UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE GOUGH, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO ELIZUR G. WEBSTER AND ADELBERT WEBSTER, BOTH OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
JEWEL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,473, dated February '7, 1882.
Application filed November 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE GOUGH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cover Attachment for J ewelry-Oases and other Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cover attachment for jewelry-cases, butter-dishes, sugar boxes, bonbonnieres, and other like articles, whereby the cover can be raised by pushing backward the bailhandle of the case or box.
p The invention consists in a bail pivoted to the box or casing and resting against or embracing studsprojecting from the sides of the lid or cover, which is hinged to the box or casin g. button or projection to prevent the lid or cover from being opened too far.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a jewelrycase provided with my improved cover attachment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal elevation of a modification of the same.
.The lid or cover A is hinged to the box or casing B in some suitable manner, as shown, and. is provided with two lateral studs or pins, 0, one on each side, which studs or pins 0 pass into or through the longitudinal slots D of a curved bail, E, which is pivoted to the casing or box B. If the bail E is swung backward'-that is, in the direction of the arrow athe studs or pins 0 must move with it, and as the cover or lid A is hinged on the box or casing B this cover will turn on its hinge and will swing open, as indicated by the arrow 1). To close the cover or lid the bail E is moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a. To prevent the cover from being swung open too far, and for the purpose of holding it open, the bail E is provided with check knobs or buttons F, against which the studs 0 rest when the lid is open.
It is not necessary that the bail E be slotted The bail is provided with a check.
(Modeh) cover A will be opened by swinging the bail E in the direction of the. arrow 0.. If the cover is to be closed, the bail is simply swung in the inverse direction of the arrow at and the cover drops of its own weight.
This cover attachment can be applied to jewelry-cases, sugar and candy boxes, butterdishes, and other like articles. It can be made of metal, porcelain, glass, &c.,-or partly of one material and partly of another.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a box and its hinged lid or cover, of a bail pivoted to the box, and of studs or pins projecting from the sides of the hinged lid or cover, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the box B and the I hinged lid A, of the longitudinally-slotted bail E, pivoted to the box B, and of the studs or pins 0, projecting from the lid A through the slots of the bail E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a box and its hinged lid or cover, of a bail pivoted to the box, of lateral studsor pins on the lid or cover,
and of a checking device on the bail, against which checking device the pins are to strike to prevent the cover from being opened too far, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the box B and its hinged lid or cover A, of the bail E, pivoted to the box, the studs 0 on the lid A, and the check button or knob F on the bail E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
