the lower or bottom section 1 thereof, while in Fig. 2 the end-gate forms a part of said upper section. The object of showing these two different constructions is that Fig. 1 'llustrates a dumping-vehicle as it would appear if constructed outright with my invention in View, while Fig. 2 illustrates how my invention may be applied to an already-constructed open-top sheet-metal dumping-vehicle of the kind now commonly employed. In the latter instance the invention practically constitutes part of a cover for the vehicle.
WVhen it is desired to empty the dumpingvehicle, the body is first tilted so that its Then the attendant by simply pressing hisfoot against the unlatching-lever can disengage the latchbar from its fastenings, the end-gate will swing open, and the strut 9 straighten out to maintain it in wide-open position until the entire load has been discharged. The attendant may then return the body lito its normal horizontal position and readily close the end-gate. As the attendants hands may be engaged in holding the body in tilted position until the end-gate is opened, it is manifest that the construction and arrangement herein described whereby he may open the end-gate readily with his foot is advantageous.
I claim as my invention 1. In a vehicle of the class described, a body provided at the rear of its stationary side members with oppositely-facing hooks, an end-gate hinged at its upper edge to said body, a latch-bar pivotally mounted on said end-gate with its ends designed to engage said hooks, and an unlatching-lever fulcrumed on the body adjacent one of said ends and designed to contact therewith whereby to rock said latch-bar out of engagement IIO With said hooks, as and for the purpose set hooks,
forth.
and an unlatching-lever fulcrumed on said pin or stud and designed tocontact With 2. In a vehicle of the class described, a an end of said bar, as and for the purpose set tilting body provided at the rear of its sta- 5 tionary side members with oppositely-facing hooks, one of said hooks having an outwardly-projecting pin or stud, an end-gate hinged at its upper edge to said body intermediate the Vertical planes of said hooks, a 10 latch-bar pivotally mounted on said endgate With its ends designed to engage said forth.
, In testimony whereof I have signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
