HO RACEQROSO QE BURT, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
DEVICE FOR COVERING AND PROTECTiNG CONTENTS OF DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming ,part of Letters Patent N 0. 589,159, dated August 31,1897. 7 ,ippumioh fil d. March 19, 1897. Serial No. 628,277. (remand To aZZ whom it may concern: 1 7
Be it known that I, HORACE Rosoon BURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Device for Covering and Protecting the Contents of Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved device designed to cover and protect the contents'of drawers, this result being attained through a then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view illustrating the application of my device. Fig. 2 is aview in elevation of the roller upon which the cover is wound. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Figs. at and 5 represent, respectively, aplan view and a side elevation of the bearing for the roller. Fig. (Sis a plan and elevation of therack for operating the roller. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the key for locking the parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a table or desk to which is movably secured in the usual manner a drawer B.
0 represents a roller having" journals 1, adapted to be mounted in bearings 2, secured to the table A,directly above the drawer. The roller is positioned at the front end of the table or desk and is provided on each end with a toothed wheel 0, by means of which motion is imparted to the roller on openin g or closing the drawer, as hereinafter described.
Secured on the upper edge of each side wall of the drawer is a metal rack I), having suitable perforations 3,adapted to engage the teeth on wheels c, by which construction motion is imparted to the roller 0 by movement of the drawer.
D represents a. cover made of flexible material, one end being secured to the inner side of the rear wall of the drawer, its other end being secured to the roller 0, and the loose portion of the cover being wound. upon the roller, as shown in Fig. 1.
Assuming the drawer to be fully opened, in
the roller and which position the cover will be wound upon the roller 0; exposing the contents of the drawer, then when the drawerispushed in ward to close it the racks b engage the teeth on wheels 0, revolving the roller and permitting the cover to unwind from the roller and assume a position above the drawer until when the drawer has been fully closed the cover will be unwound from the roller and covered over the top of the drawer, thus protecting its contents. The reverse movement of the drawer will cause the roller 0 to revolve in the oppositedirection, winding the cover upon exposing the contents of the drawer.
The bearings 2 and the toothed wheels 0 are each provided witha small square opening i, which when in register with each other are adapted to receive a small key E, by which the roller is locked and the drawer rendered immovable. 1
Through placing the racks b on the upper edge-of each side wall of the drawer, and their register with the teeth on wheels 0, it will be evident that the movement of the drawer will be maintained perfectly straight, thus preventing the binding of the drawer when being opened or closed.
It will be seen that the cover when the drawer is closed closely fits. the top of the drawer, thus protecting the contents of the drawer from dust or dirt, and that the operation of the coveris automatic, requiring but the simple opening or closing of the drawer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a drawer, of a roller journaled in bearings secured to a fixed support, a flexible cover secured atone end to the inner end of the drawer and at the otherend to the roller, and means for automatically operating the roller to wind and unwind the cover on pulling out and pushing in the drawer.
p 2. The combination ,with a drawer provided with one or more gear-racks, of a roller carrying one or more gear-wheels adapted to mesh with said rack or racks, said roller being journaled in bearings secured to a fixed support, and a flexible coversecured at one end too to theinner end of the drawer and at the other I port, a flexible cover secured at one end to end to the roller, substantially as described the inner end of the drawer and at the other 10 and for the purposes stated. end to the roller, and means for locking the 3.
