COLLAPSIBLE AND EXTENSIBLE SAFETY-GATE FOR STREET AND OTHER CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, MILTON L. ROHRER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible and Extensible Safety-Gates for Street and other Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in collapsible and extensible gates which are pivoted or hinged by means of drop-hinges to the outer surfaces of the end walls of street or other cars, said gates being adapted to close and open the sides of the end platforms of said cars.
The object of the invention is the production of such gates, being simple in construction, easily manipulated, and adapted to effectively close the sides of said platforms,
providing a means of safety to passengers standing thereon while the cars are in motion and to open them again when the cars are not in motion for the ready ingress or egress of passengers to and from said cars.
The elements of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be particularly set forth or pointed out in the appendedclaim or claims.
The purposes of the invention are attained by the mechanism, devices, and means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, with similar reference characters to designate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the gates shown in the position of closing one side of the end platform of a car. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same gate in opened position. Fig. 3 is a direct side elevation of the front end portion of said gate, showing its elements in extended or opened position. Fig. 4 is a similar View of the same portion of the gate, showing the elements thereof in partially folded or opened position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged front elevation of the portion comprehended between the points y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same portion. Fig. 7 is a top View of the same portion. Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken on the line w :10 in Fig. 5; and Fig. 9 is a longitudinal view of the left end portion of the upper shaft, the left-hand bearing-block appearing in section.
It will here be remarked that the gates referred to in the opening paragraph hereto are arranged in pairs, one pair being at each end of the car to close and open the sides of the platforms adjacent to the steps thereof; but the body of the car; the end platform, to gether with the end railing of the dash and the steps leading to the platform, are of such well-known construction that they are not illustrated in the drawings, and it is deemed sufficient to consider only one of said gates that is, the ri ht-hand one. r
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, A designates a portion of one of the end walls of a car, to the outer surface of which the gates of the inven tion are applied.
The gate B is composed of an upper bar B and a lower bar B which bars have their rear ends I) and b rigidly secured in any approved manner to the adjacent ends of revoluble shafts B journaled, respectively, in bearingblocks B and B The bearing-blocks B are provided at their rear ends with projecting lips 6 which are fitted in slots or openings between ears 6 and pivoted thereto by pins or bolts I). Said ears project forwardly from base blocks or plates B, which plates are placed against the outer surface of said portion A and rigidly secured thereto by woodscrews or bolts 5 passing through said plates and tapped into said portion A. These parts constitute the drop-hinge of the invention, which drop-hinge is adapted to lower the rear end I) of the upper bar B, facilitating the folding of the gate when its members are passing to the folded or opened position indicated in Fig. 2. The bearing-blocks B are made integral with the forward ends of lugs 6 projecting forwardly from base blocks or plates B, which plates are also placed against the outer surface of said portion A and rigidly secured thereto by wood-screws or bolts b passing through said plates and tapped into said portion A. The shafts B where they are journaled in their respective bearingblocks B and B are provided with peripheral grooves b to be engaged by the ends of screws 6, holding the rear ends I) and b of the bars B and B against their respective bearing-blocks B and B when the gates are either in extended or collapsed position or while passing from one position to the other. Said bars B and B have arranged on their adjacent surfaces pairs of lugs or ears I), between which lugs or ears are pivoted the ends of slats B by means of screws or bolts 1), and said slats are provided with oppositely-disposed edge projections 12 to engage against the surfaces of the bars B and B for the purpose of bracing them when the gates are in closed position, (best shown in Fig. 3,) and said projections pass between said lugs or ears b when the gates are opened. (Best shown in Fig. 2.) The forward end slat B has at its upper end edge instead of the projection 12 a forwardly-projecting loop or and-grip I). (See Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
Adjacent to the lower edge of the baseblock B, which lies next to the point where the rear end I) of the bar B is rigidly secured to the adjacent end of its revoluble shaft B is arranged a practically L-shaped spring-bar B", with its rear end portion placed against said portion A and rigidly secured in place by Wood screws 6 The other portion thereof, being yielding and forwardly extending, is adapted to engage against the edge of i said bar B and is provided with a notch or offset b to engage the edge of said bar B when the gate occupies the upwardly-folded position, holding it securely open, as is shown in Fig. 2.
The invention having thus been ascertained and described and the manner in which its functions are performed fully shown and set forth, what is considered new,
and desired to be secured by Letters Patent,
1. A safety collapsible and extensible gate for closing the sides of the end platforms of street or other cars, said gate having upper and lower bars having their rear ends hinged to the outer surface of the end walls of said car, with a drop-hinge provided for lowering the adjacent sur the rear end of the upper bar when said gate is folded upward,- substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. A safety collapsible and extensible gate for closing the sides of the end platforms of street or other cars, said gate having u per and lower bars; airs of lugs projecting f iom faces of said bars; and vertical slats having their ends pivoted between said pairs of lugs and oppositely-disposed edge projections at their pivoted ends, substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
3. A safety collapsible and extensible gate for closing the sides of the end platforms of street or other cars, said gate having upper and lower bars with vertical slats pivoted at their ends to the opposedsurfaces of said bars a drop-hinge provided to lower the rear end of said upper bar, said drop-hinge comprising a revoluble shaft to which the rear end of said upper bar is secured; bearing-blocks journaling the ends of said revoluble shaft, said bearing-blocks'pivoted to the forward ends of lugs projecting from base-plates rigidly secured to the outer surface of the end walls of said car, and means provided for holding the folded gate in open position, all substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
