Description

A.`GONRADT; Jewel-Gasket.
No. 208,373, I Patented Sept. 241,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AUGUSTUS CONRADT, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MIDDLETOWN PLATE COMPANY, OF SAME FLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JEWEL-GASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,373, dated September 24, 1878; application filed July 17, 1878.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS CONRADT, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewel-Cas kets 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanydng drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
'My improvement relates to jewel-caskets, or to other articles of manufacture and it has for its object a novel method ofopening the drawer by a swinging motion of the bail or handle to the box without there being any front handle to the drawer, where it is usually placed.
My invention consists in the mechanical devices by which this is accomplished.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a frontview of my improved jewel-casket. Fig. 2 is a section through the middle from front to rear, showing the parts beyond.
A is the body of the casket. B is the drawer. (Shown partially drawn out in Fig. 2.) C is the handle, turning upon fixed centers D attached to the body of the casket. E is a continuation of the handle, which passes under the casket in a loop, as shown in the drawing, although it can be detached in the middle, if desired, the horizontal part of which passes through the forked projections G upon the bottom of the drawer, so that when the top of the handle C is pushed to the rear, as is partially done in Fig. 2, the drawer is drawn out or pushed forward. H is a wheel or roller attached to the front edge of the drawer, which rolls upon the top of the table or other` article In the drawing, the side levers E, which open and close the drawer, are shown outside of the box or casket; but they may be placed within the outside shell, so as to be concealed, if de sired. Other modifications of my invention will readily suggest themselves-such as a single handle being used upon one side only of the box or casket instead of the bail-handle shown in the drawings.
My invention is operated by simply pushing the handle back to open the drawer, and by drawing it forward again when it is desired to close it.
My invention is also applicable to butterdishes, pickle-stands, and other articles, one part of which can be made to move upon the other by the same mechanism. Either the upper or lower part of the article can be made movable and the other stationary.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination of the lever E with the handle C and the drawer B, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The wheel H, in combination with the drawer B, lever E, and handle C substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
AUGUSTUS CONRADT.
