SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,792. dated danuary 3, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS P. BAILEY, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of hinges adapted for use upon frames or parts of furniture that fold over one upon another, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my device attached to a folding frame in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the full lines showing the position of the parts when one of the frames is folded over upon the other, the dotted lines indicating the position of the parts when one of the frames has been thrown up at right angles to the other preparatory to being folded completely over. Fig. 3 is an edgewise view of the hinge itself, a part of the link being broken away, showing the pivot and guide-pins.
The hinge is composed of two plates, 12 p, which are severally fastened to the framesf, in tended to be hinged together, as shown in Fig.1. These plates have pivot-pins 1 and gnidepins 2 formed upon their faces, the pivot-pin being a little longer than the guidepiu in order to allow it to beheaded down to unite the link I to the plates, as shown in the upper part of Fig. 3. Thelink Z is provided with slots s,which are concentric with the pivot pins 1, and the guide pins 2 fit into and traverse these curved slots, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the slots being of such length as to allow one part of the frame to be folded over above the other, as shown in Fig. 2. lhe frames,w hen in this position, are held a short distance apart by the link Z, so as to give room for the upholsterers material, which is intended practically to close up the opening between the frames when finished.
\Vhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the guide-pins 2 strike against the ends of the curved slots 8 nearest each other. When they are in the position shown in Fig. 2, they strike the ends of such slots at their opposite ends; in either case forming stops to prevent the further movement of the parts in such direction.
I am aware that hinges formed of end pieces connected by a link are not new, and do not broadly claim the same as my invention; but in hinges of this class heretofore known the slots have been formed in the end plates and the pins attached to the inside of the link, projecting inwardly and through the plates and striking against and abrading the wood-work of the frame, thereby not only abrading and wearing away the wood, but when the plates are screwed too tight the movement of the hinge is cramped, the pivots being confined against the face of the wood, thus making the hinge more difficultof operation. I remedythis difficulty by constructing my hinge upon an entirely different plan. The pivot and guide pins are formed on the outer face of the end plates, the latter being flush with the outer face of the link when in use, and the pivotpins are headed down upon the outside of the link, and thus the tightening of the screws that fasten the plates 1) p to the frame has no effect whatever upon the movement of the hinge.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
A hinge composed of the end pieces, 12 p, having pivot pins 1 and guide-pins 2, the link I, having slots s concentric with the pivots 1, by which the link is fastened to the plates of the hinge, the guide-pins 2 traversing the slots formed in the link, all combined substantially as described.
